Xi Aquilae (ξ Aquilae, abbreviated Xi Aql, ξ Aql), officially named Libertas /ˈlɪbərtæs/ , [10] is a red-clump giant star located at a distance of 186 light-years (57 parsecs ) from the Sun in the equatorial constellation of Aquila. As of 2008, an extrasolar planet (designated Xi Aquilae b, later named Fortitudo) has been confirmed in orbit around the star. [11]
ξ Aquilae (Latinised to Xi Aquilae) is the star's Bayer designation. Following its discovery the planet was designated Xi Aquilae b.
In July 2014 the International Astronomical Union launched NameExoWorlds, a process for giving proper names to certain exoplanets and their host stars. [12] The process involved public nomination and voting for the new names. [13] In December 2015, the IAU announced the winning names were Libertas for this star and Fortitudo for its planet. [14]
The winning names were those submitted by Libertyer, a student club at Hosei University of Tokyo, Japan. The names which were originally proposed were in English and were 'Liberty' and 'Fortitude', but to comply with the IAU's rules they were modified to be Latin versions of the same words, and so the final names became 'Libertas' and 'Fortitudo' respectively. 'Aquila' is Latin for 'eagle', a popular symbol of liberty and embodiment of fortitude—emotional and mental strength in the face of adversity. [15]
In 2016, the IAU organized a Working Group on Star Names (WGSN) [16] to catalog and standardize proper names for stars. In its first bulletin of July 2016, [17] the WGSN explicitly recognized the names of exoplanets and their host stars approved by the Executive Committee Working Group Public Naming of Planets and Planetary Satellites, including the names of stars adopted during the 2015 NameExoWorlds campaign. This star is now so entered in the IAU Catalog of Star Names. [10]
This star has an apparent visual magnitude of 4.722, [2] which, according to the Bortle Dark-Sky scale, is bright enough to be viewed with the naked eye from dark suburban skies. The orbital motion of the Earth causes this star to undergo an annual parallax shift of 17.51 milliarcseconds. From this measurement, the distance to this star can be determined, yielding an estimate of approximately 186 light-years with an error of 1 light year. [1] The magnitude of the star is diminished by 0.09 from the extinction caused by interstellar gas and dust. [18]
The spectrum of this star is considered a standard example of the stellar classification G9.5 IIIb, [3] where the G9.5 means that it belongs to the category of G-type stars while the luminosity class of IIIb indicates that, at an estimated age of nearly one billion year, [8] is an evolved star that has reached the giant stage. It is in the red clump, [19] meaning it is generating energy through the fusion of helium into carbon at its core.
Xi Aquilae has an estimated 174% of the Sun's mass. [7] Its size has been measured using interferometry at the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer, which yields a radius ten times that of the Sun. [8] It is radiating 58.5 times the Sun's luminosity at an effective temperature of 4,841 K , [7] giving it the golden-hued glow of a G-type star. [20] The possibility of a binary stellar companion can be ruled out based upon observations with the CHARA array. [21]
In 2008, the presence of a planetary companion was announced, based upon Doppler spectroscopy results from the Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. This object, designated as Xi Aquilae b, has at least 2.8 Jupiter masses and is orbiting at an estimated 0.68 astronomical unit from the star with a period of 136.75 days. [11] Any planets that once orbited to the interior of this object may have been consumed as the star entered the red giant stage and expanded in radius. [22] Later in 2024, astrometric measurements place an upper limit in the mass of 37.1 MJ based on Gaia astrometry. [23]

Upsilon Andromedae is a binary star located 44 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Andromeda. The system consists of an F-type main-sequence star and a smaller red dwarf.

Mu Arae, often designated HD 160691, officially named Cervantessur-VAN-teez, is a main sequence G-type star approximately 50 light-years away from the Sun in the constellation of Ara. The star has a planetary system with four known extrasolar planets, three of them with masses comparable with that of Jupiter. Mu Arae c, the innermost, was the first hot Neptune or super-Earth discovered.
47 Ursae Majoris, formally named Chalawan, is a yellow dwarf star approximately 45.3 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Ursa Major. As of 2011, three extrasolar planets are believed to orbit the star.
Epsilon Tauri or ε Tauri, formally named Ain, is an orange giant star located approximately 146 light-years from the Sun in the constellation of Taurus. An exoplanet is believed to be orbiting the star.
HD 149026, also named Ogma, is a yellow subgiant star approximately 250 light-years from the Sun in the constellation of Hercules. An extrasolar planet is believed to orbit the star.
Xi Andromedae, officially named Adhil, is a solitary star in the northern constellation of Andromeda. It has an apparent magnitude of +4.9. Based on parallax measurements obtained during the Gaia mission, it lies at a distance of roughly 223 light-years from the Sun.
14 Andromedae, abbreviated 14 And, also named Veritate, is a single, orange-hued giant star situated approximately 247 light-years away in the northern constellation of Andromeda. It is dimly visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 5.22. The star is moving closer to the Earth with a heliocentric radial velocity of −60 km/s. In 2008 an extrasolar planet was discovered to be orbiting the star.
Xi Cancri is a spectroscopic binary star system in the zodiac constellation of Cancer. It is visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of +5.15. Based upon parallax measurements obtained during the Hipparcos mission, it is roughly 370 light-years distant from the Sun.
HD 16175 is a 7th magnitude G-type star with temperature about 6000 K located 196 light-years away in the Andromeda constellation. This star is only visible through binoculars or better equipment; it is also 3.3 times more luminous, is 1.34 times more massive, and has a radius 1.66 times bigger than our local star.
HD 104985, formally named Tonatiuh, is a solitary star with a exoplanetary companion in the northern constellation of Camelopardalis. The companion is designated HD 104985 b and named Meztli. This star has an apparent visual magnitude of 5.78 and thus is dimly visible to the naked eye under favorable seeing conditions. It is located at a distance of approximately 329 light years from the Sun based on parallax, but is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −20 km/s.
Xi Aquilae b, formally named Fortitudo, is an extrasolar planet approximately 184 light-years from the Sun in the constellation of Aquila. The planet was discovered orbiting the yellow giant star Xi Aquilae in 2008. The planet has a minimum mass of 2.8 Jupiter and a period of 137 days.
41 Lyncis b, also designated HD 81688 b and named Arkas, is an extrasolar planet approximately 280 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Ursa Major.
18 Delphini b, formally named Arion, is an extrasolar planet approximately 249 light-years away in the constellation of Delphinus.
HD 104985 b, also named Meztli, is an extrasolar planet approximately 97 parsecs (317 lys) from the Sun. The 198-day period planet orbits the yellow giant star HD 104985 (Tonatiuh) at a distance of 0.78 AU. With a mass 61/3 times Jupiter it is a gas giant.
41 Lyncis, also designated HD 81688 and named Intercrus, is a fifth-magnitude star located in the northern constellation of Ursa Major. An extrasolar planet is thought to be orbiting the star.
18 Delphini, also named Musica, is a single star in the constellation of Delphinus of the low northern hemisphere. It has a Sun-like golden hue and is faintly visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 5.506. The star is located at a distance of approximately 249 light years from the Sun based on parallax, and it is drifting further away with a radial velocity of +4 km/s. An object believed to be an extrasolar planet orbits the star.
42 Draconis, formally named Fafnir, is a 5th magnitude K-type giant star located approximately 295 light years away in the constellation of Draco. As of 2009, an extrasolar planet is thought to be orbiting the star.
WASP-19, formally named Wattle, is a magnitude 12.3 star about 869 light-years away, located in the Vela constellation of the southern hemisphere. This star has been found to host a transiting hot Jupiter-type planet in tight orbit.
