Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter [lower-alpha 1] is a 2017 fighting game developed by Foxbat Corporation with assistance from Nu-Gaia and published exclusively for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan by BlazePro, North America by Retroism and Europe by JoshProd. Set during modern times, the game follows six fighters from three groups as they face-off in a conflict to confront the vampire Katatonia. Its gameplay consists of one-on-one fights, with a main three-button configuration, featuring special moves and four playable modes.
Headed by Foxbat CEO Tatsunori Mano, Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter was created by former SNK members who worked on several fighting game franchises, being first launched through Kickstarter but failed to meet its crowdfunding goal before Retroism acquired the publishing rights for release. The title was met with mixed reception from players and critics since its release, many of which felt divided in regards to several design aspects.
Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter is a fighting game similar to Street Fighter II . The player fights against other opponents in one-on-one matches and the fighter who manages to deplete the health bar of the opponent wins the first bout. [1] [2] [3] The first to win two bouts becomes the winner of the match. Each round is timed, which can be adjusted or deactivated in the game options; if both fighters still have health remaining when time expires, the fighter with more health wins the round. Basic attacks include a light, medium, and heavy strike. [3]
In story mode, the player can choose from six playable characters and fight against computer-controlled fighters. [1] [3] [4] A hidden character can be selected by fulfilling certain conditions. If all of the opponents are defeated, the player will be able to fight against a final boss. Like Street Fighter II, performing various motions on the direction pad along with button presses will execute special attacks that are unique to each character; [2] [3] The "Synchro Gauge" acts as a super meter that (when full) can be used to unleash a "Super Special Attack" (a more devastating special attack). Other game modes include a local two-player versus mode, survival and training. [1]
As the fear and enemy of humankind since ancient times, the "Darkness" clan disappeared from the rise of civilization but did not perish and remained alive hunting but those willing to fight back are known as "Hunters". One day, a rumor was heard for those who lived in the darkness about a coffin that sealed the strongest vampire from the Middle Ages, Katatonia, had been moved from its entombment and placed in the "Dragon Palace". The sea that gathers the "Dragon Aura" in the palace weakens and will eventually break. Katatonia will awake with his power greater than before. The Darkness clan wants the power for Katatonia while the Hunters try to contain him. [3]

Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter was co-developed by Nu-Gaia and Foxbat Corporation, a Japanese developer composed of ex-SNK staff previously involved with series such as Art of Fighting , Super Sidekicks , Samurai Shodown , The King of Fighters and The Last Blade . [7] [8] Former Brezzasoft programmer "Take Spirit" was responsible for coding. [7] [8] Artists Sachie Okumoto, Takachan ".024" Onishi and "Yoshi" drew the characters and stages respectively. Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter was first unveiled to the public in a playable state at the 2016 Hong Kong Retro Game Expo. [6] [10] [11] The game was launched by BlazePro on Kickstarter in 2017 but proved unsuccessfully in reaching its funding goal of US$52,500, raising only half of its needed funds during the campaign. [7] [12] [13] [14] [15] However, publisher Retroism later picked up distribution rights to release the title. [14] [15] It received coverage from outlets like Siliconera , The Verge and USgamer for being a new release on the Super NES, becoming the first fighting title on the platform in 21 years after Street Fighter Alpha 2 . [9] [16] [17] [18] It was first published in Japan by BlazePro on 8 April 2017, then in North America by Retroism on 19 June 2017 and later in Europe by JoshProd on 10 July 2017. Unholy Night: The Darkness Hunter was met with mixed reception from players and critics. [22] [23] Argentinian magazine Replay praised its anime-style aesthetic and character designs. [24] Bloody Disgusting 's Mike Wilson stated it was a "cool thing" seeing developers creating new games for old hardware but remarked that the title was not on par with fighting franchises such as Guilty Gear and The King of Fighters. [25] Anime News Network 's Dustin Bailey regarded it to be a "ragged mess", criticizing its controls, limited character roster and audiovisual presentation. [26] Writing for his website The Video Game Critic, David Mrozek commended its digitized-esque graphics, simple controls and "Synchro Gauge" mechanic but criticized its poor English translation and unsophisticated fighting system, among other aspects. [27] Both USgamer's Mike Williams and Alan Ricardo de Oliveira of Brazilian publication WarpZone drew comparison with Darkstalkers due to its visual style. [18] [28]

