Typhoon Damrey,known in the Philippines as Typhoon Labuyo,was a typhoon that hit Vietnam and China in September 2005. The typhoon was the most powerful storm to affect Hainan in over 30 years, [1] killing more than 113 people. [2]
Due to its proximity to the Philippines, PAGASA assigned it the name Labuyo and began issuing advisories to the east of the islands on September 19. The Japan Meteorological Agency gave warnings on the same day. On September 20, the storm was classified as a tropical depression 17W by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). On September 21, the JTWC upgraded it to a tropical storm and assigned it the name Damrey (Khmer: ដំរី; lit.: elephant). Damrey strengthened into a typhoon on September 24.[ citation needed ]
Damrey made landfall at Wanning, China's Hainan province, at 20:00 UTC on September 25 (04:00 on September 26, local time). It had maximum sustained winds up to 180 km/h. This made Damrey the strongest typhoon to strike Hainan since Typhoon Marge in September 1973. At least 16 people are believed to have died in China, [1] and the entire province of Hainan suffered power outages. Damrey went on to impact Vietnam before losing tropical characteristics. The JTWC ceased advisories on September 27, with the final one taking place at 09:00 UTC, once the system was 90 nautical miles (170 km) south-southwest of Hanoi, Vietnam.[ citation needed ]
In the Philippines, officials in the province of Ilocos Norte evacuated nearly 20,000 residents from flood-prone regions to schools being used as temporary shelters. [3] In fourteen of the country's provinces, storm signal one, the lowest on a scale of four, was issued by meteorologists. [4]

Throughout southeastern Asia, Typhoon Damrey was considered one of the worst typhoons in history. Many places sustained damage not seen in several decades. In Hainan Island, the entire province was without power at one point, a highly unusual event. Additionally, Typhoon Damrey became the strongest storm to make landfall on the island since Typhoon Della in 1974. [5] In Vietnam, Damrey was referred to as the worst typhoon to strike the country in nine years. [6]
As a tropical storm, Damrey produced significant rainfall across portions of the Philippines. [7] The highest rainfall total was recorded in Daet, Camarines Norte at 159 mm (6.3 in). [5] Widespread flash flooding triggered by these rains led to substantial agricultural and property damage. In the agricultural department alone, officials estimated that the storm wrought over 1 billion Philippine pesos (USD 21.4 million) in losses. Over 9,000 hectares (22,239 acres) of rice and corn fields were flooded in Isabela Province alone. [3] Throughout the country, 16 people were killed as a result of flooding, [5] several of whom were children from Isabela Province. Landslides along the major roadway between the provinces of Ilocos Norte and Cagayan were impassable, due to landslides and downed trees. [3] Farther west, 35 villages were flooded in the provinces of Camarines Sur and Albay. [4]
There were 29 deaths in China. [8]
Throughout Vietnam, 69 people were killed as a result of the typhoon. [9] Torrential rains from the storm [6] amounted up to 144.1 mm (5.67 in) in some areas, [5] inundating 300,000 hectares (741,316 acres) of farmland and roughly 100,000 homes. Damage from the storm was estimated at nearly 3.3 trillion Vietnamese dongs (USD 208.9 million). The most severe damage took place in northern Yen Bai province, where 51 people were either killed or missing. [6] Roughly 120 km (75 mi) of dykes built to protect farmland from flooding were destroyed by the typhoon. More than 10,400 homes and schools were destroyed by floodwaters, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless. [7]
After moving through Vietnam, the former typhoon brought heavy rainfall to parts of Laos which triggered widespread flash flooding. Throughout the country, 55 people were killed as a result of the storm. [7] In northern Thailand, the remnants of Damrey produced widespread flooding that killed ten people and left three others missing. The most severe damage took place in Lampang province, where seven people were killed and one other was missing. Nearly 2,000 people were evacuated due to flooding which caused damage to an estimated 32,000 homes. In addition to the thousands of damaged homes, 40 roads, 24 bridges, and a reservoir were also damaged. Elsewhere in Thailand, three people were killed as a result of Damrey. [10]
Shortly after the storm passed by the Philippines, officials quickly began search-and-rescue operations in the hardest-hit regions. Personnel from the 501st Brigade of the Philippine Coast Guard led the rescue efforts in Ilocos Norte. Food, water, and supplies were being delivered to evacuation centers to care for evacuees and victims. [3] In the wake of the storm, the governor of Aurora Province requested government assistance for residents in central areas of the province. By September 21, the Philippine Navy deployed rescue personnel to the area. Additionally, the National Disaster Coordinating Council and the Department of Social Welfare and Development provided medical supplies and relief items to the affected areas. [11]
The 2005 Pacific typhoon season was the least active typhoon season since 2000, producing 23 named storms, of which 13 became typhoons. It was an event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation, in which tropical cyclones form in the western Pacific Ocean. The season ran throughout 2005, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. The season's first named storm, Kulap, developed on January 13, while the season's last named storm, Bolaven, dissipated on November 20. The season's first typhoon, Haitang, reached typhoon status on July 13, and became the first super typhoon of the year three days later.
