The Stone School is a school building located at 2600 Packard Road in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. [1] Beginning in 1955, the building houses the Stone School Cooperative Nursery. [2]
In 1852, Dr. Benajah Ticknor leased this plot of land to the newly formed Pittsfield School District Number 2, for use as a school site. By 1853, the district parents had gathered fieldstones and constructed a small Greek Revival schoolhouse. In the following years, the surrounding area grew, so that by 1881 the school was serving Fractional District Number 7. By 1911, the district had outgrown its schoolhouse, so the parents demolished the old school and constructed this new one, using the old stones as well as new ones gathered for the purpose. The school gained recognition from the state Superintendent of Public Instruction Fred L. Keeler, who designated it a model "Standard School" in his 1914-1914 report. [3]
The following year, the landowner, Aaron Sommers, sold the land the school is placed on to the Pittsfield Schools for $30. The district continued to grow, and a frame classroom was added to the lot. In 1949, a new concrete block school was built across the street, and in 1953 the stone school was renovated. The Ann Arbor Public Schools acquired the school in 1955, and a group of local parents formed the Stone School Cooperative Nursery, opening in the schoolhouse. [3] In 1995, this group purchased the building from the school district. [2]
Stone School is a single-story one-room schoolhouse located on a triangular plot of land, now fenced to protect the playground. It has fieldstone walls and a cross-gabled red tile roof. Larger fieldstones form a ground-level beltcourse, corner quoins, and shallow arches above the doors and windows. The main portion of the building holds the classroom, and contains broad, square-head window on each narrow side. A front-gable entry projects forward, ad contains a wooden door with a transom above, flanked by long, narrow, double-hung, one-over-one window units. The entry is reached via wide stone steps. There is a concrete block addition in the rear. [3]
On the interior, the entry leads to a hall with an office on one side and an open coat area on the other. The coat area also contains an enclosed stair to the basement. The remainder of the interior is one large room with a high ceiling, plaster walls, and bead board wainscot. [3]
Chana School is a Registered Historic Place in Ogle County, Illinois, in the county seat of Oregon, Illinois. One of six Oregon sites listed on the Register, the school is an oddly shaped, two-room schoolhouse which has been moved from its original location. Chana School joined the Register in 2005 as an education museum.
The Clay Office and Conference Center is a renovated office complex formerly known as the Clay School. It is located at 453 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in Midtown Detroit, Michigan. It is the oldest school building in the city of Detroit. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1982.
The Reid School is a historic school building in Bend, Oregon, United States. Built in 1914, it was the first modern school building constructed in Bend. The school was named in honor of Ruth Reid, Bend's first school principal. The building remained part of the public school district until 1979, when ownership was transferred to Deschutes County for use as a local history museum. Today, the Reid School is the home of the Deschutes Historical Museum. Because of its unique architecture and importance to the history of Bend, the Reid School is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Old Bend High School is a historic school building in Bend, Oregon, in the United States. Opened in 1925, the building served as a public high school for 31 years and a junior high school for an additional 22 years before being transitioned in 1979 into its current role as the administrative headquarters for the Bend-La Pine School District.
The former District 10 School is located just north of state highways 28 and 30 south of Margaretville, New York, United States. It is a stone one-room schoolhouse built, demolished and rebuilt in the middle of the 19th century.

The Eggleston School is former school and current private residential structure located at the 10539 Nolan Road in rural Nester Township in southeastern Roscommon County, Michigan. It was designated as a Michigan Historic Site on February 29, 1996 and soon after added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 4, 1996. The school is particularly notable for the finely crafted fieldstone exterior, constructed of blocks with various shapes, sizes, and hues. It is the only property in Roscommon County listed on the National Register and one of only four county properties designated as a Michigan Historic Site — along with Gerrish Township Information Site, Pioneer House, and Turney House.
The Greenfield School in West Allis, Wisconsin was built as a two-room school in 1887, but in an elegant Romanesque Revival style unusual for such buildings. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
Strang School District No. 36, or the Strang Public School, is a historic school located in Fillmore County, Nebraska, in the village of Strang. The school is one of the two sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the village of Strang. The school building is a small, two-story, brick public schoolhouse, which was built to replace the schoolhouse that was previously located on that site. The schoolhouse was built between 1929 and 1930, and replaced the previous schoolhouse, which burned down in 1928. The schoolhouse still retains all original building materials. The school served high school students from 1930 to 1951, and still functions as a school today, serving grades K–8. The NRHP listing also includes a flagpole located outside the schoolhouse, and five pieces of playground equipment.
The District No. 1 Schoolhouse is a historic one-room schoolhouse on Somerset Road in Somerset, Vermont. Built about 1850, it is the only known entirely unaltered district schoolhouse in the state, and is probably the only surviving municipal building from the tiny community, which was disincorporated in 1937. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
The Brock Hill Schoolhouse is a historic one-room schoolhouse on North Road in rural Newbury, Vermont. Built in 1850, it is a well-preserved example of a mid-19th century schoolhouse with Greek Revival styling. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
The District No. 5 School is an historic school building and local history museum at 311 East Road in Petersham, Massachusetts. It is one of two relatively unmodified one-room schoolhouses in the town that were built in 1849. It is presently managed by the local historical society as a local history museum. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
Starkweather School is an educational building located at 550 North Holbrook Street in Plymouth, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. It is the only school from its time still extant in Plymouth, and the only school in Plymouth designed by Malcomson and Higginbotham, who designed numerous schools for the Detroit school district.
The Alpine Elementary School is a compound consisting of four buildings in Alpine, Arizona, operated by the public Alpine Elementary School District on the Navajo Nation. It serves grades K-8. The original school building of this complex was built in 1930, but a government-funded school had operated here since 1882. The current gym/auditorium was constructed in 1939 for use as a chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which had members in the community.

The Parents' and Children's Schoolhouse, located at 1505 Crane Court in Midland, Michigan, was constructed for use as a nursery school. It has since been adapted as a single-family home. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
A two-room schoolhouse is a larger version of the one-room schoolhouse, with many of the same characteristics, providing the facility for primary and secondary education in a small community or rural area. While providing the same function as a contemporary primary school or secondary school building, a small multi-room school house is more similar to a one-room schoolhouse, both being architecturally very simple structures. While once very common in rural areas of many countries, one and two-room schools have largely been replaced although some are still operating. Having a second classroom allowed for two teachers to operate at the school, serving a larger number of schoolchildren and/or more grade levels. Architecturally, they could be slightly more complex, but were still usually very simple. In some areas, a two-room school indicated the village or town was wealthier and more prosperous.
