522 Exhibition West was a streetcar route in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, operated by the Toronto Transit Commission from the 1960s to 1986. [1]

History

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), and the private streetcar companies that preceded it, ran special streetcar service to the CNE from the 19th Century. [1] [2]

The TTC ran a seasonal streetcar service named the 522 Dundas Exhibition, to serve the Canadian National Exhibition. In 1980, this route was officially renamed "Exhibition West," from the former name "Dundas Exhibition." This streetcar route operated on special occasions and events that took place at Exhibition Place, such as the Canadian National Exhibition, and the Molson Indy.

522 operated from Dundas West station, running south on Roncesvalles, east on King Street, south on Dufferin Street, and south towards the Dufferin Gates at Exhibition Place.

The 522 route began service when the TTC opened the Bloor–Danforth subway line in 1966. The TTC discontinued the route in 1986 and replaced it with the 93 Exhibition West route, but reinstated it for one year in 1995, due to the large number of buses required to shuttle passengers on the Spadina line, because of the Russell Hill accident on August 11, 1995. [3]

A similar event-only route, the 521 King Exhibition (now known as the 521 Exhibition East) also only served the CNE during special events.

Resurrection

Unlike the counterpart of this route (521 Exhibition East), 522 was reinstated in 1988, not as a streetcar route, but as 93 Exhibition West, which was also a seasonal service that ran only during the CNE and other special occasions. The 93 was later renamed the 193 Exhibition Rocket on November 23, 2002 as a TTC marketing strategy to brand regular-fare express services as "Rocket" routes. [4]

The 193 buses operated from Dundas West Station, southeast on Dundas Street West, south on Dufferin Street to Springhurst Avenue at Dufferin gate loop. This route operated as a seasonal express service. [5] Though in August 2018, service ended on the 193 during the 2018 CNE, since it was considered redundant since Dufferin station became accessible with elevators. Later that same year, the 929 Dufferin express started running and currently operates from Dufferin gate loop to Dufferin station on Line 2 Bloor-Danforth, then heads north to Wilson station, however the 929 is not a non-stop service.

Dufferin Street is a major north–south street in Toronto, Vaughan and King, Ontario, Canada. It is a concession road, two concessions (4 km) west of Yonge Street. The street starts at Exhibition Place, continues north to Toronto's northern boundary at Steeles Avenue with some discontinuities and continues into Vaughan, where it is designated York Regional Road 53. The street is named for Frederick Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, who served as Governor General of Canada from 1872 to 1878. Accessibility for people with disabilities on the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) system is incomplete but improving. Most of the Toronto subway system was built before wheelchair access was a requirement under the Ontarians with Disabilities Act (ODA). However, all subway stations built since 1996 are equipped with elevators, and elevators have been installed in 44 stations built before 1996. Over 75 percent of Toronto's subway stations are accessible. The original plan was to make all stations accessible by 2025; however, a few stations might not be accessible until 2026.

The Waterfront West LRT (WWLRT) is a proposed streetcar line in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The WWLRT is currently part of a City project called the Waterfront Transit Reset which also includes the East Bayfront LRT. The WWLRT was initially proposed as part of the Transit City plan to expand transit services offered by the Toronto Transit Commission that was announced March 16, 2007. The new line was to use existing parts of the Toronto streetcar system, extending from Union station to Long Branch Loop via Exhibition Place.

The single-ended streetcars require track loops in order to reverse direction. During the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), the loop becomes a primary access point for visitors entering Exhibition Place via the Dufferin Gates. This west entrance to the CNE can be reached by the Dufferin Street bridges across the Lakeshore West railway corridor and Gardiner Expressway.

The Toronto Transit Commission operated the Bloor streetcar line along Bloor Street and Danforth Avenue, extending at its longest from Jane Street in the west end of the city to Luttrell Avenue in the east. Both Luttrell and Jane loops at the termini were transfer points between streetcars and suburban bus routes. The line was abandoned in 1966 with the opening of the Bloor-Danforth subway line, except for two stubs of the line abandoned in 1968.

The Harbord streetcar line was an east-west line within the Toronto streetcar system. The route was named after Harbord Street even though only a small portion of the route was along the namesake street. One distinct characteristic of the route was its zip-zag nature, making many 90-degree turns onto the various streets along its route. The route was retired in 1966 when the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) opened the Bloor–Danforth subway line, the city's first east-west subway line.