This timeline documents all of the events of the 2005 Pacific typhoon season, the period that tropical cyclones formed in the Western Pacific Ocean during the year. The scope of this article is limited to the Pacific Ocean, north of the equator between 100°E and the International Date Line. Tropical depressions that form in the basin were given a number with a "W" suffix by the United States' Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). If a depression intensified into a tropical storm, it would be assigned a name by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). In addition, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) assigned names to tropical cyclones which were in their area of responsibility.
Typhoon Imbudo, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Harurot, was a powerful typhoon that struck the Philippines and southern China in July 2003. The seventh named storm and fourth typhoon of the season, Imbudo formed on July 15 to the east of the Philippines. The storm moved generally west-northward for much of its duration due to a ridge to the north. Favorable conditions allowed Imbudo to intensify, gradually at first before undergoing rapid deepening on July 19. After reaching typhoon status, Imbudo strengthened further to peak 10–minute sustained winds of 165 km/h (103 mph) on July 20. The typhoon made landfall on northern Luzon near peak intensity on July 22, but quickly weakened over land. Once in the South China Sea, Imbudo re-intensified slightly before making its final landfall in southern China near Yangjiang on July 24, dissipating the next day.
Typhoon Zeb, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Iliang, was a powerful typhoon that struck the island of Luzon in October 1998. It is tied with Cyclone Ron and Cyclone Susan in terms of minimum pressure, for the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide for 1998. The tenth tropical storm of the season, Zeb formed on October 10 from the monsoon trough near the Caroline Islands. It moved westward initially and quickly intensified. Zeb's inflow briefly spawned another tropical storm, which it ultimately absorbed. Developing an eye, Zeb rapidly intensified into a super typhoon, officially reaching maximum sustained winds of 205 km/h (125 mph); one warning agency estimated winds as high as 285 km/h (180 mph). After reaching peak intensity, the typhoon struck northern Luzon and quickly weakened over land. Turning to the north, Zeb brushed the east coast of Taiwan at a reduced intensity, and after accelerating to the northeast it moved through Japan. It became extratropical on October 18 and moved eastward over open waters.
Severe Tropical Storm Halong, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Cosme, was the fourth severe tropical storm named by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which is the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre for the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center also recognized Halong as the fifth tropical depression, the fourth tropical storm, as well as the third typhoon of the 2008 Pacific typhoon season.
Typhoon Chan-hom, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Emong, was the sixth tropical depression and the second tropical storm to develop during the 2009 Pacific typhoon season. Chan-hom developed out of an area of convectional cloudiness associated with an area of disturbed weather which originated from the remnants of Tropical Depression Crising and formed southeast of Nha Trang, Vietnam on May 2. Moving towards the northeast, it slowly organized according to JTWC who issued a TCFA, and JMA classified Chan-hom as a minor tropical depression later that day. The next day, both JTWC and JMA upgraded the depression to a tropical storm and named it Chan-hom. On May 6, the storm intensified into a Category 1 typhoon, and on May 7, Chan-hom intensified into a Category 2 typhoon equivalent. However, Chan-hom weakened into a severe tropical storm after passing northern Luzon. On May 14, Chan-hom regenerated into a Tropical Depression, before dissipating late on May 15.
