The Washington Wolfpack are a professional indoor football team based in Everett in the U.S. state of Washington. They were announced as one of the inaugural teams for the revived Arena Football League (AFL), beginning play in 2024. They are now members of Arena Football One.
The original Arena Football League (AFL) first started in 1987 and continued operating until 2009, when it went bankrupt. [1] The league was brought back in 2010 and continued until folding a second time due to bankruptcy following the 2019 season. [1] Everett, Washington, has had several professional indoor football teams in their history: the Everett Hawks played in the AFL's developmental league (AF2) for several years until folding in 2007, the Everett Destroyers were proposed as an inaugural member of the Indoor Football League (IFL) in 2009 but never played, and in 2012 the city had the Everett Raptors in the IFL. [2]
Four years after the original AFL folded for the second time, it was announced on February 1, 2023, that the league intended on relaunching in 2024. [3] On July 18, the 16 intended market cities were announced, including Everett. [4] Officials in several of the cities stated they were surprised at the announcement and were unaware of an AFL team coming. [2] The manager of Angel of the Winds Arena, Everett's only major arena, said that he was only informed about it after the announcement was made, and after contacting Lee Hutton, AFL commissioner, received notice that the league would only reveal information "on our time". [2]
Details about the Everett team were scant in the weeks following the announcement. [5] Eventually, an agreement with Angel of the Winds Arena was secured in late September. [5] Everett Arena Football Club LLC was announced as the ownership group, led by Mike Thomas, the owner of the semi-pro Everett Royals. [5] Thomas noted that he had acquired the franchise after contacting the league in hopes of getting Royals players onto the squad, only to find that the league had not yet lined up an owner for the city's team at the time. [5]
J. R. Wells, a former player for the Everett Hawks and offensive coordinator for the Royals, was announced as the team's first head coach. [5] Several sponsorship deals were also announced, including with Major League Pizza, Tony V's Garage and Buzz Inn Steakhouse. [5] A poll to select the team's name was held in mid-October with four options: Night Howlers, Wolfpack, Cascades and Werewolves. [6] On October 26, the team name was officially announced as the Washington Wolfpack. [7] The 2024 AFL season is scheduled to begin in April 2024. [5] Their main geographic rivals in the new AFL were the Billings Outlaws and the Oregon Blackbears.
On April 27, 2024, the Wolfpack lost their debut game on the road 40-47 to the Blackbears.
On May 12, 2024, kicker Melissa Strother made an extra point while playing for the Wolfpack, making her the first female player to score a point in the Arena Football League. [8]
On September 4, 2024, the Wolfpack joined the remaining members of the collapsed AFL in forming the new Arena Football One. They will play in the West Division along with the Arizona Bandits, Billings Outlaws and Oregon Lightning.

Arena football is a variety of gridiron football designed to be played indoors. The game is played on a smaller field than American or Canadian football, designed to fit in the same surface area as a standard North American ice hockey rink, and features between six and eight players for each team playing at any given time depending on the league, resulting in a faster and higher-scoring game that can be played on the floors of indoor arenas. The sport was invented in 1981, and patented in 1987, by Jim Foster, a former executive of the National Football League and the United States Football League. The name is trademarked by Gridiron Enterprises and had a proprietary format until its patent expired in 2007.

On June 30, 2016, the team announced it would go dormant for the 2017 season and beyond.
The Spokane Shock were a professional indoor American football team based in Spokane, Washington, that played their home games at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. The team was initially a member of arenafootball2 (af2), the Shock won division titles in all four seasons and ArenaCups in 2006 and 2009 before they joined the Arena Football League (AFL) in its 2010 relaunch. The team advanced to the playoffs three times after joining the AFL, winning ArenaBowl XXIII in their first season, making them the only arena football franchise to win both the ArenaCup and the ArenaBowl.
The Indoor Football League (IFL) is a professional indoor American football league created in 2008 out of the merger between the Intense Football League and United Indoor Football. It has one of the largest number of currently active teams among indoor football leagues. As of the 2024 season, the league consists of 16 teams in two conferences with each team playing 16 games over 19 weeks.

The 2017 Arena Football League season was the 30th season in the history of the Arena Football League (AFL). Prior to the start of the season, the league contracted to five teams. Due to this, for the first time since 1991, the league was not divided into conferences or divisions. The 14-game regular season began on April 7, 2017, when the two new teams, the Baltimore Brigade and the Washington Valor, faced off in the Verizon Center, and ended on August 5, 2017, when the Tampa Bay Storm lost against the Philadelphia Soul.
The Billings Outlaws are a professional indoor football team that began play as a member of Champions Indoor Football for the 2022 season. Based in Billings, Montana, the Outlaws play their home games at MetraPark First Interstate Arena. For 2024, they have been announced as members of the revived Arena Football League. They are the 2024 AFL champions, defeating the Albany Firebirds 46–41 at the American Dream Mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey. In 2025, they will become inaugural members of the newly-formed Arena Football One.
The Rapid City Marshals were a professional indoor football team based in Rapid City, South Dakota. The Marshals played their home games at the Summit Arena at The Monument. The Albany Firebirds are a professional arena football team and are an inaugural team in Arena Football One. They started as an inaugural member of the ill-fated third iteration of the Arena Football League. The team is based in Albany, New York. Home games are played at the MVP Arena. This is the third time the Firebirds name has been used, first from 1990 to 2004 with the original Albany and Indiana Firebirds from the original AFL, and the Albany Firebirds of the af2 in 2009.
The Oregon Blackbears were a professional indoor football team based in Salem, Oregon. They were announced as one of the inaugural teams for the revived Arena Football League (AFL), beginning play in 2024. They play at the Oregon State Fairgrounds Pavilion in Salem. The Blackbears spent much of its existence in a state of uncertainty after a league reorganization early in the 2024 season, having twice been removed from, then restored to the league, as original owner and original league president Travelle Gaines was ousted from the league midseason and never sold the team to an ownership group that had agreed to take over the team's operations and allow it to continue. Because of this, the Blackbears were not carried over to Arena Football One but were replaced with a different team, the Oregon Lightning, with new ownership and much of the same staff.
The 2024 Arena Football League season was the first season in the new version of the Arena Football League (AFL), and the 33rd season of play in the history of the Arena Football League brand.
