Philippe originated from the interaction of a tropical wave and the Central American Gyre. A tropical wave moved off the coast of West Africa on October 16, and traversed westward across the tropical Atlantic. [1] On October 22, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) began to note the possibility of tropical cyclogenesis over the southwestern Caribbean Sea. [2] The disturbance reached the southwestern Caribbean by October 24, where it interacted with the Central American Gyre, developing a broad area of low pressure the following day just offshore Nicaragua. Convective activity associated with the low began to increase, as it began to drift gradually west-northwestward. On October 27, connective associated with the system became more concentrated as it moved near the northeastern coast of Honduras. At this time, Hurricane hunters reconnaissance aircraft found winds of around 35 mph (56 km/h) in the disturbance. However, the storm lacked a well-defined center, and thus it was not upgraded to tropical depression status. [1] Late that day, the NHC designated the disturbance as Potential Tropical Cyclone Eighteen, while it was located roughly 415 miles (668 km) south-southwest of Havana, Cuba. [3] Although, at 12:00 UTC the next day, satellite imagery and reconnaissance aircraft data displayed a well-defined center, prompting the upgraded of Eighteen to a tropical depression, about 100 miles (160 km) south-southwest of Isla de la Juventud. [1]

Around this time, vertical wind shear affecting the system became more favorable for intensification. [4] The depression also shifted towards the northeast due to a mid-latitude trough that moved into the Southeastern United States and western Gulf of Mexico. By 18:00 UTC that same day, the depression strengthened into Tropical Storm Philippe while just southeast of Isla de la Juventud. Its tropical storm status was shorted-lived, however, as it made landfall on the southern coast of the Zapata Peninsula, Cuba at 22:00 UTC. This combined with strong southwesterly wind shear caused Phillipe to quickly weaken to a tropical depression by 00:00 UTC on October 29 before dissipating shortly thereafter. It remnants moved quickly northeastward ahead of the trough and spawned a new non-tropical low-pressure area just hours after it dissipated. The low moved over South Florida and the central and northwestern Bahamas before being absorbed into a cold front at 12:00 UTC. [1]

Preparations and impact

Central America and Cayman Islands

Potential Tropical Cyclone Eighteen, and its precursor which paralleled the coast of Central America, brought heavy rainfall to Nicaragua and Honduras. [5] Due to these rains, the entire country of Nicaragua was placed under a yellow alert on October 24. [6] This was later upgraded into a red alert by October 27 for portions of the country. [7] The intense rainfall caused by the system in Nicaragua overflowed rivers, which damaged bridges and streets. Thousands of people had to be evacuated to safety as a result of floods. Widespread power outages were reported across several departments. More than 2,317 residences were inundated by floodwaters, with 30 destroyed. Over 17,450 were left without access to drinking water. A total of five fatalities occurred due to the floods in Nicaragua; four artisan miners who drowned after the well they worked in flooded, and a 15-year-old child who fell into a ravine. [8]

In the Cayman Islands, Philippe prompted a Tropical Storm Warning for the territory. [9]

Cuba and The Bahamas

Heavy rain fell across Cuba and The Bahamas in relation to the storm. In the Bahamas, a wind gust of 51 mph (82 km/h) was recorded at Settlement Point, with sustained winds reaching 35 mph (56 km/h). [10]

Ahead of Philippe, a Tropical Storm Watch was put in effect from Craig Key to Golden Beach in South Florida, at 15:00 UTC on October 28. [11] The watch was later discontinued early the next day, as Philippe was no longer deemed a threat to the region. [12] Residents in the path of the storm were advised to prepare for heavy rainfall. [13] Initially, Philippe was thought to have made landfall in Florida, although it was later revealed in the post-season analysis that the storm had already dissipated, with its track being confused with a nearby area of low pressure. Had Philippe actually made landfall in the state, it would have been the first November tropical cyclone to do so since Hurricane Mitch in 1998. [1] [14]