Tropical Storm Soudelor, known in the Philippines as Tropical Depression Gorio, was a weak tropical cyclone that lead to deadly flooding in the Philippines, China and Vietnam in July 2009. Forming out of an area of low pressure on July 9, Soudelor failed to maintain deep convection around its center for the duration of its existence. On July 10, the depression brushed the northern Philippines and intensified into a tropical storm on July 11. Later that day, the storm crossed the Leizhou Peninsula. The last public advisory from the JMA was issued the following day after Soudelor made landfall in southern China.
Typhoon Mirinae, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Santi, was the 34th depression and the 14th typhoon in the 2009 Pacific typhoon season. It came several weeks after Typhoons Ketsana and Parma devastated the Philippines, thus adding additional damage wrought by the two preceding typhoons.
Typhoon Conson, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Basyang, was the second tropical cyclone during the 2010 Pacific typhoon season to impact the Philippines. Developing out of a tropical disturbance east of the Philippines on July 11, 2010, Conson quickly developed as it tracked nearly due west. Favorable environmental conditions, such as low wind shear and warm sea surface temperatures, allowed the system to intensify into a severe tropical storm by July 12. Around the same time, the JTWC assessed the storm to have been equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane. The following day, Conson struck Quezon Province with winds of 100 km/h (60 mph) before weakening. After crossing the archipelago, the storm entered the South China Sea where it was able to re-strengthen. By July 16, Conson attained typhoon status as it neared the southern Chinese island of Hainan. After brushing the island at peak intensity with sustained winds estimated at 130 km/h (80 mph), the storm weakened in the Gulf of Tonkin due to less favorable conditions. The storm eventually made landfall near Hanoi, Vietnam on July 17 and dissipated the following day.
Typhoon Megi, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Juan, was the strongest tropical cyclone of 2010 and is considered one of the most intense ever recorded. Megi, which means catfish in Korean, was the only super typhoon in 2010. Early on October 18, Megi made its first landfall over Luzon. By passing Luzon, Megi weakened but gradually regained strength in the South China Sea, before weakening and losing its eye in the Taiwan Strait. Megi made its second landfall over Zhangpu in Fujian, China on October 23.
Severe Tropical Storm Nock-ten, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Juaning, was a strong tropical storm which made a total of four landfalls in Southeast Asia, killing more than 100 people and causing damage estimated at US$126 million. It was the eighth named storm and the fourth severe tropical storm of the 2011 Pacific typhoon season.
Typhoon Chebi, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Queenie, was a powerful typhoon that impacted Luzon during November 2006. Chebi is the third typhoon since Typhoon Xangsane to hit the country destructively. The 30th tropical depression developed east of the Mariana Islands on October 31 as a weak disturbance. The system was dubbed into a tropical depression on November 8, until both the JMA and PAGASA upgraded it to a tropical storm on November 9. Chebi rapidly intensified to a Category 4 typhoon the next day and made landfall over northern Philippines on November 11. The system finally dissipated near Hong Kong and Vietnam on November 14.
Typhoon Kalmaegi, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Luis, was the 22nd depression and the 15th named storm of the 2014 typhoon season. Kalmaegi was the first storm to make landfall over the Philippines since Typhoon Rammasun, two months prior. The storm caused flooding in Southeast Asia during mid-September. Kalmaegi started as a disturbance near Palau that could become a tropical cyclone in the next few days. JTWC would designate it to Tropical Depression 15W. PAGASA also named the system Luis as the 11th named storm inside PAR. Environmental conditions became more conducive for intensification, which allowed 15W to intensify into a tropical storm and attained the name Kalmaegi. On September 13, the storm intensified into a Category-1 typhoon as it moved through open warm waters. Around 17:00 PHT on September 14, the eye of Kalmaegi made landfall in the coastal town of Divilacan, Isabela, bringing gusty winds and heavy rains in the area.
Severe Tropical Storm Nida, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Carina, was a tropical cyclone that struck Luzon, Philippines and Guangdong, China in late July and early August respectively. The fourth named storm of the annual typhoon season, Nida formed on July 28, 2016 as a tropical depression in the Philippine Sea. Tracking generally north-northwestward, it intensified into a severe tropical storm and skirted northern Luzon before turning to the west-northwest, entering the South China Sea and intensifying further. Nida made landfall over Dapeng Peninsula in Shenzhen late on August 1 and dissipated on August 3.
