The 2024 Mahkota by-election was a by-election for the Johor State Legislative Assembly seat of Mahkota that was held on 28 September 2024. It was called following the death of incumbent, Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on 2 August 2024 from internal bleeding. [1] [2] [3] Sharifah Azizah served as Member of the Johor State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Penawar from 2018 to 2022 and for Mahkota from 2022.
Barisan Nasional's Syed Hussein Syed Abdullah defeated Perikatan Nasional's Mohamad Haizan Jaafar in a landslide, winning by a majority of 20,648 votes, leading in all polling districts, as well as early and postal votes. [4] [5]
On 17 August 2024, Pakatan Harapan (PH) Secretary-General Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed that PH would not field a candidate, and instead giving way to Barisan Nasional (BN). [6] On 7 September 2024, BN nominated Kluang UMNO Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah as its candidate. [7] On 10 September 2024, Perikatan Nasional (PN) nominated former Johor FA footballer and former Kluang football head coach Mohamad Haizan Jaafar as its candidate. [8]
On Nomination Day, the race was confirmed to be a straight fight between Syed Hussein of BN and Mohamad Haizan of PN after nominations closed. [9]

The National Front, officially Barisan Nasional (BN), is a political coalition of Malaysia that was founded in 1974 as a coalition of centre-right and right-wing political parties to succeed the Alliance Party. Datuk Nur Jazlan bin Tan Sri Mohamed is a Malaysian politician who has served as the 15th Deputy President of the Dewan Negara and Senator since June 2023. The prospect of snap elections had been considered high due to the political crisis that had been ongoing since 2020; political instability caused by coalition or party switching among members of Parliament, combined with the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, contributed to the resignation of two prime ministers and the collapse of each of their respective coalition governments since the 2018 general elections.

The National Alliance, officially Perikatan Nasional (PN), is a Malaysian political coalition consisting of right-wing political parties. Previously known as the Persatuan Perikatan Parti Malaysia. It is the second largest political coalition in Dewan Rakyat with 74 seats after Pakatan Harapan (PH) with 81 seats.
The National Concord was a Malaysian political coalition that was formed between the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) and United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) against the then-ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition which had come into power after the 2018 Malaysian general election (GE14). The political cooperation between the two largest Malay/Muslim-based parties was officialised with the signing of the Piagam Muafakat Nasional. A by-election was held on 29 August 2020 for the seat of Slim in the Perak State Legislative Assembly. The seat fell vacant following the sudden death of the incumbent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, Mohd. Khusairi Abdul Talib, 59, due to a heart attack on 15 July 2020. He had held the seat for four terms since 2004.
Muhammad Taqiuddin bin Cheman is a Malaysian politician who served as Member of the Johor State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Pulai Sebatang from May 2018 to March 2022. He is a member of the National Trust Party (AMANAH), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. He also served as the Deputy Youth Chief of AMANAH from July 2020 to December 2023 and the Director of Youth Election Bureau and State Youth Chief of AMANAH and PH of Johor. He is the son of Cheman Yusoh of Perikatan Nasional (PN), who contested in the 2018 Johor state election for the Sungai Balang state seat.
Sharifah Azizah binti Syed Zain was a Malaysian politician who served as Member of the Johor State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Penawar from May 2018 to March 2022 and for Mahkota from March 2022 to her death in August 2024. She was the Women Division chief of Kluang of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), a component party of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. Sharifah Azizah died from internal bleeding in Kluang, Johor, on 2 August 2024, at the age of 63. A by-election was held on 28 September 2024, Syed Hussein Syed Abdullah of BN was elected as the new Mahkota MLA.
