The Ateneo de Zamboanga University (Filipino: Pamantasang Ateneo de Zamboanga), also referred to by its acronym AdZU, is a private Catholic coeducational basic and higher education institution run by the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus in Zamboanga City, Philippines. It is the second oldest Jesuit school in the Philippines. It operates on three campuses.

History

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University began as a parochial, Jesuit-run, boys-only elementary school named Escuela Catolica in 1912. [3] [ better source needed ] Under its founder, Fr. Manuel M. Sauras, S.J., Escuela Catolica was incorporated as Ateneo de Zamboanga in 1916. [4] [ better source needed ] Initially a mere elementary school, it began offering secondary education in 1928, headed by the American Jesuit Fr. Thomas J. Murray, S.J. [5] It became a college in 1952, and a university in August 2001.[ citation needed ]

On July 7, 2017, the historic 67-year-old Brebeuf Gymnasium was burnt to the ground; [6] the Sauras, Kostka, and Gonzaga Halls were also damaged. [7] The Zamboanga City government estimated that the cost of the damages amounted to ₱5 million. [8]

On December 8, 2018, the Faustino W. Saavedra Building (FWS Building) was inaugurated in the Fr. Eusebio G. Salvador, S.J. Campus. It houses the Senior High School Unit, along with the adjacent Kostka Building. [9]

Academics

Admissions

AdZU operates with a selective admissions policy. [10] All of the university's courses require, among other things, passing an entrance exam (which, in the case of the Grade School, is instead called an 'assessment test'); past education records are also required for examination. The School of Medicine requires results in the National Medical Admission Test while the College of Law requires results in the PhilSAT; all other units administer their own entrance examinations. Student council

The Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral ng Ateneo de Zamboanga University (SMADZU) was the college unit's student government before 2009. Currently in its place is El Consejo Atenista, which was created with the objective of being a more representative student government. [12] [ better source needed ]

The Church of the Gesù is the Roman Catholic church of the Ateneo de Manila University campus in Quezon City in the Philippines. The landmark was designed by Jose Pedro Recio and Carmelo Casas. The edifice’s massive triangular structure symbolizes the Holy Trinity, as well as the three-fold mission and vision of the school. Its shape and design are also meant to suggest the outstretched arms of the Sacred Heart, and the traditional Filipino bahay kubo. The site has a total area of 10,200 square metres (110,000 sq ft) and seating capacity for 1,000 persons. The church is situated on Sacred Heart Hill, a small hill overlooking Bellarmine Field, believed to be the highest point in barangay Loyola Heights. In its immediate vicinity are the dormitories and the John Pollock Renewal Center. The peak cross and carillon of the church can be seen from Katipunan Avenue, which borders the campus to the west.

James Bertram Reuter was an American Jesuit Catholic priest who lived in the Philippines since he was 22 and taught at Ateneo de Manila University. He was a well-known public figure who was a writer, director and producer in theatre, radio, print and film. He was also a prominent figure in the resistance against the two-decade rule of President Ferdinand Marcos, and played a key role in the 1986 People Power Revolution that overthrew Marcos. He educated and trained students in creative works, inspired by the works of Christ, instilling the importance of prayers most especially the Holy Rosary, working alongside and continuing the mission of the Rev. Patrick Peyton, best known as the "Rosary Priest".

Primitivo E. Viray Jr., S.J., also known as Fr. Jun Viray, is the 12th Provincial Superior of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines, serving from 2017 to 2023.

He also served as the second president of Ateneo de Naga University from 1999 to 2011. He is currently taking his sabbatical leave in Malaybalay, Bukidnon, Philippines.

Karel Santos San Juan, S.J. is a Filipino Jesuit priest who currently serves as the fifth president of Ateneo de Davao University. He assumed office on September 14, 2023 and succeeded Fr. Joel Tabora. Prior to this, he was president of Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
