The 1958 Firuzabad earthquake affected Hamadan province, Iran, on 16 August at 22:43 local time. The Mw 6.7 earthquake occurred at a depth of 15 km (9.3 mi), nine months after another severe earthquake struck the same area. It caused severe damage to over 170 villages in the province. Because of several strong foreshocks, most of the population had fled their homes: the death toll thus only reached 132, with 948 injured. A destructive aftershock on 21 September killed another 16 people.
The geological region where the earthquake occurred, the Zagros Mountains, is seismically active due to ongoing tectonic convergence. As a result, the mountains hosts active faults and a fold and thrust belt to accommodate the convergence. One of these active faults is the Main Recent Fault, a right-lateral strike-slip fault. The earthquake occurred along part of this fault and surface ruptures were reported on four segments.
The Zagros Mountains, stretching for 1,500 km (930 mi) from Turkey, through Iran and Iraq, to the Gulf of Oman, formed from continental collision involving the Arabian plate and Central Iran. Its formation occurred during the late-Triassic, late-Jurassic, late-Cretaceous, Oligocene and Pliocene epochs. During its early formation, some extensional tectonics may have occurred. The mountain range is still accommodating deformation, evident from present-day seismicity. Deformation is accommodated by thrust and strike-slip faulting within the range. Parallel to the major thrust faults of the mountains is the Main Recent Fault, an active right-lateral strike-slip fault. [3] Convergence between the Arabian plate and Iran occurs obliquely along the Zagros Mountains, and approximately 30–50 percent of the ~25 cm (9.8 in) per year convergence between the two plates is accommodated along the range. [4]
The Main Recent Fault delineates the northeastern boundary of the seismically active Zagros Mountains, having formed about five million years ago. It runs parallel to the Main Zagros Reverse Fault, a suture zone separating the metamorphic rocks of the Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone from the fold and thrust belt. The fault comprises several segments with lengths of more than 100 km (62 mi). Southwest of the Main Recent Fault lies the continental margin of Arabia, while the rocks to the northeast are of metamorphic and volcanic origin. Its southeastern segments end in a zone of north–northwest trending strike-slip faults that offset the series of mountainous features. The strike-slip component of this oblique convergence is accommodated along the Main Recent Fault. The southeastern segments are more seismically active in contrast to the northwestern segments. [5]
Aftershock activity associated with the 13 December 1957 Farsinaj earthquake stopped in mid-February 1958. On 14 August, at 14:00 local time, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake was felt strongly in Asadabad, Nahavand and Tuyserkan, scaring residents. A magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred at 19:30; described as violent, it damaged several nearby villages. These two shocks were accompanied by a series of smaller earthquakes; the largest measuring 4.7. There was also a magnitude 4.5 event two hours prior to the mainshock on 17 August, causing minor damage to villages. These earthquakes caused panic among the populations and the tourists of Hamadan fled the city because of the activity. [6] : 2–6
The mainshock and its aftershocks occurred southeast of the 1957 earthquake epicenter. Both earthquakes occurred along different segments of the Main Recent Fault. Three sets of surface rupture occurred; all trending northwest–southeast on segments of the Main Recent Fault exhibited vertical offsets. One of these ran 15 km (9.3 mi) between Givaki and Cheshmeh Mahi produced up to 2 m (6 ft 7 in) of vertical offset. The rupture extended across the Garrin segment to the southeast and Sahneh segment to the northwest. The Nahavand segment was associated with another 20 km (12 mi) surface rupture that extended form Barreh Farakh to Leylan. The third surface rupture zone ran for 8 km (5.0 mi) and coincided with the southeastern part of the Sahneh segment. [7]
