Ulil Abshar-Abdalla (born 11 January 1967 in Pati,Central Java) is an Indonesian scholar affiliated to Jaringan Islam Liberal (Liberal Islam Network). He comes from a family of Nahdlatul Ulama background:His father Abdullah Rifa'i is from pesantren Mansajul Ulum (Mansajul Ulum Islamic school) in Pati,Central Java,and he is married to the daughter of Mustofa Bisri,an Islamic cleric from Pesantren Raudlatut Talibin,Rembang,Central Java.
Ulil completed his secondary education in Madrasah Mathali'ul Falah,Kajen,Pati,Central Java. This school is led by Ahmad Sahal Mahfudz which sits in the Nahdlatul Ulama leadership board during the period of 1994‑1999. Ulil also studied in Pesantren Mansajul 'Ulum,Cebolek,Kajen,Pati,and Pondok Pesantren Al-Anwar,Sarang,Rembang,all in Central Java.
He graduated with bachelor's degree in Sharia faculty in LIPIA (Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Islam dan Arab - Islamic and Arabic Knowledge Institute) in Jakarta. He was also educated in Sekolah Tinggi Filsafat Driyarkara (Driyarkara School of Philosophy). He once held a position as chairman of Nahdlatul Ulama's Lakpesdam (Lembaga Kajian dan Pengembangan Sumber Daya Manusia - Human Resources Research and Development Centre),as a researcher in ISAI (Institut Studi Arus Informasi),Jakarta,and as Program Director in Indonesian Conference on Religion and Peace (ICRP).
He is also well known for his activism as a coordinator in Jaringan Islam Liberal,a group who claim to deliver a liberal interpretation of Islam. Due to his activism in this group,he gained praises,sometimes deemed as another reformer after Nurcholish Madjid,as well as controversies.
After completing his master's degree in religion at Boston University he went on and continued his PhD studies in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations,Harvard University.
In 2003,a group of Indonesian Islamic clerics from Forum Ulama Umat Islam issued a death fatwa against Ulil [1] for an article that Ulil wrote in Kompas in 2002,"Menyegarkan Kembali Pemahaman Islam" (Rejuvenating the Islamic Understanding) [2] [3] that is considered heretical by the clerics. In March 2011,a letter bomb addressed to Ulil at Komunitas Utan Kayu exploded,injuring a police officer.
Ulil also defended the right of the Ahmadi people,which is an uncommon stance within conservative Islam. He also opposes many of fatwas by Majelis Ulama Indonesia,such as the one forbidding to give Christmas greetings to Christians.

Nahdlatul Wathan is an Islamic socio-religious organization based in Lombok,West Nusa Tenggara province,Indonesia. The organization was established by Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Majid at Pancor,East Lombok Regency in 1953. The organization serves as a vehicle for societal movement,education,and Islamic proselytization (da'wah). It is currently the largest and the most influential Islamic mass organization in Lombok.
In July 2005,Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI),a semi-official Islamic clerical body of Indonesia,issued a fatwa,or an Islamic legal opinion,against religious pluralism,liberalism,and secularism. The issuance of fatwa garnered substantial controversy and scholarly attention. The fatwa addressed the reformist trend of Islam which had been popular among the broad Indonesian society over the past 25 years. Such trends advocated for a more substantive reading of the Quran and Hadith,instead of literalist approaches taken by the majority of ulamas. MUI considered such ideas as incompatible with Islamic teaching,releasing the fatwa to promote a more literal reading of the Islamic scriptures. The fatwa was heavily criticized by progressive Muslim intellectuals.
Kyai Hajj Abdul Wahab Hasbullah was one of the founders of the Indonesian Nahdlatul Ulama movement. He is known as one of the Muslim scholars close to President Joko Widodo. At the Zikir Kebangsaan which was first held by the Indonesian government in the Merdeka Palace in 2017,Muhtadi was one of the religious leaders invited by the president. In the 2019 Indonesian presidential election,he supported a friend who was also a Muslim cleric from Banten,Ma'ruf Amin,who became the running mate of incumbent presidential candidate,Joko Widodo. Even so,in the 2014 Indonesian presidential election,he supported Prabowo Subianto as a candidate for Indonesian President and instructed his students to vote for Subianto.
Salahuddin Wahid,colloquially known as Gus Solah,was an Indonesian Islamic scholar and politician. He originated from a Nahdlatul Ulama family,and was the younger brother of Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid. He served in the country's People's Consultative Assembly (1998–1999),and as the vice chair of the National Commission on Human Rights (2002–2004). During the 2004 Indonesian presidential election,he became the running mate to Wiranto,though the ticket lost the election.
Kyai Hajji Zubair Dahlan was an Indonesian ulama of tafsir,fiqh,uṣūl al-fiqh,and tasawwuf from Rembang Regency,Central Java. Every year,in the month of Ramadan,Zubair always routinely teaches the Tafsir al-Jalalayn to his students. In addition,he also active in teaching branches of Arabic grammar and tawhid at the Pesantren Sarang. Zubair is the father of an influential cleric in Indonesia,Maimun Zubair,and a teacher of several Nahdlatul Ulama cleric such as Sahal Mahfudz,Bisri Syansuri,and others. Some of his students later became caregivers and leaders of famous pesantren in Indonesia,such as Pondok Pesantren Lirboyo,Pondok Pesantren Sidogiri,Pondok Pesantren Al-Falah Ploso,Pondok Pesantren Mranggen,and other pesantren.
