The 13th Kelantan state election were held on 5 May 2013. Polling took place in 45 constituencies throughout the Malaysian state of Kelantan, with each electing a State Assemblyman to the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly. The election was conducted by the Malaysian Election Commission. The state election was held concurrently with the 2013 Malaysian general election.
Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), the governing party of the state, won the election with 32 seats. Its Pakatan Rakyat (PR) ally, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), won 1 seat, while the main opposition party of the state Barisan Nasional won the remaining 12 seats.
This election is the only time the DAP-PAS-PKR coalition is referred as Pakatan Rakyat during the Kelantan state election campaign (although each party is contesting using their own name and logo), and also the final Kelantan state election which the three parties works as a coalition; PR splits in 2015 due to disagreements between DAP and PAS.
Nik Aziz Nik Mat the Menteri Besar of Kelantan, announced the dissolution of Kelantan State Assembly on 3 April 2013, 11;55pm (Malaysia time), after receiving consent from Sultan of Kelantan. [1]
The state assembly were scheduled to be automatically dissolved on 28 April 2013, before the announcement by Nik Aziz.
Barisan Nasional, spearheaded by United Malays National Organization (UMNO), were targeting to win 23 seats to wrestle back the state control from PAS. [2] BN announced its candidate for all 45 state seats on 15 April 2013, lead by its state chief Mustapa Mohamed who is contesting in Ayer Lanas. [3] [4]
PAS, together with PKR, unveiled its candidate for all state seats on 17 April 2013. [5] PAS who have governed the state for the last 23 years uninterrupted, were led by Nik Aziz Nik Mat, PAS Spiritual Leader, PAS Kelantan state commissioner, and the Menteri Besar since 1990. Democratic Action Party (DAP), the other party in the PR bloc, is not participating in the state election due to perceived negative view of the party from the state's voters. [6]

BN launched its manifesto for Kelantan titled 'Rakyat Dihati, Janji Ditepati' (People at Heart, Promises Kept) on 11 April 2013 by the BN Kelantan leader, Mustapa Mohamed. [7]
PAS meanwhile launched its manifesto titled 'Keberkatan, Kemakmuran dan Kebajikan' (Blessings, Prosperity and Welfare) on 23 April 2013. [8]

Ahmad Yakob, MLA for Pasir Pekan and the Deputy State Commissioner of PAS Kelantan, were sworn in as the new Menteri Besar of Kelantan on 6 May 2013, replacing Nik Aziz Nik Mat who has held the position since 1990. [9] The appointment of Ahmad Yakob were agreed by the PAS leadership as requested by Nik Aziz, who stepped down because of health issues. [10] Nik Aziz later died in 2015, and 2015 Chempaka by-election were held, which PAS won.
2014 Pengkalan Kubor by-election were held after the death of its assemblymen. BN retained the seat after it won the by election. In 2017, BN loses the Nenggiri seat after a voting to declare the seat vacant by the State Assembly, due to bankruptcy of its BN assemblymen. However no by-elections were held as there is less than 2 years before the expiry of the current assembly. [11]
In 2015, the PR coalition was disbanded, due to disagreements between PAS and DAP over the former's insistence to implement the Islamic penal code, known as hudud , in Kelantan. [12] Also in 2015, a group of progressives in PAS led by Mohamad Sabu exits the party after losing in the party election, later forming National Trust Party (Amanah). Amanah joined forces with DAP and PKR in forming a successor coalition to PR, later known as Pakatan Harapan (PH) after Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), a splinter party of UMNO dissidents, joined the coalition in 2017. [13] The state government were not affected by the split, as PAS holds the majority and only one MLA for PKR switched to the opposition, though later MLA for Salor Husam Musa joined Amanah after being sacked by PAS in 2016. Datuk Husam bin Musa is a Malaysian politician who served as Vice-President of the National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, who is currently leading the federal government and Senator from September 2018 to September 2021.
Dato' Seri Ir. Mohammad Nizar bin Jamaluddin is a Malaysian politician and engineer who has served as a member of the Perak State Executive Council since November 2022 under Saarani Mohamad and from May 2018 to March 2020 under Ahmad Faizal Azumu, and as a member of the Perak State Legislative Assembly for Sungai Rapat since May 2018. He previously served as the 10th Menteri Besar of Perak from March 2008 to the collapse of his administration in February 2009, represented Changkat Jering from May 2013 to May 2018 and Pasir Panjang from March 2008 to May 2013 in the legislative assembly, and represented Bukit Gantang in the Dewan Rakyat from April 2009 to May 2013.
Kamarudin bin Jaffar is a Malaysian politician who served as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for the second term in the Barisan Nasional (BN) administration under former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former Minister Saifuddin Abdullah from August 2021 to the collapse of the BN administration in November 2022 and the first term in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration under former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former Minister Hishammudin Hussein from March 2020 to the collapse of the PN administration in August 2021, Member of Parliament (MP) for Bandar Tun Razak from May 2018 to November 2022, Deputy Minister of Transport in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and former Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook from July 2018 to the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020 and MP for Tumpat from November 1999 to May 2018. He is a member of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU), a component party of the PN coalition and was a member of the People's Justice Party (PKR), a component party of the PH coalition, Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), a former component party of the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) and Barisan Alternatif (BA) coalitions and United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), a component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition.
The tenth Sarawak state election was held on Saturday, 16 April 2011 after nomination for candidates on Wednesday, 6 April 2011. The purpose of the election was to elect 71 representatives to the Sarawak State Assembly. The ninth state assembly was dissolved by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng on the advice of Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud on 21 March 2011. The previous state election in Sarawak was held in 2006.
The 2013 Sabah state election was held on Sunday, 5 May 2013 concurrently with the 13th Malaysian general election. 60 state seats were contested to elect the state legislature in the Malaysian state of Sabah. This was the 12th state election in Sabah. The state legislative assembly was dissolved on 3 April 2013 following the announcement by Najib Razak to dissolve the federal Parliament earlier on the same day. Sabahans would also elect 25 representatives to the federal legislature which would be covered as part of the general election.

He is a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), a component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition and was a member as well as State Secretary of Kelantan of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), a component party of the PN and formerly GS and PR coalitions.