Heavy rainfall and flash flooding was reported in parts of South Florida, prompting Flood Watches for Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties. [15] A peak precipitation accumulation of 10.93 inches (278 mm) was reported in Aberdeen. [16] Philippe also brought gusty winds to the area, with a peak wind gust of 47 mph (76 km/h) being recorded at the Dania Beach Pier on October 29. [17] Minor tree damage was reported across the Miami metropolitan area due to tropical storm-force gusts. [18] A total of three tornadoes were reported in Florida due to the storm. [19] An EF0 tornado was reported in Westwood Lakes, which affected a shopping center and neighborhood. Tree limbs fell onto cars at the Bird Bowl Shopping Center, damaging a windshield. The shopping center also lost electricity during the tornado. The front window of a CosmoProf Salon Supply shop was shattered, with the roof of the store being torn off. The roof of a nearby bowling alley was also damaged, letting water pour into meeting and mechanical rooms, and shifting a dumpster behind the building. The bowling alley was forced to close for a day, to allow employees to cleanup damage. The tornado also damaged the Westchester neighborhood, downing trees, utility lines, and fences. Minor damage to roofs and siding was also reported. Florida Power & Light rushed to restore electricity to the shopping center and neighborhood, following the tornado. [20] [21]

A second EF0 tornado occurred in Boynton Beach that caused minor roof damage at several residences and broke a streetlight. Two vacant mobile homes were also damaged by the storm, one had its roof blown off and tossed hundreds of yards away, while the other had blown out windows. [22] [23] A third EF0 tornado occurred in Lake Clarke Shores, that damaged power and cable lines, fences, and downed trees. A wind gust of 75 mph (121 km/h) was reported on the Forest Hill Community High School campus as the tornado moved into West Palm Beach, with a nearby street sign being blown down. [24] Heavy rains from the storm overwhelmed a water treatment plant that served the cities of Palm Beach and West Palm Beach, spilling 1.2 million gallons (4.5 million liters) of sewage water into a retention basin. [25] Fortunately, no casualties or monetary damages were reported in Florida. [19]

The remnants of Tropical Storm Philippe merged with a mid-latitude system, developing a low pressure system, which forced the coldfront that Philippe had also been absorbed into through New England, along with moisture from Philippe. In Connecticut, heavy downpours caused a stream to overflow its banks, shutting down a road in Bristol. Portions of Connecticut received up to 6 inches (150 mm) of precipitation from the storm system. [26] High winds also affected the state, toppling numerous trees in Danielson. [27] Strong winds in Newtown downed utility lines and caused a tree to fall onto a house, severely damaging a garage. Public schools in the town were closed due to weather conditions. [28] A tree collapsed onto a residence in Wethersfield, fortunately causing no casualties. Total damage in Connecticut reached $21,000 (2017 USD). [29]

Hurricane Michelle was the fifth costliest tropical cyclone in Cuban history and the strongest hurricane of the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season. The thirteenth named storm and seventh hurricane that year, Michelle developed from a tropical wave that had traversed into the western Caribbean Sea on October 29; the wave had initially moved off the coast of Africa 13 days prior. In its early developmental stages, the depression meandered over Nicaragua, later paralleling the Mosquito Coast before intensifying into tropical storm intensity on November 1; Michelle was upgraded to hurricane strength the following day. Shortly after, rapid intensification ensued within favorable conditions, with the storm's central barometric pressure dropping 51 mbar in 29 hours. After a slight fluctuation in strength, Michelle reached its peak intensity as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 mph (230 km/h) and a minimum pressure of 933 mbar. This tied Michelle with 1999's Lenny as the fourth most powerful November hurricane on record in the Atlantic Basin, behind only the 1932 Cuba hurricane and 2020 Hurricanes Iota and Eta. At roughly the same time, the hurricane began to accelerate northeastward; this brought the intense hurricane to a Cuban landfall within the Bay of Pigs later that day. Crossing over the island, Michelle was weakened significantly, and was only a Category 1 hurricane upon reentry into the Atlantic Ocean. The hurricane later transitioned into an extratropical cyclone over The Bahamas on November 5, before being absorbed by a cold front the following day.

The 1961 Atlantic hurricane season was a very active Atlantic hurricane season, with an accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) total of 189, the highest since 1950 and until being surpassed by 1995. The season, however, was an average one in terms of named storms. The season featured eight hurricanes and a well above average number of five major hurricanes. It was previously thought that the season had a record-tying seven major hurricanes, before the Atlantic hurricane reanalysis project downgraded two storms in 2019. Two Category 5 hurricanes were seen in 1961, making it one of only eight Atlantic hurricane seasons to feature multiple Category 5 hurricanes in one season. The season started on June 15, and ended on November 15. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. The first system, an operationally unclassified tropical depression, formed offshore east Central Florida on June 10, but dissipated a few days later. Next, Hurricane Anna developed in the eastern Caribbean Sea near the Windward Islands on July 20. It brought minor damage to the islands in, as well as wind and flood impacts to Central America after striking Belize as a hurricane. Anna caused one death and about $300,000 (1961 USD) in damage. Activity went dormant for nearly a month and a half, until Hurricane Betsy developed on September 2. Betsy peaked as a Category 4 hurricane, but remained at sea and caused no impact.

