WWE, an American professional wrestling promotion based in Stamford, Connecticut in the United States has been promoting events in India since 1996 when they were the World Wrestling Federation.
WWE first toured the country in 1996. [1] [2] The next time WWE came to India was in November 2002, visiting New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. [3] The company returned to New Delhi in January 2016 for the two days event what was the first WWE event in India in 13 years. [4] On 9 December 2017, a house show titled WWE Live India Supershow was held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. [5] [6]
WWE has had a broadcasting relationship with Sony Pictures Networks since 2002, most recently renewed under a five-year deal beginning in 2020. Alongside broadcasts of its main weekly programs, WWE has produced localized programming in Hindi for the region, including WWE Sunday Dhamaal, for Sony Max, [7] and WWE Now India with Gaelyn Mendonca for its YouTube channel. [8] WWE has considered India to be one its largest international markets; in 2019, WWE's Senior Director of Talent Development Canyon Ceman stated that that Raw and SmackDown had an average of 50 million viewers weekly on SPN. [9]
In January 2019, Triple H stated that the WWE would eventually open a Performance Center in India. [10] [11] Two months later, the first ever WWE tryouts in India were held, in which approximately 60 men and 20 women were shortlisted. [12] [13] [14] For Republic Day, 22 January 2021, WWE produced its first televised event special targeting the Indian market, Superstar Spectacle, which featured matches showcasing current and developmental WWE talent of Indian heritage. It was simulcast with English and Hindi commentary across Sony TEN and Sony Max. [15] [16] [17]
A number of WWE performers have also visited India as part of promotional tours.

WWE have produced several television series for their Indian audience over the years. Since 27 February 2018, they have aired live telecasts of Raw and SmackDown in Hindi. [44] [45] Live Tamil and Telugu language commentary was introduced in 2021. [46]
On 7 May 2007, a new WWE show for children named WWE 24X7 premiered on Jetix in India, which shown matches from their archives. [47] [48]
WWE started airing taped shows on Ten Sports in January 2015. Through this deal, an exclusive localised Raw recap show was made for the Indian market. [49] The localised Raw show would later be announced as Raw Sunday Dhamaal, a short-lived show which was replaced by WWE Sunday Dhamaal. [50] [51] The show was perceived well with audiences, gaining an 'upward swing' of viewers after it had launched. [52]
From 2015 to 2017, a recap show produced by the WWE named Action Mania, aired on Zee Cinema in Hindi exclusively in India. [53]
In 2020 Sony Pictures launched two Studio shows Blockbusters and Dhamaal League. [54] [55]
Several WWE superstars made special appearances in various shows during their promotional tour in India. Kofi Kingston and Big E appeared on the 10 May 2017 episode of Extraaa Innings T20. [56] [57] Months later, in October 2017, Jinder Mahal appeared in an episode of Sony SAB's sitcom Sajan Re Phir Jhooth Mat Bolo. [58] [59] In 2018, Matt Hardy made a special appearance in singing reality show Indian Idol. [60] [61] In 2019, The New Day appeared on an episode of dance reality show Super Dancer . [62]
In 2021, WWE taped a special India centric show WWE Superstar Spectacle on 22 January 2021 and aired it on 26 January, the Republic Day of India. [63] The second Superstar Spectacle event was held on 8 September 2023. Unlike the 2021 event, the 2023 event was a house show. [64] It was later aired as Namaste India on Sony Sports Network on 2 October 2023. [65]
A 1999 episode of Sunday Night Heat was criticized for a segment featuring Kurt Angle and Tiger Ali Singh in which Angle blew his nose in the Indian national flag. [66] On 15 January 2016, days before the WWE arrived in India for their house show events in 2016, a group named Aadvanshi Veer Sena threatened to protest against the company's tour unless they apologised for Angle's incident. [67] Five days after their claims to protest if an apology was not given, WWE International's Executive Vice President, Gerrit Meier, apologised for the incident, saying: "This case is about 20-years-ago and we did not deliberately do that. We have a great respect for the country. We are sorry that it happened, but we had no intention of doing it. India is a reputable country and we apologise for this… We are extremely pleased that India is hosting the live events again. There are good number of fans and I am confident that they will enjoy it all. Nearly 14 years later, we are once again on the ground of India will play a WWE match." [68] [69]
The Sony Sports Network, formerly known as the Sony Pictures Sports Network and also known as Sony TEN, is a group of Indian pay television sports channels owned by Culver Max Entertainment.
The WWE United States Championship is a men's professional wrestling championship promoted by the American promotion WWE, defended on the SmackDown brand division. It is one of two secondary championships for WWE's main roster, along with the WWE Intercontinental Championship on Raw. The current champion is LA Knight, who is in his first reign. He won the title by defeating Logan Paul at SummerSlam on August 3, 2024.
Dara Singh Randhawa was an Indian professional wrestler, actor, director and politician. He started acting in 1952 and was the first sportsman to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha of India. He worked as Hindi and Punjabi film producer, director and writer, and he acted in films and television. His role of Hanuman in the film Bajrangbali (1976) and in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan made him popular. Singh was inducted into the Legacy wing of the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2018.
Dalip Singh Rana is an Indian-born American retired professional wrestler and wrestling promoter better known by his ring name The Great Khali. He is best known for his tenure in WWE where he became the first Indian-born World Heavyweight Champion in history. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021.
