2927 Alamosa, provisional designation 1981 TM, is a stony background asteroid from the central region of the asteroid belt, approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) in diameter. The asteroid was discovered on 5 October 1981, by American astronomer Norman Thomas at Lowell's Anderson Mesa Station in Flagstaff, Arizona. [1] The S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 4.4 hours. [4] It was named after the U.S. town of Alamosa in Colorado. [2]
Alamosa is a non-family asteroid from the main belt's background population. It orbits the Sun in the central asteroid belt at a distance of 2.1–3.0 AU once every 4.03 years (1,471 days; semi-major axis of 2.53 AU). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.17 and an inclination of 17° with respect to the ecliptic. [3] It was first identified as 1936 OA at Heidelberg Observatory in 1936, extending the asteroid's observation arc by 45 years prior to its official discovery observation at Anderson Mesa. [1]
This minor planet was named after the U.S. town of Alamosa, Colorado, located in the San Luis Valley on the upper Rio Grande. The town is the birthplace of the discovering astronomer, Norman Thomas. [2] The official naming citation was published by the Minor Planet Center on 20 December 1983 ( M.P.C. 8405). [10] Almosa is Spanish for cottonwood tree.
Alamosa has been characterized as a common S-type asteroid by Pan-STARRS ' survey, [4] [7] the Small Solar System Objects Spectroscopic Survey (S3OS2), [5] [9] as well as in the SDSS-based taxonomy. [8] In the SMASS-like variant of the S3OS2 taxonomy, Alamosa is a K-type asteroid. [5] [9]
In April and May 2012, a rotational lightcurve was obtained from photometric observations made at the Phillips Academy Observatory ( I12 ). Lightcurve analysis gave a well-defined rotation period of 4.3832±0.0002 hours with a brightness variation of 0.26 in magnitude ( U=3 ). [6] The Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link assumes a standard albedo for stony asteroids of 0.20 and calculates a diameter of 11.8 kilometers with an absolute magnitude of 12.0. [4]
251 Sophia is a stony background asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 4 October 1885, by astronomer Johann Palisa at the Vienna Observatory in Austria. The S-type asteroid (S/L) has a rotation period of 20.2 hours and measures approximately 28 kilometers in diameter. It was named after Sophia von Seeliger, wife of German astronomer Hugo von Seeliger (1849–1924).
746 Marlu is a dark and large background asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 72 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 1 March 1913, by German astronomer Franz Kaiser at the Heidelberg Observatory in southwest Germany. The primitive P-type asteroid has a rotation period of 7.8 hours. It was named after the discoverer's daughter, Marie-Louise Kaiser.
869 Mellena is a dark background asteroid from the central region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 9 May 1917, by astronomer Richard Schorr at the Bergedorf Observatory in Hamburg. The carbonaceous C-type asteroid has a shorter than average rotation period of 6.5 hours and measures approximately 19 kilometers in diameter. It was named after Werner von Melle (1853–1937), mayor of Hamburg, who founded the discovering observatory.
881 Athene is a stony background asteroid from the central region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 22 July 1917, by astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany. The likely elongated S/L-type asteroid has a rotation period of 13.9 hours and measures approximately 12 kilometers in diameter. It was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom in Greek mythology.
891 Gunhild is a large background asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, that measures approximately 58 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 17 May 1918, by astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany. The dark D-type asteroid has a rotation period of 11.9 hours. Any reference of the asteroid's name to a person is unknown.
943 Begonia is a large, carbonaceous background asteroid, approximately 70 kilometers in diameter, from the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg Observatory on 20 October 1920 and given the provisional designations A920 UA and 1920 HX. The dark C-type asteroid (Ch) has a rotation period of 15.7 hours. It was named after the genus of popular houseplants, Begonia.
968 Petunia, is a stony asteroid of the Itha family, approximately 28 kilometers in diameter, located in the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 24 November 1921, by astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg Observatory in southern Germany. The bright S-type asteroid has a long rotation period of 61.3 hours. It was named after the genus of flowering plants, Petunia.