The 1964 Atlantic hurricane season featured the highest number of U.S.-landfalling hurricanes since 1933. The season officially began on June 15, and lasted until November 30. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. The season was above average, with thirteen named storms, seven hurricanes, and five major hurricanes. The first system, an unnamed tropical storm, developed on June 2, almost two weeks before the official start of the season. Striking Florida on June 6, the storm brought localized flooding to portions of Cuba and the Southeastern United States, leaving about $1 million in damage. The next storm, also unnamed, developed near the end of July; it did not impact land.

The 1966 Atlantic hurricane season saw the Weather Bureau office in Miami, Florida, be designated as the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and assume responsibility of tropical cyclone forecasting in the basin. The season officially began on June 1, and lasted until November 30. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. It was an above-average season in terms of tropical storms, with a total of 15. The first system, Hurricane Alma, developed over eastern Nicaragua on June 4 and became a rare major hurricane in the month of June. Alma brought severe flooding to Honduras and later to Cuba, but caused relatively minor impact in the Southeastern United States. Alma resulted in 90 deaths and about $210 million (1966 USD) in damage.

The 1968 Atlantic hurricane season was a below average hurricane season during which only nine nameable storms developed. The season officially began on June 1 and lasted until November 30, dates which conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. Of the named storms, five strengthened into hurricanes; none however intensified into a major hurricane. Only four other seasons since the start of the satellite era—1972, 1986, 1994, and 2013—did not feature a major hurricane. The first system, Hurricane Abby, developed in the northwestern Caribbean on June 1. Abby moved northward and struck Cuba, bringing heavy rainfall and flooding to western portions of the island. Making landfall in Florida on June 4, Abby caused flooding and spawned four tornadoes, but left behind little damage. Overall, the hurricane resulted in six deaths and about $450,000 (1968 USD) in damage. In late June, Tropical Storm Candy brought minor flooding and spawned several tornadoes across portions of the Southern United States. Overall damage from the cyclone reached approximately $2.7 million. 1968 featured two simultaneously active tropical storms during the month of June, a phenomenon that would not occur again until 2023.

However, the first tropical cyclone developed on June 13, while the final system was absorbed by a cold front on December 1. There were 10 tropical storms; 5 of them attained hurricane status, while two became major hurricanes, which are Category 3 or higher on the modern day Saffir–Simpson scale. Operationally, the third tropical storm was considered two separate tropical cyclones, resulting in the storm receiving two names. The eighth tropical storm went undetected and was not listed in HURDAT until 2014.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1945 Atlantic hurricane season</span>

The 1945 Atlantic hurricane season produced multiple landfalling tropical cyclones. It officially began on June 16 and lasted until October 31, dates delimiting the period when a majority of storms were perceived to form in the Atlantic Ocean. A total of 11 systems were documented, including a late-season cyclone retroactively added a decade later. Five of the eleven systems intensified into hurricanes, and two further attained their peaks as major hurricanes. Activity began with the formation of a tropical storm in the Caribbean on June 20, which then made landfalls in Florida and North Carolina at hurricane intensity, causing one death and at least $75,000 in damage. In late August, a Category 3 hurricane on the modern-day Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale struck the Texas coastline, with 3 deaths and $20.1 million in damage. The most powerful hurricane of the season, reaching Category 4 intensity, wrought severe damage throughout the Bahamas and East Coast of the United States, namely Florida, in mid-September; 26 people were killed and damage reached $60 million. A hurricane moved ashore the coastline of Belize in early October, causing one death, while the final cyclone of the year resulted in 5 deaths and $2 million in damage across Cuba and the Bahamas two weeks later. Overall, 36 people were killed and damage reached at least $82.85 million.