The earthquake was felt for 80,000 km2 (31,000 sq mi); a significantly smaller extent in comparison with the 1957 shock (180,000 km2 (69,000 sq mi)). Modified Mercalli intensity VII (Very strong) was assigned in the meizoseismal area although there were plausibly isolated instances of IX (Violent) effects. However, this was impossible to confirm as these adobe buildings are easily destroyed in VI–VII (Strong–Very strong) conditions. In the meizoseismal zone, there was no clear distinction between infrastructure damaged by the 1957 shock and its aftershocks from damage during the 1958 earthquake. [6] : 18, 20
The mainshock killed at least 132 people, injured hundreds and killed 3,000 livestock. Approximately 2,500 homes across 170 villages were levelled, rendering 10,000 homeless. The low death toll was partly the result of a foreshock that kept residents alert and a period of hot weather that compelled them to sleep on their roofs. [6] : 6
The earthquake devastated the Khezel, Solgi and Deh Now-e Sofla districts. The meizoseismal area encompassed a 1,100 km2 (420 sq mi) area along the Gamasiab River, and damage was greatest in the northwest. Four settlements, Leylas-Leylan, Jafarabad and Litagar, situated in the northwest meizoseismal zone, experienced the greatest devastation. Located some 10 km (6.2 mi) from Deh-e Bozorg-e Firuzabad, these villages were also affected by the 1957 earthquake and its aftershocks. All homes were razed, and in Leylas, cows were knocked off their feet and residents had difficulty maintaining their balance. About 200 people died or were injured in these villages. [6] : 6, 9–13
The village of Rudbari was damaged by landslides and slumps. All homes in Hoseynabad and Sharifabad were flattened; the latter settlement reported heavy livestock loss and 16 injuries. In Firuzabad, two people died from toppled adobe walls. The village of Dehkuhneh was in the process of reuilding after the 1957 shock when it was completely devastated again; there were two deaths and 23 injuries. Slumping of a riverbank near Deh-e Bozorg-e Firuzabad damaged a bridge while the village experienced widespread damage and collapses. The shaking at Asadabad collapsed one home in the city and buried a person. Three people died and nine were injured in the flattened town of Barfaragh. [6] : 6, 9–13
The mainshock was followed by three aftershocks exceeding magnitude 5.0; another thirty had magnitudes between 4.0 and 4.9. On 17 August, one damaged several homes in Kangavar and two in Karkhaneh. Several people died in Asadabad and Akbarabad when homes crumbled during an aftershock in the early morning of 19 August. The most destructive aftershock occurred in Dinavar District on 21 September, devastating a 100 km2 (39 sq mi) region northwest of the 1957 meizoseismal area. Preceded by a damaging sequence of earthquakes several hours earlier, this magnitude 5.2 shock killed 16 people and devastated Karkasar, Karaj, Balajub, Gamshah, and Kolehjub. Fifty-seven injuries were reported in the villages of Karkasar and Karaj. Some homes in Karaj sustained damage. [6] : 16, 18
An earthquake occurred on November 27, 2005, at 13:52 IRST on the sparsely populated Qeshm Island off Southern Iran, killing 13 people and devastating 13 villages. It was Iran's second major earthquake of 2005, following the one at Zarand in February. The epicenter was about 1,500 kilometers (930 mi) south of Tehran, close to Iran's southern borders. Initial measurements showed that the earthquake registered about 6.0 on the moment magnitude scale, although that was reduced to 5.8 after further analysis. More than 400 minor aftershocks followed the main quake, 36 of which were greater than magnitude 2.5. The earthquake occurred in a remote area during the middle of the day, limiting the number of fatalities. Iranian relief efforts were effective and largely adequate, leading the country to decline offers of support from other nations and UNICEF.
The Dasht-e Bayaz and Ferdows earthquakes occurred in Dashte Bayaz, Kakhk and Ferdows, Iran in late August and early September 1968. The mainshock measured 7.1 on the moment magnitude scale and had a maximum perceived intensity of X (Extreme) on the Mercalli intensity scale. Damage was heavy in the affected areas with thousands of lives lost in the first event and many hundreds more in the second strong event.
The San Jacinto Fault Zone (SJFZ) is a major strike-slip fault zone that runs through San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego, and Imperial Counties in Southern California. The SJFZ is a component of the larger San Andreas transform system and is considered to be the most seismically active fault zone in the area. Together they relieve the majority of the stress between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates.
