The 2025 AFL Grand Final is an upcoming Australian rules football match contested between the Geelong Football Club and the Brisbane Lions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday, 27 September 2025. It is to be the 130th annual grand final of the Australian Football League (AFL), staged to determine the premiers of the 2025 AFL season.
Geelong entered the 2025 season after a preliminary final loss to Brisbane in 2024. The Cats finished second on the ladder with a 17–6 record. [2] They defeated Brisbane in the second qualifying final at the MCG, winning 16.16 (112) to 11.8 (74). [3] There they faced Hawthorn, overcoming a strong first quarter from the Hawks before pulling away in the latter stages to advance to the first grand final with a score of 17.13 (115) to Hawthorn 13.7 (85). [4] It was Geelong's first grand final since 2022, when they defeated Sydney by 81 points to claim the premiership. [5]
Brisbane entered 2025 as the reigning premiers, having defeated Sydney in the 2024 grand final. [6] The Lions finished third on the ladder with a 16–6–1 record. [2] After their qualifying final loss to Geelong, they hosted Gold Coast in a QClash semi-final, dominating in a 14.16 (100) to 6.11 (47) victory. [7] They then faced Collingwood in a preliminary final at the MCG; despite a second-quarter surge from the Magpies, the Lions eventually won 15.10 (100) to 11.5 (71) to qualify for their third consecutive grand final. [8]
Geelong were aiming for their 11th VFL/AFL premiership and second in four years, while Brisbane were chasing their fifth and the chance to win consecutive flags for the first time since their 2001–2003 three-peat. The sides had never previously met in a grand final. [9]
The two teams met three times prior to the decider in 2025. Brisbane won both home-and-away encounters, winning 10.10 (70) to 9.7 (61) in round 3 at the Gabba [10] and 14.8 (92) to 6.15 (51) in round 15 at Kardinia Park, [11] before Geelong won the qualifying final. Bookmakers rated the Cats as favourites for the grand final, with odds of $1.49 compared to Brisbane’s $2.63. [12]

In late August 2025, the AFL announced that American rapper Snoop Dogg would headline the pre-game entertainment for the 2025 AFL Grand Final, reportedly for a $2 million fee. [15] The decision sparked a national debate, with criticism directed at the AFL for choosing an international artist over local talent, as well as for selecting a performer with a history of controversial lyrics. [16]
Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young was a vocal critic, telling the Australian Senate that the AFL should be "backing homegrown Aussie talent" and labeling Snoop Dogg a "slur merchant" in reference to his past homophobic and misogynistic lyrics. [17] This criticism was amplified by the timing of the announcement, which came shortly after Adelaide Crows forward Izak Rankine was suspended for using a homophobic slur. [16]
Public opinion was divided, with some fans expressing disappointment that an Australian artist was not chosen for one of the country's biggest cultural events. There were also concerns that Snoop Dogg's performance would not be "family-friendly" and could be met with booing from the MCG crowd. [18]
In response to the backlash, the AFL defended its decision, with CEO Andrew Dillon stating that the pre-game entertainment would be "family-friendly and consistent with the audience at the MCG". [19]
The AFL also later announced that a lineup of Australian artists, including Tash Sultana and Baker Boy, would join Snoop Dogg for the pre-game show. [20]
