The 2013 season was Sarpsborg 08's 2nd season in Tippeligaen, following their promotion back to the top level in 2012. It was also their first season with Brian Deane as the club's manager. Sarpsborg 08 competed in the Tippeligaen, finishing 14th, entering the Relegation play-offs in which they defeated Ranheim 3-0 over two legs. They also competed in the cup where they reached the Second Round, losing to Kvik Halden of the 2. divisjon.

The 2010 Tippeligaen was the 66th completed season of top division football in Norway. The competition began on 14 March and ended on 7 November. Rosenborg was the defending champions, having secured their twenty-first league championship in 2009. Haugesund, Hønefoss and Kongsvinger entered as the three promoted teams from the 2009 1. divisjon. They replaced Fredrikstad, Bodø/Glimt and Lyn who were relegated to the 2010 1. divisjon.
The 2012 season was Brann's 26th consecutive year in Tippeligaen, It was Rune Skarsfjord's second full season as the club's manager. Brann competed in the Tippeligaen, finishing 6th, and the 2012 Norwegian Football Cup where they were knocked out by eventual winners IL Hødd at the semi-final stage.

They also played in the 2013–14 UEFA Europa League, reaching the Group Stage before finishing bottom behind Tottenham Hotspur, Anzhi Makhachkala and Sheriff Tiraspol. It was their first season under the management of Agnar Christensen, but he was replaced by Steinar Nilsen on 1 October 2013.

In the cup they were knocked out by 2. divisjon side Asker and they were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League by Jablonec in the 3rd qualifying round after beating Debreceni in the 2nd round.

The 2013 season was Rosenborg's 23rd consecutive year in Tippeligaen, their 46th season in the top flight of Norwegian football and first season with Per Joar Hansen as manager. They participated in the Tippeligaen, finishing second, the Cup and the 2013–14 UEFA Europa League, entering at the First qualifying round stage and reaching the Second qualifying round before an aggregate defeat to St Johnstone.
The 2013 season was Viking's first full season with Kjell Jonevret as manager. They finished 5th in the Tippeligaen and were knocked out of the cup by Adeccoligaen side Bryne in the Third Round.

The 2013 season was FK Haugesund's 4th season back in the Tippeligaen since their promotion in 2009 and their fifth season with Jostein Grindhaug as manager. They participated in the Tippeligaen finishing third, qualifying for the first qualifying round of the 2014–15 UEFA Europa League. They also reached the Semi-finals of the Cup, where they lost to Rosenborg.