Typhoon Cary, known as Typhoon Ising in the Philippines, was the second of two tropical cyclones to affect Vietnam in a week. An area of disturbed weather developed southwest of Pohnpei on August 6, 1987. The system initially remained disorganized, but by August 14, Cary had attained tropical storm intensity. After initially moving north-northwest, Cary turned west-northwest, although intensification was slow to occur. On August 15, Cary was upgraded into a typhoon, and on August 17, the typhoon peaked in intensity. Typhoon Cary then made landfall in northern Luzon while at peak intensity. Across the Philippines, 954 houses were damaged and an additional 89 were destroyed, which left 55,567 people, or 13,247 families that were either homeless or otherwise sought shelter. Five people died in the country while damage totaled $5.58 million (1987 USD), including $1.45 million from agriculture and $4.13 million from infrastructure. The storm weakened over land, but re-intensified into a typhoon over the South China Sea. On August 21, Typhoon Cary passed just south of Hainan, where hundreds of homes were damaged but no fatalities occurred, and subsequently entered the Gulf of Tonkin. The storm weakened as it approached Vietnam, and on August 23, the storm dissipated inland over Laos. Across Vietnam, almost 40,000 ha of land were flooded or destroyed. Twenty people were killed and many others were injured.
Typhoon Damrey, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Ramil, was a strong tropical cyclone that affected the Philippines and Vietnam during early November 2017. Damrey first originated as a tropical depression over the Philippine archipelago of Visayas on October 31. Emerging into the South China Sea a few days later, the system strengthened into the second deadliest and twenty-third named storm of the 2017 Pacific typhoon season. Rapidly intensifying, Damrey became the season's tenth typhoon on November 3, reaching its peak intensity as a Category 2 on the same day. Damrey made landfall over Khánh Hoà, Vietnam on November 4 and began to rapidly weaken, fully dissipating on November 5.
Severe Tropical Storm Kompasu, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Maring was a very large and deadly tropical cyclone that affected the Philippines, Taiwan, and southeast China. Part of the 2021 Pacific typhoon season, Kompasu originated from an area of low pressure east of the Philippines on 6 October 2021. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) classified it as a tropical depression that day. A day later, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) classified it as a tropical depression, naming it Maring. The cyclone was initially heavily disorganised, competing with another vortex, Tropical Depression Nando. Eventually, Maring became dominant, and the JMA reclassified it as a tropical storm, naming it Kompasu. Kompasu made landfall in Cagayan, Philippines, on 11 October 2021, and two days later, the storm made landfall in Hainan, China. The cyclone dissipated on 14 October 2021 while located over Vietnam.
Severe Tropical Storm Talim, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Dodong, was a compact tropical cyclone that affected the Philippines, China, and Vietnam. The fourth named storm of the 2023 Pacific typhoon season, Talim originated from a weak monsoon depression east of Manila while moving towards Luzon. The system continued to track westward close to the northern edge of mainland Luzon before emerging off the coast of Ilocos Norte. A favorable environment allowed the fledgling tropical storm to rapidly intensify to a high-end Category 1-equivalent typhoon on the Saffir–Simpson scale. The storm maintained this intensity until shortly before landfall near Zhanjiang, Guangdong on July 17. Talim quickly weakened and dissipated early on July 18.
Typhoon Yagi, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Enteng, was a powerful and destructive tropical cyclone which impacted the Philippines, China and Vietnam in early September 2024. Yagi, which means goat or the constellation of Capricornus in Japanese, is the eleventh named storm, the first violent typhoon and the first Category 5 storm of the annual typhoon season. It was one of the most intense typhoons ever to strike northern Vietnam, the strongest typhoon to strike Hainan during the meteorological autumn and the strongest since Rammasun in 2014. It is one of the only four Category 5 super typhoons recorded in the South China Sea, alongside Pamela in 1954, Rammasun in 2014 and Rai in 2021, and the third of the three storms on record to intensify to Category 5 within this sea.
