24 is the soundtrack album, composed by A. R. Rahman with song lyrics by Vairamuthu and Madhan Karky, to the 2016 Tamil film of the same name, produced by Suriya and directed by Vikram Kumar. The album features six tracks and was released on 9 April 2016 by Eros Music.

Background

In November 2014, A. R. Rahman was announced as the film soundtrack and score composer. [3] Rahman had a six-hour script narration session with Suriya and Vikram Kumar before signing the project. [4] Recording of the track "Punnagaye" written by lyricist Vairamuthu was completed by February 2015. [5] In an interview with The Hindu , Suriya told that the recording of one more track was completed by September 2015. [6] According to lyricist Madhan Karky, for the track "Naan Un": [7] Rahman was trying out a tune on his piano and Karky was writing the lyrics while listening to him. He wrote a line in Tamil, "Undhan Azhagil Iraivanai Kaankiraen" that translates to, "In Your Beauty, I See God." An inspiration before composing tunes, Rahman had read the same line from the Prophetic books before composing that track. [8] However, the track was initially composed for some other film. [8] Later, it was reworked to suit the film soundtrack. [8] An additional composition written by Madhan Karky titled, "Dangerskku Hi5 Podu, Daredevilkku Vaanam Podu." was as an intro song only in the film score. [9] However, the track was released as a bonus single under the title "24 Carat" on 19 May 2016. [10]

Release

The original and Telugu versions of the album were released at separate events held at Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai [4] and Shilpkala Vedika in Hyderabad [4] respectively on 9 April 2016. [4] At the launch of original version of the album, there were live performances of songs from the film. Singer Benny Dayal sang the track "Kaalam En Kadhali", followed by Arijit Singh and Chinmayi singing "Naan Un". Shakthisree Gopalan was next with the track "Aararoo" and the Telugu version "Laalijo" was sung by actress Nithya Menen with A. R. Rahman playing the keyboard. [11] The songs were released a day before the launch on 8 April.[ citation needed ]

Critical response

Gulf News based critic Mythily Ramachandran stated: "A. R. Rahman's music grows on you and is refreshing." [12] Latha Srinivasan of DNA India mentioned: "A. R. Rahman's songs and score add tremendous value to this script as well." [13] Sify quoted: "Rahman's songs are big plus for the film and the maestro scores well in the BGM of Athreya's sequences, especially in the pre-climax portion." [14] Critical review board based at Behindwoods praised the music: "The score in typical A. R. Rahman style sets the mood right for the tale." [15] Mani Prabhu of NDTV Movies called the songs "eye popping" that fits into the entertainment." [16] Anupama Subramaniam of Deccan Chronicle stated: "AR Rahman's background score elevates the proceedings while the songs are already a hit." [17] Subha Shetty Saha of Mid-Day stated that the film has "melodius music" by A. R. Rahman. [18]

Critic S. Saraswathi of Rediff stated: "The beautifully composed songs by Rahman are well picturised, but act as speed breakers to the narrative." [19] Sreedhar Pillai, in his review for Firstpost wrote: "A. R. Rahman's background music is in sync with the theme of the film, though songs are barely hummable". [20] In his review for The Indian Express, Goutham VS writes: "A R Rahman's background score blended perfectly with the scenes, especially when Mani's wonderstruck mind was seeking answers about the mysterious watch, but Rahman seems to have lost his magic when it comes to the songs." [21] For his review to Filmibeat, Avinash Gopinath noted: "AR Rahman's music is not up to the mark. While background score is only average, his songs are made bearable by brilliant visuals." [22]

Baradwaj Rangan, in his review for The Hindu , wrote that the numbers by A. R. Rahman are lead up to only for the film. [23] M. Suganth of The Times of India wrote: "AR Rahman disappoints with a rather serviceable score." [24] Arathi Kanan for the online newspaper Manorama wrote: "Rahman interludes are welcome. However, the routine placement of the songs are boring." [25]

Noted poet-lyricist Vairamuthu and his son Madhan Karky penned lyrics for three songs each. Sri Lankan rapper Aaryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam made his debut for Indian cinema with one of the songs. The album was released under Sony Music on 28 November 2012.

Raanjhanaa is the soundtrack album, composed by A. R. Rahman of the 2013 Hindi film of the same name, directed by Anand L. Rai and starring Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol in the lead roles. The film is produced by Krishika Lulla under the banner Eros International. The lyrics of the original version were written by Irshad Kamil whereas the Tamil lyrics were written by poet Vairamuthu. The soundtrack album features nine original tracks. The music of the original version of the soundtrack was released on the co-branded record labels Sony Music India and Eros Music on 11 June 2013 and the Tamil version on 24 June 2013.

<i>Maryan</i> (soundtrack) 2013 soundtrack album by A. R. Rahman

Maryan is the soundtrack album, composed by A. R. Rahman for the 2013 Tamil film of the same name directed by Bharatbala. The film that is produced under the banner Aascar Films, stars Dhanush and Parvathy in the lead roles. The album was released under the label Sony Music on 17 May 2013. The music received extremely positive critical reception and overwhelming audience response after its release. It also topped the iTunes India charts for the month of May and June 2013. Further, for the remaining months of 2013, it maintained its position in the top 10 music album charts. The soundtrack album was adjudged as "Tamil Album of Year" in iTunes’ Best of 2013. Rahman won the Norway Tamil Film Festival Best Music Director award and the SIIMA Award for Best Music Director in 2014. The soundtrack was nominated at the 2014 Edison Awards and Vijay Awards for both best music direction and best background score. Rahman was also nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Music Director – Tamil but he won the same award for his compositions to Kadal.

<i>Massu Engira Masilamani</i> 2015 film by Venkat Prabhu

Massu Engira Masilamani, also known by its former title Masss, is a 2015 Indian Tamil-language action horror comedy film directed by Venkat Prabhu. The film was produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja under his Studio Green banner alongside his then-newly formed studio Aadnah Arts, and was distributed by Eros International and Dream factory. The film features an ensemble cast including Suriya, Nayanthara, Pranitha Subhash, Premgi, Parthiban and Samuthirakani. Yuvan Shankar Raja composed the film's soundtrack and score, whereas cinematography and editing were handled by R. D. Rajasekhar and Praveen K. L. respectively. In the film Masss, A con artist starts interacting with ghosts when his partner in crime dies in an accident. During one such encounter, he stumbles upon Shakthi, a ghost who wants to seek revenge against his family's killers.

<i>Kaaviya Thalaivan</i> (soundtrack) 2014 soundtrack album by A. R. Rahman

Kaaviya Thalaivan(Epic Hero) is the 2014 soundtrack album to the Tamil historical fiction film of the same name, written and directed by Vasanthabalan. A. R. Rahman has composed the original songs and score for the film. Being a period film, the music of film reflects the sounds during the 1920s pre-Independence Indian era. The album marks poet Vaali's last lyrical work for this A. R. Rahman musical film. Prior to recording the original songs, Rahman carried out a research for six months for the music. Majority of the tracks were recorded by nine months, beginning from October 2012. Every song in the film has an underlying concept that justifies the screenplay. Prior to the album release, three tracks "Vaanga Makka Vaanga", "Yaarumilla" and "Aye Mr. Minor!" were released as singles on 1 September, 1 October and 17 October. The original version of the album that released on 31 October 2014 was aired through Suryan FM.
