Awsworth is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Broxtowe, Nottinghamshire, England. Its population of 2,266 in the 2001 census [1] and 2,204 in that of 2011, [2] further decreasing to 2,166 for the 2021 census. [3] It is a component of the Greater Nottingham area, between Kimberley, Nottinghamshire and Ilkeston, Derbyshire. It has been a civil parish since 1894. [4]
The Parish Church of St Peter has a remaining chancel from the brick church of 1746. The nave was rebuilt in 1902–1903 by Naylor and Sale of Derby, in a freely adapted Gothic style. A projected north-west tower was never built. [5]
Awsworth once had a station on the Great Northern (later LNER) line from Nottingham to Derby, crossing the Erewash Valley to Ilkeston over the Bennerley Viaduct. This closed in September 1964. At Awsworth Junction, a short distance to the east, a branch line curved north to Pinxton. This line closed in January 1963.
Near the junction the line crossed a viaduct almost half a mile in length across the Giltbrook valley. This was known variously as Awsworth Viaduct, Giltbrook Viaduct and Kimberley Viaduct, but commonly by locals as the "Forty Bridges", although the exact number of arches and girder spans was 43. This viaduct has been demolished, but the Bennerley Viaduct remains.
Eastwood is a former coal mining town and civil parish in the Broxtowe district of Nottinghamshire, England, 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Nottingham. Mentioned in Domesday Book, it expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution. The Midland Railway was formed here and it is the birthplace of D. H. Lawrence.
Ilkeston is a town located in the Borough of Erewash in Derbyshire, England, with a population of 40,953 at the 2021 census. Its major industries, coal mining, iron working and lace making/textiles, have now all but disappeared. Part of the Nottingham Urban Area, the town is located between the cities Derby and Nottingham, near the M1 motorway, and on the River Erewash. Its eastern boundary borders Nottinghamshire to the east and is only two miles from Nottingham's western edge.

Trowell is a village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, England. It lies a few miles west of Nottingham, in the borough of Broxtowe on the border with Derbyshire. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 2,568, falling to 2,378 at the 2011 census, and 2,287 at the 2021 census.
The Derbyshire and Staffordshire extension of the Great Northern Railway was an English railway network built by the GNR to get access to coal resources in the area to the north and west of Nottingham. The Midland Railway had obstructed the GNR in its attempts to secure a share of the lucrative business of transporting coal from the area, and in frustration the GNR built the line. The line was forked: it reached Pinxton in 1875 and a junction with the North Staffordshire Railway at Egginton, approaching Burton on Trent in 1878. The line cut through Derby, resulting in considerable demolition of housing there.
The Erewash Valley Line is a railway line in England, running from Long Eaton, between Nottingham and Derby, and Clay Cross, near Chesterfield. The southern part was opened by the Midland Railway in 1847 as far as Codnor Park, where it connected to established ironworks, and soon after, a line to Pinxton and Mansfield.
Bennerley Viaduct is a former railway bridge, now a foot and cycle bridge, between Ilkeston, Derbyshire, and Awsworth, Nottinghamshire, in central England. It was completed in 1877 and carried the Great Northern Railway's (GNR) Derbyshire Extension over the River Erewash, which forms the county boundary, and its wide, flat valley. The engineer was Samuel Abbott, who worked under Richard Johnson, the GNR's chief engineer. The site required a bespoke design as the ground would not support a traditional masonry viaduct due to extensive coal mining. The viaduct consists of 16 spans of wrought iron, lattice truss girders, carried on 15 wrought iron piers which are not fixed to the ground but are supported by brick and ashlar bases. The viaduct is 60 feet high, 26 feet wide between the parapets, and over a quarter of a mile long. It was once part of a chain of bridges and embankments carrying the railway for around two miles across the valley but most of its supporting structures were demolished when the line closed in 1968. The only similar surviving bridge in the United Kingdom is Meldon Viaduct in Devon.
Greasley is a civil parish north west of Nottingham in Nottinghamshire, England. Although it is thought there was once a village called Greasley, there is no settlement of that name today as it was destroyed by the Earl of Rutland. The built up areas in the parish are Beauvale, Giltbrook, Moorgreen, Newthorpe, Watnall and parts of Eastwood, Kimberley and Nuthall. There is also a small hamlet known as Bog-End. The parish is one of the largest in Nottinghamshire at 7.63 square miles (19.8 km2), the 2001 UK Census reporting it had a total population of 10,467, increasing to 11,014 in 2011, and 11,241 at the 2021 census.

Cossall is a village and civil parish 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Ilkeston in Nottinghamshire, England. The 2001 census recorded a parish population of 612, reducing slightly to 606 at the 2011 census, and further to 562 at the 2021 census. There is also a ward of Broxtowe Council called Cossall and Kimberley. The population is listed under Kimberley. North of the hamlet is a slag heap formed of tons of waste extracted from local coal mines.
