The women's 20 kilometres walk competition of the athletics events at the 2023 Pan American Games was held on October 29 on the streets of Santiago, Chile. [1] The times of the event was annulled after the course was found to be about 3 km short. [2] Peru's Kimberly Garcia won the gold medal, but due to the error with the course, no athletes received any ranking points towards qualification for the 2024 Summer Olympics. [3]

Gabriela Kimberly García León is a female racewalker from Peru. She won gold medals in the 20 kilometres walk and 35 km walk at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, becoming the first ever Peruvian world medallist and the first Latin American to earn two titles at the same World Athletics Championships. García is the South American record holder for the longer event.

The 2023 Pan American Games, officially the XIX Pan American Games and commonly known as Santiago 2023, were an international multi-sport event governed by the Panam Sports Organization, held in Santiago, Chile from October 20 to November 5, 2023; preliminary rounds in certain events began on October 18, 2023. These are the first Pan American Games to be held in Chile, and the eighth to be held in South America. This was the most successful Pan American Games for Brazil with 66 gold medals and for Mexico with 52 gold medals.

Viviane Santana Lyra is a Brazilian racewalker. She competed in the women's 20 kilometres walk event at the 2019 World Athletics Championships held in Doha, Qatar. She did not finish her race. She also competed in the same event at the 2022 World Athletics Championships held in Eugene, Oregon, United States.

The 2021 British Athletics Marathon and 20 km Walk Trial was held on 26 March 2021 as a trial event for British athletes to qualify for the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. It was the first time since 1980 that a dedicated marathon trial event was held, and the courses consisted of multiple laps around Kew Gardens in London.

The 35 kilometres race walk is a road racewalking event which became a standard championship discipline in 2022, with world records being recognised after 1 January 2023.
