The 1967 Sabah state election were held between 8 April to 23 April 1967, with nomination day on 8 March 1967. [1] This was the first state election to take place, after Sabah independence from British and subsequently joining Malaysia in 1963.

Sabah Alliance which consists of United Sabah National Organisation (USNO) and Sabah Chinese Association (SCA), won 19 of the 32 seats and gained simple majority to form government. [2] United Pasokmomogun Kadazan Organisation (UPKO), who are in the federal Alliance coalition with USNO and SCA but opposition at state level, won 12 seats, while 1 seat was won by an independent. [3]

Aftermath

Mustapha Harun, the leader of USNO & Sabah Alliance, were sworn in as Chief Minister on 11 May, along with his cabinet ministers from USNO and SCA. [4] He replaces previous CM, SCA leader Peter Lo who lost in the election. [5] This was the start of the 9-year rule of Sabah Alliance led by USNO's Mustapha in Sabah.

UPKO council led by Donald Stephens decided on December that year to dissolve the party, and the remaining UPKO assemblymen and members to join USNO. [6] [7] Stephens himself decided to retire from politics, until forming BERJAYA with several ex-USNO members in 1975.

The 1985 Sabah state election was held between Saturday, 20 April and Sunday, 21 April 1985. This was the fifth state election to take place. Parti Bersatu Sabah won 25 out 48 seats contested, thus forming government with its president Joseph Pairin Kitingan being sworn in as Chief Minister. This election is a milestone in Sabah political history as it marked the first time that a party not part of the nation's ruling coalition Barisan Nasional (BN) formed government. PBS took control of the state from the previous ruling government under Parti Berjaya—a partner of BN, which has been in power since 1976.

The 1994 Sabah state election was held between Friday, 18 February and Saturday, 19 February 1994. Nomination day was 7 February 1994. The election was one of the most controversial election in Sabah's political history. The election was won by the incumbent ruling party Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), winning 25 state electorates against 23 won by the federal government's ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.

Sabah People's United Front or in Malay Parti Bersatu Rakyat Jelata Sabah is more commonly known by its abbreviation BERJAYA, was a political party based in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. BERJAYA was formed by former United Sabah National Organisation (USNO) secretary-general Harris Salleh who was later joined by Fuad Stephens, who served as the first Chief Minister of Sabah as well as president of the United Pasokmomogun Kadazan Organisation (UPKO). Stephens became the fifth Chief Minister after BERJAYA won the 1976 state election in April but died in June the same year, being succeeded by Salleh. The party had been a partner of Barisan Nasional (BN), the then ruling coalition of Malaysia since its inception on 15 July 1975.

The 1981 Sabah state election was held between Monday, 23 March and Saturday, 28 March 1981. This was the fourth state election to take place. The Sabah State Legislative Assembly was dissolved on 21 February 1981, 2 months earlier than the expiry of the Assembly term on 26 April 1981. Candidates nomination took place on 7 April 1981.

The 1976 Sabah state election was held between Monday, 5 April and Saturday, 14 April 1976. This was the third state election to take place, and the first to feature opposition candidates since the first election on 1967, as the second state election on 1971 has all government candidates won uncontested.

The 1971 Sabah state election were to be held in October 1971, after the State Assembly was dissolved on 20 September 1971. This was the second state election to take place.
