Aviara is a resort neighborhood in the southern part of Carlsbad, located in San Diego County, California. The community is approximately 30 minutes from downtown San Diego. In 1989, the community was developed and later incorporated into the city of Carlsbad. As of 2005, it had a total population of 5,050.[ needs update ]
The community is set in the hills of southern Carlsbad, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Batiquitos Lagoon. Aviara is just north of the city of Encinitas and west of the neighborhood of La Costa, also located in Carlsbad. The community is mostly residential except for the Park Hyatt Resort and Aviara Golf and Country Club. In the annual Forbes magazine ranking of "Most Expensive Zip Codes" in the U.S., Aviara's 92011 ZIP Code ranked among some of the most expensive in the nation. Many properties have views of the ocean, Batiquitos Lagoon, and Aviara golf course. The community is noted for its lush landscaping, gated communities, and abundance of jacaranda trees that frame many of the streets.
During 2008, Aviara was the only community in San Diego County not affected by the housing crisis.
To preserve quality of life, the community council has numerous stringent ordinances, including laws against dead lawns, architectural styles, permanent basketball hoops and courts, satellite dishes and exterior paint colors. It is also a violation to leave trashcans on the street or in public view. With the exception of one community, Mirabella, multi-family housing is not permitted. [1]
The community received some media attention in 2004 when a resident was arrested for defrauding an estimated $191 million from elderly people across the United States. Larre Jaye Schlarmann and three others were each ordered held on $144 million bail. [2] In 2005 Schlarmann entered into a plea agreement, pleading guilty to money laundering and elder abuse. [3]
Well-known residents of the area include members of the Pulitzer family.

Younger children attend Aviara Oaks Elementary and Middle Schools while Carlsbad High School serves the older students. Sage Creek High School is the second high school in the Carlsbad Unified School District that opened its doors for 2013-2014 school year. Private schools including Pacific Ridge School, Horizon Prep, St. Patrick's School, and Army & Navy Academy are located close by.
Aviara also houses one of the best golf courses in North America, the Aviara Golf Club, featuring a coastal layout with a par of 72, 18 holes over 7,007 yards sculpted around the rolling hillsides.
The Real Housewives of Miami star and former Dancing With the Stars contestant, Joanna Krupa, married her longtime love, Romain Zago, at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort for a reported $1 million wedding. The wedding was featured on Bravo's show.

Tierrasanta, Spanish for "holy land," or "holy ground", is a community within the city of San Diego, California. The Omni La Costa Resort & Spa is a luxury destination resort hotel opened in 1965, located in Carlsbad, California, and is owned by Omni Hotels & Resorts, based out of Dallas, Texas. The resort is known for its golf courses and its location in the San Diego area hills. Professional golf and tennis tournaments settled into La Costa throughout the 1980s, ultimately hosting 37 PGA Tour and tennis events. Currently the resort is home to events such as World Team Tennis and The California State Amateur Championship. Omni La Costa Resort & Spa is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and has hosted the La Costa Film Festival.
Pala is a small, mostly Native American, community and CDP located in the Pala Indian Reservation, located within San Diego County, California. It is located in the Aviara neighborhood of Carlsbad and is situated above the Batiquitos Lagoon. The resort opened on June 21, 2010 and features several pools, meeting rooms and ballrooms, restaurants, a spa, and a golf course. Prior to opening under the Park Hyatt name, it was part of the Toronto-based Four Seasons chain of luxury hotels and resorts.
Elfin Forest is an unincorporated residential community of San Diego County, in the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains. The community is southwest of Escondido and according to the USGS it is located at 33°04′25″N117°09′51″W in the Escondido ZIP code of 92029. It borders the rural, unincorporated town of Harmony Grove to the northeast, San Marcos to the north and west, Olivenhain to the southwest, and Rancho Santa Fe to the south.
The Agua Hedionda Lagoon is a lagoon in Carlsbad, California, that is fed by the Agua Hedionda Creek. Stewardship of much of the lagoon is held by the Encina Power Station and its owner NRG Energy. In November 2000 the Agua Hedionda Lagoon was designated as a critical habitat for the tidewater goby.
The Batiquitos Lagoon is a coastal wetland and estuary located between southern Carlsbad and Encinitas, in the North County region of San Diego County, California. The lagoon itself consists of 610 acres with a drainage basin of about 55,000 acres. Its primary freshwater tributaries being San Marcos Creek from the east and Encinitas Creek which flows north along Green Valley, entering the lagoon under El Camino Real and La Costa Avenue, respectively. It is one of the few remaining tidal wetlands on the southern California coast.

Rancho Las Encinitas was a 4,434-acre (17.94 km2) Mexican land grant in present-day San Diego County, California given in 1842 by Governor Juan Alvarado to Andrés Ybarra. The grant was named “Los Encinitos” which means " little oaks", but was later misspelled as “Las Encinitas”. The grant extended along the Pacific coast north from San Elijo Lagoon to Batiquitos Lagoon, and encompassed present-day Leucadia, Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Olivenhain, California.
The JTBC Classic Presented by Barbasol, formerly the Kia Classic, is a women's professional golf tournament in Southern California on the LPGA Tour. It debuted in 2010 at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, then moved north for a year in 2011 to the Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms in the City of Industry in Los Angeles County. The tournament returned to La Costa in 2012 and moved to Aviara Golf Club, also in Carlsbad, for 2013.

San Elijo Lagoon SMCA (SMCA) is a marine protected area that protects the lagoon near Encinitas in San Diego County on California’s south coast. The SMCA covers .44 square miles. The SMCA protects marine by limiting the removal of marine wildlife from within its borders. San Elijo SMCA prohibits take of all living marine resources except operation and maintenance, maintenance dredging, habitat restoration including sediment deposition, research and education, and maintenance of artificial structures inside the conservation area per any required federal, state and local permits, or activities pursuant to Section 632, or as otherwise authorized by the department.
Sage Creek High School is a public high school in Carlsbad, California. It opened in the fall of 2013 and is located in a coastal suburb of San Diego. Sage Creek specializes in the STEM fields and was created to alleviate growing enrollment at Carlsbad High School. Although the school is public, a lottery for admission is held if a class reaches a certain threshold. Sage Creek offers Wrestling, Lacrosse, Tennis, Volleyball, Girls' Field Hockey, Basketball, Cross Country, Track and Field, Golf, Boys' Baseball, Girls' Softball, Soccer, and Swimming.
The North Coast Corridor is an infrastructure improvement project in northern San Diego County, California that will upgrade road, rail, pedestrian, and bicycle transportation infrastructure, as well as fund environmental restoration. The project has a $6 billion budget, and after beginning the first phases of construction in late 2016 is planned to be completed over the following 40 years.