Austin Watson is an American professional wrestler. He is currently signed to WWE, where he performs on the Raw brand under the ring name Xavier Woods and is part of The New Day. Watson also makes public appearances outside of wrestling under the name Austin Creed.
Rinku Singh Rajput is an Indian professional wrestler and former professional baseball player. He is also known for his tenure in WWE, where he performed under the ring name Veer Mahaan, or simply Veer.
Yuvraj Singh Dhesi is a Canadian professional wrestler. He is currently performing on the independent circuit under his real name, stylized as Raj Dhesi. He also makes appearances under the ring name "The Maharaja"Raj Dhesi for various promotions like Game Changer Wrestling (GCW), Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA), where he is 1-half of the current AAA World Tag Team Champions in his first reign, and International Wrestling Association. He is best known for his tenure in WWE, where he performed under the ring name Jinder Mahal and is a former 1-time WWE Champion, WWE United States Champion, and 2-time WWE 24/7 Champion.
Chidiya Ghar is a sitcom which aired on Sony SAB from 28 November 2011 to 2 October 2017. The series was produced by Ashwni Dhir under the banner of Garima Productions. The show gets its name "Chidiya Ghar" because Chidiya Ghar means "zoo" in Hindi as all the characters in this show have animal names of the hindi language.
SonyLIV is an Indian subscription video-on-demand over-the-top streaming service owned by Culver Max Entertainment. SonyLIV was introduced in 2013 as the first OTT service in India. As a streaming service, it provides live sports, original titles, other content titles from its own networks and content titles in India licensed from third-parties such as Lionsgate and ITV among others. The Sony Liv content library includes films, TV shows and series, and sports.
FreeAgentZ were an American professional wrestling tag team composed of nZo and CaZXL. The duo are best known for their tenure with WWE, from 2013 to 2017, under the respective ring names, Enzo Amore and Big Cass. After their separate departures from the WWE, the two reunited in 2019, when they appeared at G1 Supercard.
The Bollywood Boyz are a Canadian professional wrestling tag team composed of brothers Gurvinder "Gurv" Sihra and Harvinder "Harv" Sihra. They are best known for their time in WWE, where Gurvinder and Harvinder performed under the ring names Sunil Singh and Samir Singh, respectively.
The 2017 Backlash was the 13th Backlash professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestreaming event produced by WWE. It was held exclusively for wrestlers from the promotion's SmackDown brand division. The event took place on May 21, 2017, at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois. It was only the second Backlash event to be held in the Allstate Arena, after the 2001 event.
The 2017 WWE Superstar Shake-up was the eleventh WWE draft – and the first to be rebranded as the Superstar Shake-up – produced by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE between the Raw and SmackDown brands. Instead of a traditional draft, changes between the brands were made behind the scenes, with moving wrestlers simply appearing on a brand's show or announced via WWE's website or social medias. It was a two-day event that took place on the April 10 and 11 episodes of Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live, respectively, on the USA Network in the United States. Raw was broadcast from Uniondale, New York at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, while SmackDown was broadcast from Boston, Massachusetts at TD Garden.
The 2018 Backlash was the 14th Backlash professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestreaming event produced by WWE. It was held for wrestlers from the promotion's Raw and SmackDown brand divisions. The event took place on May 6, 2018, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. It was the first Backlash event since 2009 to feature multiple brands during a brand split. In 2019, Backlash was replaced by Stomping Grounds, but Backlash was reinstated in 2020.
The 2017 Clash of Champions was the second Clash of Champions professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestreaming event produced by WWE. It was held exclusively for wrestlers from the promotion's SmackDown brand division. The event took place on December 17, 2017, at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. As per the theme of the event, all championships exclusive to SmackDown at the time were defended. The event was replaced by Evolution in 2018, but returned in 2019.
The 2018 Money in the Bank was the ninth annual Money in the Bank professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and livestreaming event produced by WWE. It was held for wrestlers from the promotion's Raw and SmackDown brand divisions. The event took place on June 17, 2018, at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois, and was the second Money in the Bank held at this venue after the 2011 event.
Gurvinder Singh Malhotra is an Indian professional wrestler. He is best known for his tenure in WWE, where he performed under the ring name Shanky. He is also known for his tenure in Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE).
WWE Superstar Spectacle is a series of professional wrestling events produced by the American company WWE. The events have primarily targeted the promotion's Indian market, and have showcased talent of Indian heritage.
Professional wrestling is a popular sport in India. The country has a rich history of professional wrestling and many professional wrestlers from India have worked around the world in various promotions. International wrestling promotions such as WWE and Impact Wrestling generate high television viewership and have a significant fan following in India.
Kingston, who along with the rest of The New Day was in Mumbai to support India's first-ever WWE Tryouts, said that a lot has changed since the time he first came into the WWE.
Five-time WWE tag team champions 'The New Day' along with local NXT talents like Kavita Devi, Jeet Rama, Saurav Gurjar, Rinku Singh and Jinny Sadhu were also in Mumbai for the event.

Nearly 17 years ago, on March 7, 1999 to be precise, former wrestler Kurt Angle made his debut on Saturday Night Heat and blew his nose on the Indian national flag.
While the fans are enthralled to watch their favorite heroes in reality for the first time, the Indian political scenario does not seem to be excited. A Hindu group, Aadvanshi Veer Sena has claimed to protest against their arrival in India.
