The 2024 Kentucky Supreme Court election will be held in the 5th district of the Kentucky Supreme Court on November 5, 2024. The court consists of seven justices elected in nonpartisan elections to staggered eight-year terms. Districts 5, composed of eight counties in the Lexington area, [lower-alpha 1] is the only district up for election in 2024. [1]
In September 2023, incumbent justice Laurance B. VanMeter announced that he would not seek reelection. [2] Two candidates filed for the seat: appellate judge Pamela Goodwine and attorney Erin Izzo. Goodwine has received support from Democratic politicians such as Kentucky governor Andy Beshear. [3] The outcome of the election could impact the ideological balance of the court, which in recent years has issued contentious rulings on subjects such as abortion and redistricting. [4]

Ernest Lee Fletcher is an American physician and politician who was the 60th governor of Kentucky from 2003 to 2007. He previously served three consecutive terms in the United States House of Representatives before resigning after being elected governor. A member of the Republican Party, Fletcher was a family practice physician and a Baptist lay minister and is the second physician to be elected Governor of Kentucky; the first was Luke P. Blackburn in 1879. He was also the first Republican governor of Kentucky since Louie Nunn left office in 1971.

Mary C. Noble is the former Secretary of the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and a former Deputy Chief Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court. Noble was elected to the court in November 2006 where she represented the 5th Supreme Court District. She defeated appointed Justice John C. Roach. Prior to that election, she served as a circuit judge in Fayette County. Chief Justice John D. Minton Jr. named Noble Deputy Chief Justice on September 1, 2010. Prior to her election to the Supreme Court, Noble was elected to the Fayette Fifth Circuit Court in 1991, and she was re-elected in 2000. Noble retired from the bench in 2017.
Steven Lynn Beshear is an American attorney and politician who served as the 61st governor of Kentucky from 2007 to 2015. He served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1974 to 1980, was the state's 44th attorney general from 1980 to 1983 and was the 49th lieutenant governor from 1983 to 1987.

Whitney H. Westerfield is an American attorney, politician and a Republican member of the Kentucky Senate representing District 3 since January 8, 2013. In 2015, Westerfield was the unsuccessful Republican nominee for Attorney General of Kentucky, losing to Democrat Andy Beshear by a margin of 0.2 percent.

Senate Bill 151, also known as SB 151, is a pension bill passed on March 29, 2018, by the Kentucky Senate and the Kentucky House of Representatives. The bill includes increases for cost of living, ends the inviolable contract for new teachers hired after January 1, 2019, and requires employees hired between 2003 and 2008 to pay an additional 1 percent of their pay for health care benefits in retirement. The bill received numerous criticism, especially from teachers. The bill was overturned on December 13, 2018, by the Kentucky Supreme Court as unconstitutional, which prevented the bill from going into effect on January 1, 2019.
Daniel Jay Cameron is an American attorney and politician who served as the 51st attorney general of Kentucky from 2020 to 2024. A member of the Republican Party, Cameron was the first African American, and the first Republican since 1943, to be elected to the office. He was the Republican nominee in the 2023 Kentucky gubernatorial election, losing to incumbent Democrat Andy Beshear.

Kentucky Amendment 1 is a legislatively referred amendment to the Kentucky Constitution, which will be voted on as part of the 2024 Kentucky elections. If enacted, the amendment will allow the Kentucky General Assembly to fund charter schools.
