2011 Merlimau by-election

The Merlimau state by-election is a state by-election that was scheduled to be held on 6 March 2011 in the state of Malacca, Malaysia. The nomination of candidates was scheduled on 26 February 2011. The Merlimau seat fell vacant following the death of its state assemblyman Datuk Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hasaan of United Malays National Organisation from a heart attack at the Putra Specialist Hospital in Malacca. [1] [2] Previously Mohamad Hidhir won the Merlimau seat with a 2,154 vote majority, beating PAS' Jasme Tompang at the 2008 Malaysian general elections. [3] The state assembly seat has around 10,400 voters, comprising mainly 64% Malays, 21% Chinese and 14% Indians. [4] For the by-election PAS picked as its candidate, Yuhaizad Abdullah while Barisan Nasional picked Roslan Ahmad. [5]

Politically, it is situated in the parliament constituency of P139 Jasin, and state constituency of N27 Merlimau, which consists of seven ballot box areas, namely Ayer Merbau, Chincin, Jasin Lalang, Merlimau Utara, Merlimau Pasir, Permatang Serai, and Pengkalan Samak.

The 2007 Machap by-election was held on 12 April 2007. The seat in the state assembly of Malacca, Malaysia, fell vacant after the incumbent, Datuk Wira Poh Ah Tiam of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), died on 15 March that year. On 21 March 2007, the Election Commission of Malaysia (EC) announced 3 April 2007 as the nomination day and 12 April 2007 the election date. The MCA candidate, Lai Meng Chong eventually defeated the opposition candidate of Liou Chen Kuang, with a reduced majority compared to the previous 2004 election.

Azizan bin Abdul Razak was a Malaysian politician who served as the 10th Menteri Besar of the state of Kedah from 2008 to 2013. A member of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), he was the first Chief Minister of Kedah from a party other than the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). He held the seat of Sungai Limau in the Kedah state assembly from 2004 until his death in 2013. He was also the state commissioner for PAS in Kedah and a member of the central committee of the national party.

Mujahid bin Yusof Rawa, is a Malaysian politician who has served as Senator since May 2023. The Galas by-election was an election for the Galas seat in the Kelantan state legislative assembly to replace the incumbent, who died in office. Polling was held on 4 November 2010. Nominations were held on 26 October 2010. The Galas state seat fell vacant following the death of assemblyman Che Hashim Sulaiman on 27 September due to cancer. Previously, PAS won the seat during the 2008 General Election by a 646-vote majority over Barisan Nasional's Saufi Deraman. A total 11,553 registered voters were eligible to vote in this by-election, including 127 postal voters. The electorate is made of 61.63% Malays, 20.08% Chinese, 16.37% Orang Asli, 1.6% Indians, 0.09% others. Barisan Nasional's candidate won the by-election.

The Kerdau state by-election is a state by-election that was scheduled held on 6 March 2011 in the state of Pahang, Malaysia. The nomination of candidates was done on 26 February 2011. The Kerdau seat fell vacant following the death of its state assemblyman Datuk Zaharuddin Abu Kassim of United Malays National Organisation, part of the Barisan Nasional coalition from a heart attack at his home. Previously Zaharuddin Abu Kassim won the Kerdau seat with a 1,615 vote majority, beating PAS' Hassanuddin Salim at the 2008 Malaysian general elections. The state assembly seat has 8,721 voters registered compromising of 88.36% Malays, 3.6% Chinese, 3.4% Indians and 2.98% other races. For the by-election PAS picked as its candidate, Hassanuddin Salim while Barisan Nasional picked Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad.

Anifah was the former Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2009 to 2018 and formerly a member of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) part of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition until he left to become independent, despite the fact that he had been a 4-term MP for Kimanis since 2004 and had just retained the seat under BN in the 2018 election a few months prior.