Super Mario World, known in Japan as Super Mario World: Super Mario Bros. 4, is a 1990 platform game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The player controls Mario on his quest to save Princess Peach and Dinosaur Land from the series' antagonist Bowser and the Koopalings. It is a reboot of Nintendo's Donkey Kong franchise and follows the gorilla Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong as they set out to recover their stolen banana hoard from the crocodile King K. Rool and his army, the Kremlings. The single-player traverses 40 side-scrolling levels as they jump between platforms and avoid obstacles. They collect items, ride minecarts and animals, defeat enemies and bosses, and find secret bonus stages. In multiplayer modes, two players work cooperatively or race each other.
SNK Corporation is a Japanese video gaming and interactive entertainment company. It was founded in 1978 as Shin Nihon Kikaku by Eikichi Kawasaki and began by developing coin-op games. SNK is known for its Neo Geo arcade system on which the company produced many in-house games and now-classic franchises during the 1990s, including Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, King of the Monsters, Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown, The King of Fighters, The Last Blade, Twinkle Star Sprites, and World Heroes; they continue to develop and publish new titles in some of these franchises on contemporary arcade and home platforms. Since the 2000s, SNK have diversified from their traditional arcade focus into pachislot machines, mobile game development and more recently character licensing.
The Neo Geo Pocket Color (NGPC) is a 16-bit handheld game console developed and manufactured by SNK, released on March 19, 1999 in Japan with international markets following in August that year. It is the successor to the Neo Geo Pocket, which was released in 1998 only in Japan; the Color features a color display instead of a monochrome one, and is fully backward compatible.

Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting is a competitive fighting game released by Capcom for arcades in 1992. It is the third arcade version of Street Fighter II, part of the Street Fighter franchise, following Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, and was initially released as an enhancement kit for that game. Released less than a year after the previous installment, Turbo introduced a faster playing speed and new special moves for certain characters, as well as further refinement to the character balance.
King of the Monsters is a fighting game developed by SNK, released for arcades in Japan in 1991, and ported to the Neo Geo AES later that same year. The game features playable giant monsters that are reminiscent of characters from kaiju and tokusatsu films.
Ninja Master's: Haō Ninpō Chō,, is a ninja-themed 2D fighting game produced by ADK and originally released in 1996 for the Neo Geo arcade and home platform. Ninja Master's was the sixth and final fighting game produced by ADK, following the four games in the World Heroes series and Aggressors of Dark Kombat. It was later featured in the 2008 compilation ADK Damashii for the PlayStation 2. Ninja Master's was also re-released on the Neo-Geo X handheld system in 2012, and for the Virtual Console in 2013. In 2019 it was released as part of Arcade Archives developed by Japanese company Hamster. As of 2021, Ninja Master's was released worldwide on Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. The PS4 version remains exclusive to Asia but includes both Japanese and English releases.
Top Hunter: Roddy & Cathy is a side scrolling arcade beat 'em up platform game developed by SNK for the Neo Geo in 1994. It was also released on the Neo Geo CD, and the Wii Virtual Console. The game has been re-released as part of SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1, on May 1, 2008, and in the ACA Neo Geo series on PlayStation 4 on January 10, 2018. Its development team consisted of former Irem staff members.
Samurai Shodown, known in Japan as Samurai Spirits, is a fighting game developed and published by SNK for the Neo Geo arcade and home platform. Released in 1993, it is the first installment in the Samurai Shodown series. In contrast to other fighting games at the time, which were set in modern times and focused primarily on hand-to-hand combat, Samurai Shodown is set in feudal-era Japan and was SNK's first arcade fighting game to focus primarily on weapon-based combat.

Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension is a 1996 fighting video game developed by Tose and published by Bandai for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Based upon Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball franchise, it is the last fighting game in the series to be released for SNES. Following from the Frieza saga to the conclusion of the Majin Buu saga, its gameplay is similar to the earlier Butōden entries, consisting of one-on-one fights using a main six-button configuration, featuring special moves as well as multiple game modes.