The 1909 Borujerd earthquake also known as Silakhor earthquake occurred in Silakhor plain, Qajar Iran on January 23. Around 8,000 fatalities were caused directly from the magnitude 7.3 earthquake. An indefinite number of aftershocks continued for six months after the main shock. The section on this fault ruptured was the same as the main rupture zone of the 2006 Borujerd earthquake.
The 2008 Qeshm earthquake occurred on 10 September in the Hormozgān Province of southern Iran, 850 kilometres (528 mi) south of Tehran. Its epicenter was near the port city of Bandar Abbas, where an earthquake two years prior had caused damage. The earthquake measured 5.9 on the moment magnitude scale and 6 on the surface wave scale, killing seven people and injuring up to 45. Causing both catastrophic and minor damage, the earthquake devastated up to 200 villages throughout southern Iran, but left the port city of Bandar Abbas almost unscathed. Citizens reportedly panicked when the earthquake hit, emptying into the parks of the city and other open areas.
The Damghan earthquake or the Qumis earthquake occurred on 22 December 856. The earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 7.9, and a maximum intensity of X (Extreme) on the Mercalli intensity scale. The meizoseismal area extended for about 350 kilometres (220 mi) along the southern edge of the eastern Alborz mountains of present-day Iran including parts of Tabaristan and Gorgan. The earthquake's epicenter is estimated to be close to the city of Damghan, which was then the capital of the Persian province of Qumis. It caused approximately 200,000 deaths and is listed by the United States Geological Survey as the sixth deadliest earthquake in recorded history. This death toll has been debated.
The 1968 Borrego Mountain earthquake occurred on April 8, at 18:28 PST in the geologically active Salton Trough of Southern California. The Salton Trough represents a pull-apart basin formed by movements along major faults. This region is dominated by major strike-slip faults one of them being the San Jacinto Fault which produced the 1968 earthquake. The mainshock's epicenter was near the unincorporated community of Ocotillo Wells in San Diego County. The moment magnitude (Mw ) 6.6 strike-slip earthquake struck with a focal depth of 11.1 km (6.9 mi). The zone of surface rupture was assigned a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity (MMI) of VII.
The 1902 Turkestan earthquake devastated Xinjiang, China, near the Kyrgyzstan border. It occurred on August 22, 1902, at 03:00:22 with an epicenter in the Tien Shan mountains. The thrust earthquake measured 7.7 on the moment magnitude scale (Mw ) and had a depth of 18 km (11 mi).
The 1986 Kalamata earthquake struck the southern Peloponnese Region of Greece on September 13 at 20:24 local time. The 12.5 km (7.8 mi) deep moment magnitude (Mw ) 5.9 earthquake had an epicenter near the coastal city of Kalamata and was assigned X (Extreme) on the Mercalli intensity scale. The earthquake was the result of normal faulting along a northwest-dipping fault and produced surface ruptures. Extensive damage was reported in Kalamata and Elaiochori. At least 20 people died and 330 were injured. Survivors sought refuge at campsites and reconstruction work lasted five years.
An earthquake occurred off the coast of the Alaska Peninsula on July 28, 2021, at 10:15 p.m. local time. The large megathrust earthquake had a moment magnitude of 8.2 according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). A tsunami warning was issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) but later cancelled. The mainshock was followed by a number of aftershocks, including three that were of magnitude 5.9, 6.1 and 6.9 respectively.
The 1979 Ghaenat earthquakes were a series of large earthquakes in Qaen County, Khorasan province, northeast Iran, near the Afghanistan border. The first mainshock, known as the Korizan earthquake with a surface-wave magnitude (Ms ) of 6.6 and moment magnitude (Mw ) of 6.8, struck on November 14, while the Ms 7.1 or Mw 7.2 Koli-Boniabad earthquake struck on November 27. The two mainshocks were assigned a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe) and X (Extreme), respectively. The earthquakes caused extensive damage throughout northeastern Iran, killing an estimated 297 to 440 people and left at least 279 injured.
