As the defending Supporters Shield winners, FC Cincinnati were set to enter the U.S. Open Cup in the Round of 32. However, due to participation in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup, neither the first team nor the MLS Next Pro team will compete in the tournament following the deal reached on March 1, 2024 between MLS and US Soccer. The 2019 FC Cincinnati season was the club's debut season in Major League Soccer (MLS), and the fourth season of a team playing under the FC Cincinnati brand after three years in the lower-division United Soccer League. The club finished with a league worst 6–22–6 record in their inaugural MLS season, setting a league record for the most goals given up with 75. FC Cincinnati missed the playoffs.
FC Cincinnati is an American professional soccer club based in Cincinnati. The club plays in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS). The team was first announced on August 12, 2015 as a United Soccer League (USL) franchise which played from 2016 to 2018. On May 29, 2018, the club's ownership was awarded an MLS franchise, and the team began MLS play on March 2, 2019. The club's ownership group is led by Carl Lindner III with Jeff Berding serving as co-CEO. Currently, the role of general manager is held by Chris Albright.
The 2020 Inter Miami CF season was the first season in the history of Inter Miami CF and the 17th season of first-division club soccer in South Florida. It was the first time since 2001 that a South Florida club competed in the first-division. In addition to playing in Major League Soccer, the club was scheduled to participate in the U.S. Open Cup but the competition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2020 FC Cincinnati season was the club's second season in MLS, and the fifth season of a team playing under the FC Cincinnati brand after three years in the lower-division USL Championship. The club finished with a league worst 6–22–6 record in their inaugural MLS season in 2019, setting a league record for the most goals given up with 75. The 2020 season was the final year that FC Cincinnati played home matches at Nippert Stadium, as their new West End Stadium is scheduled to open in March 2021.

Columbus were also set to compete in the U.S. Open Cup, before its cancelation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The season covers the period from November 11, 2019 to the start of the 2021 Major League Soccer season.
The 2020 Minnesota United FC season was the eleventh season of Minnesota United FC's existence and their fourth season in Major League Soccer, the top-tier of American soccer. United plays at Allianz Field and is coached by Adrian Heath. Outside of MLS, Minnesota United were also scheduled to participate in the 2020 U.S. Open Cup and the 2020 Leagues Cup, before their cancelations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as various preseason competitions.

The 2021 Club de Foot Montréal season was the club's 28th season of existence, and their tenth in Major League Soccer, the top tier of the American soccer pyramid. This was the first season under the club's new name, being known as the Montreal Impact up until this point.

The 2022 Philadelphia Union season was the club's thirteenth season in Major League Soccer, the top flight of American soccer. The team is managed by Jim Curtin, his ninth season with the club. The club's regular season began on February 26, 2022, and concluded on October 9. Outside of MLS, the Union also competed in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup, entering in the Round of 32.

The 2023 Chicago Fire FC season was the club's 28th year of existence, as well as their 26th in Major League Soccer. On May 8, 2023, the Fire formally fired their head coach Ezra Hendrickson and assistant coach Junior Gonzalez after the club went 2-3-5 through their first ten games. Assistant coach Frank Klopas was named interim coach for the third time in his career, following stints in 2011 and 2021. Notably, the Fire saw their largest turnout in club history on the October 4 match against Inter Miami, selling out Soldier Field with 62,124 in attendance. The Fire would ultimately miss the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season, the second longest streak in MLS history.

The 2023 FC Cincinnati season was the club's fifth season in MLS, and the eighth season overall for the team including their first three years in the lower-division USL Championship. The club entered 2023 on a high note, having notched their first playoff appearance and first playoff win in 2022 after languishing at the bottom of the standings for their first three seasons in MLS. On September 30, FC Cincinnati clinched the Supporters' Shield, the award given to the team that finishes with the most points in the regular season.