981 Martina is a carbonaceous Themistian asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 31 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 23 September 1917, by Russian astronomer Sergey Belyavsky at the Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean peninsula. The C/B-type asteroid has a rotation period of 11.3 hours. It was named after French historian and revolutionary Henri Martin (1810–1883).
986 Amelia is a large background asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 50 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 19 October 1922, by Spanish astronomer Josep Comas i Solà at the Fabra Observatory in Barcelona. The L/D-type asteroid has a rotation period of 9.5 hours. It was named after the discoverer's wife, Amelia Solà.
5264 Telephus is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 70 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 17 May 1991, by American astronomer couple Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory in California, and later named after King Telephus from Greek mythology. The dark and possibly elongated D-type asteroid belongs to the 50 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 9.5 hours.
3141 Buchar, provisional designation 1984 RH, is a dark Cybele asteroid from the outermost region of the asteroid belt, approximately 36 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 2 September 1984, by Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos at the Kleť Observatory. The D-type asteroid has a rotation period of 11.4 hours. It was named in memory of Czechoslovakian astronomer Emil Buchar.
1759 Kienle, provisional designation 1942 RF, is a stony background asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 7 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 11 September 1942, by astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany. The S-type asteroid has a longer-than average rotation period of 29.3 hours. It was named for German astrophysicist Hans Kienle.
8441 Lapponica, provisional designation 4008 T-3, is a background asteroid from the Florian region of the inner asteroid belt, approximately 4.5 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 16 October 1977, by Ingrid and Cornelis van Houten at Leiden, and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory in California. The L-type asteroid has a rotation period of 3.27 hours. It was named for the Bar-tailed godwit, a shorebird also known by its Latin name Limosa lapponica.
3793 Leonteus is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 90 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 11 October 1985, by American astronomer couple Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory in California, United States. The D-type Jovian asteroid belongs to the 30 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 5.6 hours. It was named after the hero Leonteus from Greek mythology.
5592 Oshima, provisional designation 1990 VB4, is a Veritasian asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 25 kilometers (16 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 14 November 1990, by astronomers Kenzo Suzuki and Takeshi Urata at the Toyota Observatory, and later named after Japanese astronomer Yoshiaki Oshima. The carbonaceous C-type asteroid has a rotation period of 12.5 hours.
1369 Ostanina is a dark and elongated asteroid of the Meliboea family, located in the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 27 August 1935, by Soviet astronomer Pelageya Shajn at the Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean peninsula. The hydrated carbonaceous C-type asteroid has a rotation period of 8.4 hours and measures approximately 42 kilometers in diameter. It was named for the Russian village of Ostanin, birthplace of the discoverer.
6376 Schamp, provisional designation 1987 KD1, is a stony background asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 29 May 1987, by American astronomer couple Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory in California. The S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 6.6 hours. It was named after Larry and Becky Schamp who took care of the Shoemaker family after Eugene's fatal car accident in Australia.
2975 Spahr, provisional designation 1970 AF1, is a bright background asteroid from the Flora region of the inner asteroid belt, approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 8 January 1970, by Russian astronomers Hejno Potter and A. Lokalov at the Cerro El Roble Station near Santiago, Chile. The S- or A-type asteroid has a rotation period of 11.9 hours. It was named for Timothy Spahr, an American astronomer and former director of the Minor Planet Center.
3198 Wallonia, provisional designation 1981 YH1, is a stony asteroid and sizable Mars-crosser from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 7.1 kilometers (4.4 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 30 December 1981, by Belgian astronomer François Dossin at the Haute-Provence Observatory in France. The S/K-type asteroid has a rotation period of 7.5 hours. It was named after the French speaking region of Wallonia in Belgium.
4489 Dracius,, is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 90 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 15 January 1988, by American astronomer Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station of the Lowell Observatory near Flagstaff, Arizona, in the United States. The dark D-type asteroid belongs to the 50 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 12.58 hours. It was named after Dracius from Greek mythology, who was a commander of the Epeans who fought against Hector.
