Development

The film's soundtrack is composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics written by Irshad Kamil. While Imtiaz Ali has collaborated with Kamil in all his films, it marks his fourth collaboration with Rahman after Rockstar (2011), Highway (2014) and Tamasha (2015). [2]

On the songs, Irshad Kamil said, "The six songs address the inner turmoil of Chamkila the artist. The attempt is to paint a picture of Punjab at the time. What circumstances created Chamkila, how his popularity bred enemies, and so on." [3] A. R. Rahman added, "We sat, discussed and realised we are needed because we could have a take on what Chamkila did, who Chamkila is. Let the characters sing about Chamkila. So, we made it like a Broadway kind of thing. We made certain songs like Broadway musicals for the film." [4]

The leads, Parineeti Chopra and Diljit Dosanjh have sung a total of 15 songs for the film. On this, Chopra stated, "One of the main reasons I did this film was because I was getting to sing some 15 songs for it." [5] [6] Ali revealed that a singing diction teacher named Kittu, trained both Chopra and Dosanjh, before they sang live in the film. Ali further added that Chopra did "intensive practice", as she had to sing on a higher note than Dosanjh. [7]

Release

The soundtrack of the film, was preceded with two singles: "Ishq Mitaye", which was released on 29 February 2024, and "Naram Kaalja", released on 14 March 2024. [8] [9] The remaining songs were released along with the album on 28 March 2024 through digital music platforms. [10] Later, "Tu Kya Jaane" video song was released on 3 April 2024. [11]

Reception

The soundtrack of the film received critical acclaim. Suanshu Khurana of The Indian Express noted, "With the six-song jukebox for Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila — composer AR Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil have managed to conjure the memories of a Punjabi hinterland. Kamil wins with his Hindi-Urdu-Hindustani-Hinglish-Punjabi lyrics that are not just witty, they stick to tough metres set by Rahman and shine while creating a multi-textured portrait of a complicated artiste." [12]

In her five-star review for Koimoi , Trisha Gaur termed "Tu Kya Jaane" her favourite and said, "some album outperforms. The album is an asset to be treasured in your playlists for eternity. AR Rahman's music soothes, and the best part of the album is not remaking any original Chamkila songs. Imtiaz Ali has definitely struck gold with this strategy." [13] Prathyush Parasuraman of Film Companion stated, "For the album, we have songs about and around, not by Chamkila, composed by Rahman and lyrics are penned by Irshad Kamil. And who best to make a myth more mythical, a site of protest more palatable than Ali, Kamil, and Rahman and their gleaming cinema of normcore Sufism." [14]

Suparna Sharma of The Wire stated, "Irshad Kamil has written the lyrics and AR Rahman has composed the music. It is melodious when it needs to be, and energising when required. Long after the film is over, Rahman's beats will continue to play in your head." [15] Bollywood Hungama noted, "A. R. Rahman's music is well woven into the narrative and enhances impact. 'Baaja', played in the beginning, sets the mood. 'Naram Kaalja' is adorable and will surely be talked about. 'Ishq Mitaye' comes next and Mohit Chauhan kills it with his locals. 'Vida Karo' is moving while 'Tu Kya Jaane' is soulful. A R Rahman's background score is terrific." [16] Shomini Sen from WION noted, "While Chamkila's original songs are all there and performed live by the two actors, with Irshad Kamil's lyrics, AR Rahman infuses soulful music as well as forms an important part of storytelling." [17]
