The race, originally scheduled for 20 laps, was shortened to 19 laps after the start was delayed by 20 minutes due to torrential rain.

The race, originally scheduled for 18 laps, was red-flagged on lap 15 after Maria Herrera crashed into the back of Livio Loi in Turn 15. Since two thirds of the original distance required to award full points was completed, the race was not restarted. Maria Herrera was not classified in the final results since she failed to recover her bike into pit-lane within five minutes of the race being red-flagged (as required by the rules).

The Malaysian motorcycle Grand Prix is a round of the FIM Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Championship. The event is due to take place at the Sepang International Circuit until at least 2024.
The 2008 Malaysian motorcycle Grand Prix was the penultimate round of the 2008 MotoGP Championship. It took place on the weekend of 17–19 October 2008 at the Sepang International Circuit.
The 2006 Malaysian motorcycle Grand Prix was the thirteenth round of the 2006 MotoGP Championship. It took place on the weekend of 8–10 September 2006 at the Sepang International Circuit.
The 2009 Australian motorcycle Grand Prix was the fifteenth round of the 2009 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 16–18 October 2009 at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. Ducati rider Casey Stoner won the grand prix, in his home race. Championship leader Valentino Rossi finished second, further increasing his championship lead over rival Jorge Lorenzo, who crashed out and failed to score any points. This also marked the final Grand Prix win in the career of Marco Simoncelli before his death 2 years later on 23 October 2011 at the 2011 Malaysian motorcycle Grand Prix after suffering a fatal crash in Race.
The 2009 Malaysian motorcycle Grand Prix was the sixteenth round of the 2009 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 23–25 October 2009 at the Sepang International Circuit. In wet conditions the race was dominated by Casey Stoner in a return to form following a mystery illness which ended his hopes of regaining the world championship title. Valentino Rossi finished third, which clinched the 2009 MotoGP championship for him.

It took place on the weekend of 21–23 October 2011 at the Sepang International Circuit, but the MotoGP race was red-flagged and subsequently cancelled after two laps due to a serious accident involving Marco Simoncelli. Simoncelli fell while running fourth, his bike and body veering across the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi. Simoncelli was fatally struck in the head and chest by the two bikes. He was taken straight to the circuit's medical centre, but died of his injuries shortly thereafter.

This race marks Rossi's first bike failure since the 2007 San Marino Grand Prix.
