6980 Kyusakamoto, provisional designation 1993 SV1, is a stony Koronis asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt, approximately 9 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered by Japanese astronomers Kin Endate and Kazuro Watanabe at Kitami Observatory on 16 September 1993. [8] The asteroid was named after Japanese singer Kyu Sakamoto. [2]
Kyusakamoto is a member of the Koronis family, which is named after 158 Koronis and consists of about 300 known bodies with nearly ecliptical orbits. It orbits the Sun in the outer main-belt at a distance of 2.7–3.0 AU once every 4 years and 9 months (1,743 days). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.05 and an inclination of 3° with respect to the ecliptic. [1]
In November 1979, it was first identified as 1979 WH7 at Crimea–Nauchnij, extending the body's observation arc by 14 years prior to its official discovery observation at Kitami. [8]
In August 2012, a rotational lightcurve of Kyusakamoto was obtained through photometric observations at the Palomar Transient Factory, California. The lightcurve showed a period of 3.2529±0.0042 hours with a brightness amplitude of 0.40 in magnitude (U=2 ). In the Mould-R filter (R), a different photometric band, the observations rendered a nearly identical period of 3.2526±0.0042 hours with an amplitude of 0.41 (U=2 ). [6]
According to the survey carried out by the NEOWISE mission of NASA's space-based Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, Kyusakamoto measures 8.8 kilometers in diameter and its surface has a high albedo of 0.30, [4] [5] while the Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link assumes a stony albedo of 0.24 and calculates a slightly larger diameter of 9.0 kilometers. [3]
This minor planet was named in memory of Japanese popular singer Kyu Sakamoto (1941–1985), who died in the crash of Japan Airlines Flight 123, the deadliest single-aircraft accident in history. Adored as "Kyu-chan", he is best known for his hit, I Look Up As I Walk ("Sukiyaki"), which became a worldwide bestseller. The naming also refers to his collaborators Rokusuke Ei and Hachidai Nakamura, songwriter and pianist, respectively. [2] The official naming citation was published by the Minor Planet Center on 5 October 1998 ( M.P.C. 32789). [9]
2985 Shakespeare (prov. designation: 1983 TV1) is a stony Koronian asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 12 October 1983, by American astronomer Edward Bowell at Lowell's Anderson Mesa Station near Flagstaff, Arizona, and later named after William Shakespeare. The presumed S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 6.1 hours and measures approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in diameter.
1840 Hus is a stony Koronis asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 12.5 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 26 October 1971, by Czech astronomer Luboš Kohoutek at the Bergedorf Observatory in Hamburg, Germany. The S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 4.8 hours and is likely elongated in shape. It was later named after 15th-century theologian Jan Hus.
10252 Heidigraf, provisional designation 4164 T-1, is a Koronian asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 6 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered during the Palomar–Leiden Trojan survey on 26 March 1971, by Ingrid and Cornelis van Houten at Leiden, and Tom Gehrels at Palomar Observatory in California, United States. The likely elongated S-type asteroid has a brightness variation of 0.56 magnitude. It was named after Heidi Graf, a former Head of the ESTEC Communications Office.
9999 Wiles, provisional designation 4196 T-2, is a Koronian asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt, approximately 6 to 7 kilometers in diameter. It was named after British mathematician Andrew Wiles.
9971 Ishihara is a stony Flora asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 5 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered by Japanese amateur astronomers Kin Endate and Kazuro Watanabe at Kitami Observatory on 16 April 1993, and named after Takahiro Ishihara, president of the astronomical society at Hiroshima.
9916 Kibirev, provisional designation 1978 TR2, is a Koronian asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 3 October 1978, by astronomer Nikolai Chernykh at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnij, on the Crimean peninsula. The likely S-type asteroid has a rotation period of about 15.2 hours and was named after Russian informatician Sergej Kibirev.
5677 Aberdonia, provisional designation 1987 SQ1, is a stony Koronis asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt, approximately 8 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 21 September 1987, by American astronomer Edward Bowell at Lowell's Anderson Mesa Station in Flagstaff, Arizona, United States. The asteroid was named for the Scottish University of Aberdeen.
3409 Abramov, provisional designation 1977 RE6, is a stony Koronian asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt, approximately 11 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 9 September 1977, by Soviet–Russian astronomer Nikolai Chernykh at Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnyj on the Crimean peninsula. The asteroid was named after Russian writer Fyodor Abramov.
6247 Amanogawa, provisional designation 1990 WY3, is a background asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 7 kilometers (4 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 21 November 1990, by Japanese amateur astronomers Kin Endate and Kazuro Watanabe at the Kitami Observatory. The X-type asteroid has a rotation period of 12.38 hours. It was named after the Amanogawa River on the island of Hokkaido, Japan.

The S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 4.91 hours and is a suspected binary system. The asteroid was named for Soviet scientist and pioneer in radar astronomy, Vladimir Kotelnikov.
