Steve Clinkscale (born September 21, 1977) is an American football coach who is currently the defensive backs coach for the Los Angeles Chargers. He was previously the defensive backs coach for the University of Michigan and the University of Kentucky.
Clinkscale was born in 1977. He grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, and attended Chaney High School. He attended Ashland University where he played football and was the team captain. He graduated in 2000 with a degree in sports science. [1]
Clinkscale began his coaching career as the defensive backs coach at Ashland from 2001 to 2007. He then held the same position at Western Carolina in 2008. From 2009 to 2011, he was the cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator at Toledo. He next coached defensive backs at Cincinnati from 2013 [2] [3] to 2015. In January 2015, he was elevated to the defensive coordinator position at Cincinnati. [4]
Clinkscale was hired in March 2016 as the defensive backs coach for the University of Kentucky Wildcats football team. [5] He held that position from 2016 to 2020. Kentucky's defensive backs under Clinkscale led the SEC in passing defense in 2019 and 2020. [1]
Clinkscale was hired in May 2021 as Michigan's defensive backs coach. [6] [7] He was hired at an initial annual salary of $600,000. [8] He also became co-defensive coordinator in 2022. He helped lead the Wolverines to a national championship in 2023. [1]
On February 14, 2024, Clinkscale was named as the defensive backs coach for the Los Angeles Chargers. [9]
Sidney Gillman was an American football player, coach and executive. Gillman's insistence on stretching the football field by throwing deep downfield passes, instead of short passes to running backs or wide receivers at the sides of the line of scrimmage, was instrumental in making football into the modern game that it is today. He was inducted as a coach into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983, and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989.
Gary Oscar Moeller was an American football coach best known for being head coach at the University of Michigan from 1990 to 1994. During his five seasons at Michigan, he won 44 games, lost 13 and tied 3 for a winning percentage of .758. In Big Ten Conference play, his teams won 30 games, lost 8, and tied 2 for a winning percentage of .775, and won or shared conference titles in 1990, 1991 and 1992. He left Michigan in 1995 following a drunken incident. Moeller also coached in professional football and was the head coach of the Detroit Lions for part of the 2000 season. He was the father of former Cleveland Browns offensive line coach Andy Moeller.
A coaching tree is similar to a family tree except it shows the relationships of coaches instead of family members. There are several ways to define a relationship between two coaches. The most common way to make the distinction is if a coach worked as an assistant on a particular head coach's staff for at least a season then that coach can be counted as being a branch on the head coach's coaching tree. Coaching trees can also show philosophical influence from one head coach to an assistant.

His career includes having served as the assistant head coach and linebackers coach for the Los Angeles Rams, as well as serving as the defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, and Green Bay Packers. Barry also previously served as an assistant coach for the San Diego Chargers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the San Francisco 49ers. Barry is the son of former coach Mike Barry.

Brown played his entire pro football career with the Houston Oilers from 1983 to 1990. He played college football at Oregon.
Steven Bernard Wilks is an American football coach and former player. He last served as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. He served as the head coach for the Arizona Cardinals in 2018. He has also served as defensive backs coach for the Chicago Bears and San Diego Chargers, as well as the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns and Missouri. He played college football at Appalachian State.

The 1983 Michigan Wolverines football team was an American football team that represented the University of Michigan in the 1983 Big Ten Conference football season. In their 15th season under head coach Bo Schembechler, the Wolverines compiled a 9–3 record, lost to Auburn in the 1984 Sugar Bowl, and outscored all opponents by a total of 355 to 160.
Scott Gregory Hazelton is an American football coach who is currently a special assistant to the head coach at the University of Texas at Austin. He was previously the defensive coordinator at Michigan State University. Hazelton was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Kansas State University in 2019 before moving to Michigan State.
