The Sanglang seat won by Abdullah Hassan (BN) during the election was declared vacant by the Perlis Election Court in June 2008 on grounds of error during the ballot counting process. In September, Hashim Jasin (PAS) was declared the rightful winner of the seat. [2]

Perlis, also known by its honorific title Perlis Indera Kayangan, is a state of Malaysia in the northwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is the smallest state in Malaysia by means of area and population, as well as the northernmost in the country. Mohd Radzi bin Sheikh Ahmad is a Malaysian former footballer, lawyer, and politician. He was the member of Parliament (MP) of Malaysia for the seat of Kangar in Perlis twice and has served as a senator in Dewan Negara. He was also the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Legal Affairs (2004-2006) and for Home Affairs (2006-2008). Presently, he is a member of Malaysian United Indigenous Party or Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (BERSATU), a component of Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, after his resignation from United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) of Barisan Nasional (BN) for the second time in 2018.

General elections were held in Malaysia on Saturday, 8 March 2008. Voting took place in all 222 parliamentary constituencies of Malaysia, each electing one Member of Parliament to the Dewan Rakyat, the dominant house of Parliament. State elections also took place in 505 state constituencies in 12 of the 13 states on the same day.

Ismail bin Kassim was a Malaysian politician who served as Member of the Perlis State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Tambun Tulang from May 2013 to November 2022, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Arau from March 2008 to May 2013 and the Senator from 1999 to 2005. He was a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), a component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition and the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU), a component party of the formerly the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition and was also younger brother of Shahidan Kassim, the MP for Arau.

Mujahid bin Yusof Rawa, is a Malaysian politician who has served as Senator since May 2023. He served as the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Religious Affairs in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad from July 2018 to the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020 as well as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Parit Buntar from March 2008 to November 2022. He is a member of the National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of the PH coalition and was a member of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), a former component party of the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition. He has also served as the 2nd Deputy President of AMANAH since December 2023 and State Chairman of PH of Perak since June 2021.

Dato' Seri Azlan bin Man is a Malaysian politician and diplomat who served as the 9th Menteri Besar of Perlis from May 2013 and Member of the Perlis State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Bintong from May 2018 to November 2022. He also served as the MLA for Pauh from May 2013 to May 2018. He is a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), a component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. He also served as the State Chairman of BN of Perlis from April 2021 to April 2023 and of UMNO of Perlis from April 2021 to March 2023.

Hashim bin Jasin is a Malaysian politician from the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), a component party of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. He has served as the 4th Spiritual Leader of PAS since October 2016 after the death of his predecessor Haron Din in September 2016 and its State Commissioner of Perlis from 1991 to 2013. Besides, he served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Arau after his victory in the 1998 Arau by-elections until the 1999 general election in November 1999 and Member of the Perlis State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Sanglang from November 1999 to the 2013 General election in May 2013.

The 14th Perlis State election was held on 9 May 2018. The previous state election was held on 5 May 2013. The state assemblymen is elected to 5 years term each.