Hurricane Isbell was the final hurricane to affect the United States during the 1964 season. The eleventh tropical storm and sixth hurricane of the season, Isbell developed from a dissipating cold front in the southwestern Caribbean on October 8. The depression initially remained disorganized as it track northwestward, but strengthened into Tropical Storm Isbell on October 13. Re-curving northeastward, Isbell quickly strengthened further and reached hurricane status by later that day. Late on October 13, Isbell made landfall in the Pinar del Río Province of Cuba. The storm continued strengthening and peaked as a Category 3 hurricane on the following day. Isbell moved northeastward and made landfall near Everglades, Florida, late on October 14. After reaching the Atlantic on the following day, the storm began to weaken. Isbell turned northward and continued weakening, before transitioning to an extratropical cyclone while located just offshore eastern North Carolina on October 16.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2008 Atlantic hurricane season</span>

The 2008 Atlantic hurricane season was the most destructive Atlantic hurricane season since 2005, causing over 1,000 deaths and nearly $50 billion in damage. The season ranked as the third costliest ever at the time, but has since fallen to ninth costliest. It was an above-average season, featuring sixteen named storms, eight of which became hurricanes, and five which further became major hurricanes. It officially started on June 1 and ended on November 30. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. However, the formation of Tropical Storm Arthur caused the season to start one day early. It was the only year on record in which a major hurricane existed in every month from July through November in the North Atlantic. Bertha became the longest-lived July tropical cyclone on record for the basin, the first of several long-lived systems during 2008.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hurricane Dennis (1981)</span> Category 1 Atlantic hurricane in 1981

Hurricane Dennis caused severe flooding in Miami-Dade County, Florida, in August 1981. The tenth tropical cyclone and fourth named storm of the season, Dennis developed from a tropical wave well south of Cabo Verde on August 7. The depression intensified into a tropical storm early the next day. Dennis then encountered strong wind shear, causing the storm to weaken to a tropical depression on August 11. After crossing the Windward Islands on August 12, Dennis degenerated into a tropical wave several hours later over the Caribbean Sea. The wave became a tropical depression again late on August 15 while approaching Cuba. Dennis reintensified into a tropical storm before landfall in Matanzas Province. The cyclone emerged into the Straits of Florida on August 16, before striking the Florida Keys and then mainland Monroe County early the next day. It drifted across Florida, reaching the Atlantic near Cape Canaveral on August 19. Dennis continued to intensify and made landfall near Emerald Isle, North Carolina, but moved east-northeastward and soon tracked offshore. Late on August 20, Dennis deepened into a hurricane with winds of 80 mph (130 km/h), before weakening to a tropical storm over colder waters on August 21. Dennis became extratropical northeast of Bermuda early on August 22 and persisted until being absorbed by a frontal system on August 26.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hurricane Rina</span> Category 3 Atlantic hurricane in 2011

Hurricane Rina was a small and slow-moving, but powerful tropical cyclone that caused minor impacts in the northwestern Caribbean Sea in late October 2011. The seventeenth named storm, seventh and final hurricane, and fourth and final major hurricane of the annual hurricane season, Rina developed from a tropical wave in the western Caribbean on October 23. The depression quickly intensified, and was upgraded to Tropical Storm Rina early on the following day. Further strengthening ensued as it tracked west-northwestward, with Rina becoming a hurricane on October 24. The hurricane eventually peaked as a Category 3 hurricane while it moved generally westward on October 25. However, on October 26, Rina weakened substantially and was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane. Further weakening occurred, with Rina falling to tropical storm intensity on October 27. Rina then made landfall in northern Quintana Roo early the next day. The cyclone degenerated into a remnant low later on October 28 after emerging into the Yucatán Channel. The low dissipated near the western tip of Cuba on October 29.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2016 Atlantic hurricane season</span>

The 2016 Atlantic hurricane season was the first above-average hurricane season since 2012, producing 15 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes. The season officially started on June 1 and ended on November 30, though the first storm, Hurricane Alex which formed in the Northeastern Atlantic, developed on January 12, being the first hurricane to develop in January since 1938. The final storm, Otto, crossed into the Eastern Pacific on November 25, a few days before the official end. Following Alex, Tropical Storm Bonnie brought flooding to South Carolina and portions of North Carolina. Tropical Storm Colin in early June brought minor flooding and wind damage to parts of the Southeastern United States, especially Florida. Hurricane Earl left 94 fatalities in the Dominican Republic and Mexico, 81 of which occurred in the latter. In early September, Hurricane Hermine, the first hurricane to make landfall in Florida since Hurricane Wilma in 2005, brought extensive coastal flooding damage especially to the Forgotten and Nature coasts of Florida. Hermine was responsible for five fatalities and about $550 million (2016 USD) in damage.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2017 Atlantic hurricane season</span>