The city of Kashan in Iran was struck by a major earthquake just before dawn on 15 December 1778. The earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 6.2 Ms. There was widespread damage in the area around the city, with most buildings destroyed. More than 8,000 people were killed.
The 1997 Bojnurd earthquake occurred on 4 February at 14:07 IRST in Iran. The epicenter of the Mw 6.5 earthquake was in the Kopet Dag mountains of North Khorasan, near the Iran–Turkmenistan border, about 579 km (360 mi) northeast of Tehran. The earthquake is characterized by shallow strike-slip faulting in a zone of active faults. Seismic activity is present as the Kopet Dag is actively accommodating tectonics through faulting. The earthquake left 88 dead, 1,948 injured, and affected 173 villages, including four which were destroyed. Damage also occurred in Shirvan and Bojnord counties. The total cost of damage was estimated to be over US$ 30 million.
The 1641 Tabriz earthquake occurred on the night of 5 February in present-day East Azerbaijan province, Iran. The earthquake had an estimated surface-wave magnitude of 6.8 and an epicenter between Lake Urmia and the city of Tabriz. It was one of the most destructive earthquakes in the region, resulting in the loss of up to 30,000 lives.
The 1977 Bob–Tangol earthquake struck Kerman province of Iran on December 20, 1977, at 03:04 Iran Standard Time. The earthquake measured Mw 5.9 and struck at a depth of 22.7 km (14.1 mi). A maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VII was evaluated based on damage. It had a strike-slip focal mechanism, which was unusual as the source structure was a thrust fault. It was part of a sequence of strong earthquakes along the 400 km (250 mi) Kuh Banan Fault. Between 584 and 665 people perished while a further 500–1,000 were injured; thousands were also made homeless. Casualties from the earthquake was considered moderate due to the sparsely populated area it affected. Preceded by foreshocks the month before, many residents became wary of a larger earthquake and took refuge outside their homes, contributing to the moderate death toll. However, there were none immediately before the mainshock so many were still in their homes when it struck. Aftershocks were felt for several months, some causing additional damage.

The earthquake measuring 6.0 Mw occurred at a depth of 15 km (9.3 mi) and had a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe). More than 2,100 homes were destroyed and at least 348 people died.
The 1977 Khurgu earthquake struck southern Iran near Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province on the morning of March 22. The earthquake measuring moment magnitude (Mw ) 6.7 struck at a depth of 12.5 km (7.8 mi). Thirty five villages were heavily damaged including over 20 which were destroyed. There were 152–167 people killed and 556 injured.
The 1957 Alborz earthquake struck northern Iran's Mazandaran province at 04:12 local time on 2 July. It had a moment magnitude (Mw ) of 7.1 and occurred at a focal depth of 15 km (9.3 mi). The thrust-faulting shock was assigned a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). It devastated 120 villages in the Alborz Mountains and caused an estimated 1,500 fatalities. The earthquake also triggered landslides including one that dammed the Haraz River. Some damage was also reported in Tehran, Qaem Shahr and Sari. The total damage was estimated at US$25 million.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the seismically active Zagros Mountains. The mountain range was also the location for several historic earthquakes. The earthquake occurred near two segments of the active strike-slip Main Recent Fault. At least 1,130 people died, including over 700 in the village of Farsinaj. Additional deaths also occurred in Dehasiyab, Sarab, and other villages. The earthquake left an estimated 15,000 homeless; poor weather conditions including a winter storm on 21 December killed another 20 people. Several deadly and damaging aftershocks in that month killed a total of 38 people.
The 1947 Dustabad earthquake, also known as the Charmeh earthquake, occurred in South Khorasan province of northeastern Iran on 23 September. The mainshock had a magnitude of Mw 6.9 and maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe). It was accompanied by a Mw 6.1 aftershock on 26 September. These earthquakes killed an estimated 500 people.
