It forms part of the South Coast Plaza–John Wayne Airport edge city, a concentration of business, shopping, and entertainment outside a traditional central business district. The edge city's area is defined to include John Wayne Airport, the Irvine Business Complex (IBC), The District and The Market Place shopping centers, and the University of California, Irvine campus. This larger definition extends into Newport Beach, Irvine, and Tustin.
The McFaddin and Texas Point National Wildlife Refuges are located in proximity in southern Jefferson County on the upper Texas coast at Sabine Pass. The refuges have a combined 105.96 square miles (274.4 km2) of fish and wildlife habitat. McFaddin, much the larger one, located at around 29°40′00″N94°09′00″W, has a total area of 58,861.43 acres (238.2038 km2), while the smaller Texas Point, located at around 29°42′00″N93°53′00″W, has 8,952.02 acres (36.2275 km2).

The Gwa'sala-Nakwaxda'xw Nations are an amalgamation of two Kwakwaka'wakw peoples in a band government based on northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia, whose main reserve community is near the town of Port Hardy in the Queen Charlotte Strait region of the Central Coast region of British Columbia, Canada. In the 1960s the Gwa'sala (Gwaʼsa̱la), the 'Nakwaxda'xw (ʼNakʼwaxdaʼx̱w) and the Kwakiutl peoples were amalgamated. Eventually the Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations and the Kwakiutl First Nation separated into the two groups that are recognized by the federal government to this day. Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw Nations were forcibly relocated from their homelands to a location near Port Hardy.

Ölkelda is the Icelandic term for mineral spring, derived from the Old Norse language and means "holy ale well", from the words öl (“ale”) and kelda. It is these natural qualities that are found in natural earthen spring water on the premises of Ölkelda farm.
