The Atari Jaguar is a fifth generation home video game console developed by Atari Corporation and manufactured by IBM. [1] [2] First released in North America on November 23, 1993, the Jaguar was fifth and final home console under the Atari name. [3] [4] The following list includes aftermarket post-releases, as well as homebrew games made by the community for Jaguar and the Atari Jaguar CD peripheral.
In 1996, the Jaguar and game development for it were discontinued. [5] [6] Atari merged with JT Storage in 1996, while Hasbro Interactive acquired all of Atari's assets after buying out JTS in 1998. [6] [7] Hasbro Interactive declared the Jaguar as an open platform in 1999, releasing the console's patents and rights into public domain after much lobbying from Atari fans, allowing software developers to make and release games for Jaguar without a licensing agreement. [8] [9] [10] [11] Following the announcement, hobbyists have released previously finished but unpublished titles and produced homebrew games to satisfy the Jaguar's cult following. [4] [8] [12] [13] Consequently, these titles are not endorsed or licensed by Atari.
Homebrew games for Jaguar and Jaguar CD are distributed in either cartridge, CD-ROM, or both formats, complete with packaging mimicking officially licensed Jaguar releases. Most homebrew titles are released physically via independent publishers like AtariAge, Good Deal Games, and Songbird Productions. [14] Some of the earliest homebrew software for Jaguar were written using a hacked Jaguar console. [15] Earlier CD releases were not encrypted, requiring either a bypass cartridge or a booting program in order to run unencrypted CDs. [16] [17] In 2003, Atari historian Curt Vendel released the binaries and encryption keys for both cartridge and CD formats, allowing to run software without development hardware. [4] [18] All homebrew games are region free, as both systems do no enforce regional locking, but some titles do not work correctly on PAL consoles. [19] Other games and demos are also distributed online by their authors.
There are currently 106 [lower-alpha 1] aftermarket and/or unlicensed post-release Atari Jaguar and Atari Jaguar CD games on this list.

The Atomiswave is a custom arcade system board and cabinet from Sammy Corporation. It is based on Sega's Dreamcast console, sharing similarities with the NAOMI, as far as it uses interchangeable game cartridges, as well as a removable module for changing the control scheme, but unlike the NAOMI, the Atomiswave does not feature expanded RAM compared to the Dreamcast.
Homebrew, when applied to video games, refers to software produced by hobbyists for proprietary video game consoles which are not intended to be user-programmable. The official documentation is often only available to licensed developers, and these systems may use storage formats that make distribution difficult, such as ROM cartridges or encrypted CD-ROMs. Many consoles have hardware restrictions to prevent unauthorized development.
Gods is a platform game by The Bitmap Brothers released for the Amiga and Atari ST in 1991. The player is cast as Hercules in his quest to achieve immortality. It was ported to the Acorn Archimedes, Genesis/Mega Drive, PC98, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and Atari Jaguar.
I-War is a 1995 shooter video game developed by Imagitec Design and published by Atari Corporation for the Atari Jaguar. The plot takes place in a futuristic setting where the mainframe supercomputer Override begins to mutate databases and create computer viruses. The player is tasked with piloting an antivirus tank vehicle to eliminate mutated databases and viruses clogging the I-Way network, while recovering data pods and facing off against a variety of enemies.
Xenon 2: Megablast is a 1989 shoot 'em up video game developed by The Bitmap Brothers and published by Image Works for the Amiga and Atari ST. It was later converted to the Master System, PC-98, X68000, Mega Drive, Commodore CDTV, Game Boy, Acorn Archimedes and Atari Jaguar platforms. The game is a sequel to Xenon and takes place a millennium after the previous title. The goal of the game is to destroy a series of bombs planted throughout history by the Xenites, the vengeful antagonists of the first game.
Alien vs Predator is a 1994 first-person shooter developed by Rebellion Developments and published by Atari Corporation for the Atari Jaguar. It was also distributed in Japan by Mumin Corporation, where it became a pack-in game for the console. It is the first entry in the Alien vs. Predator franchise developed by Rebellion. Taking place in a simulation depicting the fall of the Golgotha training base camp, the game offers three playable scenarios: Alien, Predator, or a human of the Colonial Marines. The player is presented with a series of interconnected sublevels and ships to progress through. Each character has different objectives, abilities, weapons, and disadvantages.
Metal Slug 6 is a run and gun video game for the Sammy Atomiswave arcade platform in the Metal Slug series. It was released in 2006.
Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors is a canceled minigame compilation developed by Absolute Entertainment and starring the magician duo Penn & Teller. It comprises six minigames used to play practical jokes on others: Two party tricks, two multiplayer "scams" in which one player can unfairly influence or interrupt the gameplay, the beat 'em up Smoke and Mirrors, and Desert Bus, in which the player must drive a bus over an empty, straight road for eight hours to score one point. Penn & Teller designed the game alongside Barry Marx, while Eddie Gorodetsky provided the concept for Desert Bus. The compilation was announced in 1994 for a release at the end of the year, which was later rescheduled for April Fools' Day 1995. Although the Sega CD version was finished on time and review copies were soon sent out, the financially stricken Absolute Entertainment could not afford to ship the game.
Brett Hull Hockey is an ice hockey video game developed by Radical Entertainment and originally published by Accolade for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in January 1994. It prominently features former Canadian-American NHL player Brett Hull and is officially licensed from the NHL Players' Association.
Battlemorph is a 1995 shooter video game developed by Attention to Detail (ATD) and published by Atari Corporation for the Atari Jaguar CD. It is the sequel to Cybermorph (1993), a pack-in game for the Atari Jaguar. Taking place 30 years after the events of the original game, the player pilots the morphing infiltration fighter War Griffon in an extermination mission against the Pernitia empire, which plans to launch a full-scale invasion to eradicate humanity and take over the galaxy after being pushed back to their home planet. The player is tasked with various objectives, while fighting against enemies and bosses, across eight galaxy clusters in order to liberate them from control of the empire.
Nightmare Busters is a 2013 run and gun action video game developed by Arcade Zone and Super Fighter Team for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the first new game for the console in North America since Frogger (1998), fourteen years after being discontinued in North America. A mobile phone version called Flynn's Adventure was released in 2004. A revival titled Nightmare Busters: Rebirth was announced in 2021 for consoles and PC. The game follows the leprechaun twin brothers Flynn and Floyd on their journey to stop Tyrant from infiltrating and turning children's dreams into nightmares. The player is tasked with fighting off enemies by using playing cards and magic attacks across six stages, populated with an assortment of obstacles.
Protector is a scrolling shooter video game developed by Bethesda Softworks for the Atari Jaguar. The game was released in 1999, with the enhanced edition Protector: Special Edition released in 2002 and the Atari Jaguar CD expansion pack Protector: Resurgence released in 2014. Set in a future where an interstellar war broke out when alien forces arrived on Earth, the player controls the Starblade ship to defeat waves of invading aliens while protecting the inhabitants of Haven-7.
Joystick was a French computer magazine that published monthly issues on PC games. It was founded in 1988 by Marc Andersen, who later left in November 1995. Originally published in the form of a 32-page weekly magazine in 1988 and 1989, it saw monthly 148-page issues past 1990.
