The 2024 Sungai Bakap by-election is an upcoming by-election for the Penang State Legislative Assembly seat of Sungai Bakap that will be held on 6 July 2024. It was called following the death of incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff on 24 May 2024 due to gastritis. [1] [2] [3] Nor Zamri has served as Member of the Penang State Legislative Assembly for Sungai Bakap since 2023. It is the first Penang state by-election since the 2023 Penang state election.

Nomination

On 12 June 2024, Pakatan Harapan (PH) and its component party the People's Justice Party (PKR), representing the government, announced its candidate, Joohari Ariffin, who was making his electoral debut in the election. Throughout the election, Barisan Nasional (BN), one of the major political coalitions working with PH to form the coalition governments at the federal and Penang state levels, actively campaigned for the PH candidate. Three days later on 15 June 2024, Perikatan Nasional (PN) and its component party the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), defending the seat in the election, named Abidin Ismail, who was also contesting in an election for the first time, as its candidate.

He was a member and Division Chief of Nibong Tebal of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), a component party of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.

Maktar bin Haji Shapee is a former Deputy Speaker of the Penang State Legislative Assembly and a former Member of the Penang State Legislative Assembly for Sungai Bakap from 2008 to 2018. He is a member of People's Justice Party (PKR), a component party of Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalitions.

The 2024 Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election was a by-election for the Selangor State Legislative Assembly seat of Kuala Kubu Baharu that was held on 11 May 2024. It was called following the death of incumbent, Lee Kee Hiong on 21 March 2024 of cancer. Lee has served as Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly for Kuala Kubu Baharu, serving since 2013 for three terms. It is the first Selangor state by-election since the 2023 Selangor state election.