The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season was a devastating and extremely active Atlantic hurricane season that became the costliest on record, with a damage total of at least $294.92 billion (USD). The season featured 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and 6 major hurricanes. Most of the season's damage was due to hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Another notable hurricane, Nate, was the worst natural disaster in Costa Rican history. These four storm names were retired following the season due to the number of deaths and amount of damage they caused. Collectively, the tropical cyclones were responsible for at least 3,364 deaths. The season also had the highest accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) since 2005 with an approximate index of 224 units, with a record three hurricanes each generating an ACE of over 40: Irma, Jose, and Maria. This season featured two Category 5 hurricanes, and the only season other than 2007 with two hurricanes making landfall at that intensity. The season's ten hurricanes occurred one after the other, the greatest number of consecutive hurricanes in the satellite era, and tied for the highest number of consecutive hurricanes ever observed in the Atlantic basin.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2019 Atlantic hurricane season</span>

The 2019 Atlantic hurricane season was the fourth consecutive above-average and damaging season dating back to 2016. The season featured eighteen named storms, however, many storms were weak and short-lived, especially towards the end of the season. Six of those named storms achieved hurricane status, while three intensified into major hurricanes. Two storms became Category 5 hurricanes, marking the fourth consecutive season with at least one Category 5 hurricane, and the third consecutive season to feature at least one storm making landfall at Category 5 intensity. It was also the seventh season on record to have multiple tropical cyclones reaching Category 5 strength, which would not occur again until 2024. The season officially began on June 1 and ended on November 30. These dates historically describe the period each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin and are adopted by convention. However, tropical cyclogenesis is possible at any time of the year, as demonstrated by the formation of Subtropical Storm Andrea on May 20, making this the fifth consecutive year in which a tropical or subtropical cyclone developed outside of the official season.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2020 Atlantic hurricane season</span>

The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active Atlantic hurricane season on record, in terms of number of systems. It featured a total of 31 tropical or subtropical cyclones, with all but one cyclone becoming a named storm. Of the 30 named storms, 14 developed into hurricanes, and a record-tying seven further intensified into major hurricanes. It was the second and final season to use the Greek letter storm naming system, the first being 2005, the previous record. Of the 30 named storms, 11 of them made landfall in the contiguous United States, breaking the record of nine set in 1916. During the season, 27 tropical storms established a new record for earliest formation date by storm number. This season also featured a record ten tropical cyclones that underwent rapid intensification, tying it with 1995, as well as tying the record for most Category 4 hurricanes in a singular season in the Atlantic Basin. This unprecedented activity was fueled by a La Niña that developed in the summer months of 2020, continuing a stretch of above-average seasonal activity that began in 2016. Despite the record-high activity, this was the first season since 2015 in which no Category 5 hurricanes formed.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2021 Atlantic hurricane season</span>

The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season was the third-most active Atlantic hurricane season on record in terms of number of tropical cyclones, although many of them were weak and short-lived. With 21 named storms forming, it became the second season in a row and third overall in which the designated 21-name list of storm names was exhausted. Seven of those storms strengthened into a hurricane, four of which reached major hurricane intensity, which is slightly above-average. The season officially began on June 1 and ended on November 30. These dates historically describe the period in each year when most Atlantic tropical cyclones form. However, subtropical or tropical cyclogenesis is possible at any time of the year, as demonstrated by the development of Tropical Storm Ana on May 22, making this the seventh consecutive year in which a storm developed outside of the official season.

The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season was a destructive and deadly Atlantic hurricane season. Despite having an average number of named storms and below average amount of major hurricanes, it became the fourth-costliest Atlantic hurricane season on record, behind only 2017, 2024, and 2005, mostly due to Hurricane Ian. The season officially began on June 1, and ended on November 30. These dates, adopted by convention, historically describe the period in each year when most subtropical or tropical cyclogenesis occurs in the Atlantic Ocean. This year's first Atlantic named storm, Tropical Storm Alex, developed five days after the start of the season, making this the first season since 2014 not to have a pre-season named storm.
