The 2021 Hormozgan earthquakes was a doublet earthquake event in Iran that occurred on November 14, 2021 with magnitudes of 6.0 and 6.4 on the moment magnitude scale. The two quakes occurred just a minute and a half apart, [5] [2] killing 2 people and injuring a further 100. [6] [7]

Tectonic setting

Bandar Abbas lies at the southern margin of the collision zone between the Eurasian Plate and the Arabian Plate. This collision has created the well known Zagros Mountains and the Iranian Plateau. The main fault system that runs through the Zagros Range is the Zagros fold and thrust belt, which has caused many destructive earthquakes in Iran over the years. [8]

The first quake was initially measured at magnitude 6.1, but was later revised to 6.0 by the United States Geological Survey. A minute and a half later, the second quake happened. It was initially measured at magnitude 6.4 by the Iranian Seismological Center but was revised to 6.3 later. This event is considered a doublet earthquake because there were two earthquakes of similar size occurring in the same area a short time apart. The second earthquake had an intensity of IX (Violent) on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale. [5] [2] The quakes were felt as far away as Dubai as well, however not much damage was caused there due to the low intensity of shaking in the area. [9]

Impact

The earthquake triggered a landslide in the mountains of the Geno Biosphere Reserve in the Hormozgan Province. [9] Two people were killed; one by a falling utility pole, and the other died while running from his home. [6] [10] A total of 98 people were injured mostly due to widespread panic and some were injured from falling debris. [11] [7]

The total cost of damage is estimated at 700 trillion Iranian tomans ($US 165 million). [12] In the city of Fin in Bandar Abbas County, roughly 2,125 structures were destroyed and 1,025 damaged. [13] An official said that the worst damages were in the villages Gishan Gharbi, Ab Shirin and Rudshour. [14]

Hormozgan Province is one of the 31 provinces of Iran. It is in the south of the country, in Iran's Region 2, facing Oman, UAE and the Hormuz Straits. Sayeh Khvosh is a village in Dezhgan Rural District, in the Central District of Bandar Lengeh County, Hormozgan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 1,101, across 250 families. Estimates in 2022 were around 300 people.

Kukherdharang is a city in Kukherdharang District, Bastak County, Hormozgan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 3634, in 896 families.

The 2013–14 Azadegan League was the 23rd season of the Azadegan League and 13th as the second highest division since its establishment in 1991. The season featured 17 teams from the 2012–13 Azadegan League, four new teams relegated from the 2012–13 Persian Gulf Cup: Aluminium Hormozgan, Sanat Naft, Paykan and Gahar Zagros and four new teams promoted from the 2012–13 2nd Division: Naft va Gaz Gachsaran and Siah Jamegan both as champions and Sanaye Giti Pasand and Albadr Bandar Kong. Padideh replaced Mes Sarcheshmeh. The league started on 22 September 2013 and ended on 8 April 2014. Padideh won the Azadegan League title for the first time in their history. Padideh, Naft Masjed Soleyman and Paykan promoted to the Persian Gulf Pro League.

Order of Service is an Iranian state general order. For the first time, it was established and awarded during the Pahlavi dynasty and during the reign of Reza Shah. After Iranian Revolution it was re-established by "Council of Iran Ministers" in November 21, 1990. The order has three classes. According to Article 12 of the Regulations on the Awarding of Government Orders of Iran, the Order of Service awarded by President of Iran to recognize "achieving distinguished success" in one of the following:

Mostafa Faghihi is an Iranian reformist journalist. He has also been the former editor-in-chief and current owner of Entekhab and media consultant to Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. The 2022 Hormozgan earthquakes were a pair of doublet earthquakes that struck southern Iran on 1 July, 2022. The earthquakes, which occurred around two hours apart, killed seven people and injured dozens more.

The 1977 Khurgu earthquake struck southern Iran near Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province on the morning of March 22. The earthquake measuring moment magnitude (Mw ) 6.7 struck at a depth of 12.5 km (7.8 mi). Thirty five villages were heavily damaged including over 20 which were destroyed. There were 152–167 people killed and 556 injured.

On September 5, 2022, a reverse faulting earthquake with a moderate magnitude of 5.1 struck Kunar Province, Afghanistan, close to the city of Jalalabad.

Starting on September 21, 2022, and progressing into 2023, an earthquake swarm occurred in the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan, close to the city of Khoy near the Turkish border. Due to mainly three events, a total of 3,880 buildings were destroyed and 52,301 others were damaged in Khoy, including nearly 1,000 schools. Three people died and over 3,310 others were injured, almost all of them due to panic and only a few from collapsed houses.
