A by-election was held for the Dewan Rakyat parliamentary seat of Teluk Intan on 31 May 2014 following the nomination day on 19 May 2014. [1] [2] The seat was vacated after the death of the incumbent MP, Seah Leong Peng from bladder cancer in Kuala Lumpur on 1 May 2014. [3] Seah was a lawmaker from the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition. [4] In the 2013 general election, he defeated Barisan Nasional(BN) candidate and Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong and an independent candidate by 7,313 votes. [3] [5] [6]

The PR candidate in the by-election was DAP's Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, notable for her status as a rare Malay politician in the DAP. [7] On 17 May 2014, BN announced that it would again field Mah Siew Keong. [8] 60,349 voters were eligible to vote in the by-election. [9]

Results

Mah Siew Keong won the election by a slim majority of 238 votes. [10] [11]

The Sibu by-election, 2010 was a by-election for the seat of Sibu in the Parliament of Malaysia. This is a list of the members of the Dewan Rakyat of the 13th Parliament of Malaysia. The opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat that contested the general elections in 2013 was dissolved after series of disagreements between two main parties, Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS). A new opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan was formed by the DAP, People's Justice Party (PKR) and newly formed party National Trust Party (AMANAH), consisting of ex-PAS members. Several ex-UMNO members have also formed their own party Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU) and have signed an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan to contest the future general election and ensure straight fights against Barisan Nasional. On 20 March 2017 BERSATU officially became a member of Pakatan Harapan.

A by-election was held for the Dewan Rakyat parliamentary seat of Bukit Gelugor on 25 May 2014 following the nomination day on 12 May 2014. The seat fell vacant after the passing of the incumbent MP, Karpal Singh in a motor accident near Kampar, Perak on 17 April 2014. Karpal hailed from the Democratic Action Party, a component party of Pakatan Rakyat. A political and legal veteran, he served in the Parliament since 1978 and as the chairman of the DAP from 2004 until 2014. He won by a majority of 41,778 votes against Barisan Nasional candidate Teh Beng Yeam in the 2013 general election.

Dyana Sofya binti Mohd Daud is a Malaysian lawyer and politician. She is the former political secretary to Democratic Action Party (DAP) veteran leader and Member of Parliament Lim Kit Siang. Dyana is also a columnist for The Malay Mail Online and Sinar Harian, a national Malay-language daily. She has also written a book called Di Sini Bermula which contains her compilation of her articles written for The Malay Mail Online. Following her return from the UK in 2016, Dyana became a partner in Ayub & Co, a legal firm based in Shah Alam, Selangor.
