Pine Hills is an unincorporated community in San Diego County, California, [1] about a mile south and slightly west of Julian. It is located along and at the southern end of Pine Hills Road, about two miles south of state Highway 78. The residents of Pine Hills have an address in Julian in the 92036 zip code.

Pine Hills is located largely within the Cleveland National Forest on a knoll that extends from about 3,900 feet (1,200 m) asl to about 4,300 feet (1,300 m) asl.[ citation needed ] The community includes the Pine Hills Lodge and the YMCA's Camp Marston and Raintree Ranch. [2] [3] It is near William Heise County Park, Pine Hills Fire Station and Robotic Weather Station.[ citation needed ] The Pine Hills Mutual Water Company is based in the community. [4] Many homes in Pine Hills burnt in the 2003 Cedar Fire.[ citation needed ]

History

Ed Fletcher acquired land adjacent to his existing property in 1910 to prevent logging. In 1912, Fletcher, George Marston, and banker Myron Gilmore developed part of the land into the Pine Hills development. [5] Fletcher founded the Pine Hills Community Association in 1922. [6] The neighboring Frisius Park subdivision was developed in the 1960s. [7] Deer Lake Park is another subdivision of Pine Hills. [8]

Pine Hills had its own post office from September 11, 1913, to June 30, 1931, when it was closed and moved to Julian. [9]

Within the park is the prominent Cuyamaca Peak, the second-highest mountain in San Diego County at 6,512 feet (1,984.9 m). The modern community of Cuyamaca is on the north side of the lake. It consists of the Cuyamaca Woods, Cuyamaca Resort, and North Peak areas.

Earthquake Valley is a desert valley east of Julian, California, which contains parts of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. It is the location of the Shelter Valley Ranchos subdivision, which is also known as the unincorporated community of Shelter Valley. The official USGS place name for the geologic feature in which Shelter Valley is situated is "Earthquake Valley", and the 1959 USGS Topographic map makes no reference to Shelter Valley. The name of the unincorporated community Shelter Valley is typically used both locally and by the media to refer generally to the geological feature of Earthquake Valley, and it is common for both names to be referenced in publications after the 1962 establishment of the subdivision.
