The next Prince Edward Island general election will occur on or before 7 October 2019, as the Prince Edward Island Elections Act requires a provincial election to be held by the first Monday of October in the fourth calendar year unless it is called earlier by the Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island due to a motion of no-confidence in the Legislative Assembly or at the request of the Premier. [1] The election will be held concurrently with a referendum on electoral reform.
The Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island is the viceregal representative in Prince Edward Island of the Canadian monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, who operates distinctly within the province but is also shared equally with the ten other jurisdictions of Canada, as well as the other Commonwealth realms and any subdivisions thereof, and resides predominantly in her oldest realm, the United Kingdom. The Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island is appointed in the same manner as the other provincial viceroys in Canada and is similarly tasked with carrying out most of the monarch's constitutional and ceremonial duties.
The Premier of Prince Edward Island is the first minister for the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. They are the province's head of government and de facto chief executive.
In the previous election, on May 4, 2015, the Liberal Party, led by Premier Wade MacLauchlan, was re-elected to a majority government. The official opposition Progressive Conservatives, under leader Rob Lantz, increased its seat count from 3 before the election to 8, despite Lantz losing in Charlottetown-Brighton. Meanwhile, the Green Party, under leader Peter Bevan-Baker, won its first ever seat, Bevan-Baker's, in Kellys Cross-Cumberland. [2] Despite the increase in the Progressive Conservatives' seat count, on September 23 of that year, Lantz stepped down as leader. [3] The Progressive Conservatives held a leadership election on October 20, 2017, and chose MLA James Aylward as their leader.
The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party is a major political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. The party is led by Premier Wade MacLauchlan, a former president of the University of Prince Edward Island.
H. Wade MacLauchlan, is a Canadian academic and politician. He is the 32nd and current premier of Prince Edward Island, since February 23, 2015.
Rob Lantz is a Canadian politician. He was the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island for seven months in 2015, having been elected during the party's leadership election on February 28, 2015. From 2006 to 2014, Lantz was a member of the Charlottetown City Council. Lantz led the party in the 2015 provincial election, but fell 24 votes short in his attempt to win his own seat representing the riding of Charlottetown-Brighton in the provincial legislature. The margin was reduced to 22 votes after a recount. Lantz resigned as PC leader on September 23, 2015.

Peter Stewart Bevan-Baker is a Scottish Canadian politician and perennial candidate. He is the leader of the Green Party of Prince Edward Island and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island representing Kellys Cross-Cumberland. He previously stood as a candidate for the Green Party of Ontario and the Green Party of Canada. Bevan-Baker is a dentist by profession as well as being an active writer, musician and public speaker.
Kellys Cross-Cumberland is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island, Canada. It was previously known as Crapaud-Hazel Grove. It is the first provincial constituency to elect a member of the Green Party, and only the second provincial constituency to elect a member of any third party. Peter Bevan-Baker defeated the Liberal candidate Valerie Docherty in the provincial election on May 4, 2015.

The Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island is one of two major political parties on Prince Edward Island. It and its rival, the Liberals have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851.

The 2016 Plebiscite on Democratic Renewal was a non-binding referendum on electoral reform held in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island between 27 October – 7 November 2016. This was the second electoral reform referendum to be held in Prince Edward Island, following a vote to maintain the status quo in 2005. The referendum asked which of five voting systems residents would prefer to use in electing members to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. The referendum, after four instant run-off rounds, indicated mixed member proportional representation was the preferred choice with 55.03% support on the final ballot.
A Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island leadership election was held on October 20, 2017 choosing MLA James Aylward as the new leader. Previous party leader Rob Lantz resigned on September 23, 2015 after serving only seven months. The interim party leader was MLA Jamie Fox, from Lantz's resignation to Aylward's election.
A referendum on electoral reform will be held on or before October 7, 2019 in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. The referendum will occur at the same time as the 2019 provincial election.
