The BYD 8TT is an all-electric, heavy duty (Class 8) semi-truck sold by BYD Auto in the United States, China and other markets.

Design

The battery used in the 8TT has more than 400 kWh of capacity, which according to the manufacturer translates into an all-electric range of 124 miles at full load or 167 miles at half load. The vehicle's GCWR is 105,000 lb (47,627 kg). [2] [3]

These figures are for the second (current) generation of the 8TT.

Users

Anheuser-Busch announced they will deploy 21 of these trucks on California roads. [4] [2]

Also in California, GSC Logistics uses three BYD 8TT trucks, while Golden State Express operates two. [5] [6]

In early 2020, BYD announced it delivered its 100th electric truck in the United States, and more than 12,000 electric trucks worldwide, although these statistics also include other models, not only the 8TT. [7]

Besides the 8TT Class 8 semi-truck, BYD offers a wide range of all-electric trucks, including the T10, which is a Class 8 chassis truck that can be equipped with many different superstructures (available with a 324 kWh battery); [8] the T8, which is also a Class 8 chassis truck; Class 6 trucks; and lighter commercial vehicles. Just like the 8TT, these are not prototypes or upcoming models, but existing vehicles sold to, and used by, municipal/local government entities and private customers.

An electric bus is a bus that is propelled using electric motors as opposed to an internal combustion engine. Electric buses can store the needed electricity on board, or be fed continuously from an external source. The majority of buses storing electricity are battery electric buses, where the electric motor obtains energy from an onboard battery pack, although examples of other storage modes do exist, such as the gyrobus which uses flywheel energy storage. When electricity is not stored on board, it is supplied by contact with outside power sources. For example, overhead wires as in the trolleybus, or with a ground-level power supply, or through inductive charging.

The BYD F3DM (Dual-mode) was a plug-in hybrid compact sedan manufactured by BYD with an all-electric range of 60 kilometres (37 mi) and a hybrid electric powertrain that can extend the range an additional 480 kilometres (300 mi). The F3DM is the world's first mass-produced plug-in hybrid automobile and went on sale to government agencies and corporations in China on December 15, 2008. During its first year in the market the F3DM plug-in sold only 48 vehicles. Sales to the general public began in Shenzhen in March 2010, and 417 units were sold during 2010. Cumulative sales in China reached 3,284 units through October 2013, when sales ended, and only 11 units were sold in Europe through October 2012.

The BYD e6 is an all-electric compact crossover/compact MPV manufactured by BYD from 2009. Field testing for the first generation model began in China in May 2010 with 40 units operating as taxis in the city of Shenzhen. Sales to the general public began in Shenzhen in October 2011, over two years behind schedule of the originally planned release date of 2009. A number of e6 units were operating in fleet service as taxis in China, Indonesia, Colombia, Belgium, the U.S., the Netherlands, and the U.K. Australia will be introducing the e6 taxi fleet in 2020. Since 2010 sales in China totaled 34,862 units through December 2016. The BYD e6 ranked as the best-selling pure electric car in China in 2016 and won a golden medal for “Best Quality Product” at the Havana International Fair 2015.

The Lion Electric Company, is a Canadian-based manufacturer of commercial vehicles. Currently the biggest electric vehicle manufacturer in its segment, Lion primarily produces yellow school buses, public transit buses, semi-trucks, bucket trucks, and garbage/refuse trucks.

The BYD K-series bus are a line of battery electric buses manufactured by the Chinese automaker BYD, powered with its self-developed lithium iron phosphate battery, featuring a typical operating range of 250 kilometres (160 mi) per charge under urban road conditions. It is available in several different nominal lengths, from 7.0 to 13.7 m and also as a 18 m (60 ft) (articulated) bus. In China, the term new energy vehicle (NEV) is used to designate automobiles that are fully or predominantly powered by electric energy, which include plug-in electric vehicles — battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) — and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV). The Chinese Government began implementation of its NEV program in 2009 to foster the development and introduction of new energy vehicles, and electric car buyers are eligible for public subsidies.

Nikola Corporation is an American manufacturer of heavy-duty commercial battery-electric vehicles, fuel-cell electric vehicles, and energy solutions. It presented several vehicle concepts from 2016 to 2020, the first of which was a natural gas fueled turbine-electric semi truck. The company went public on June 4, 2020. In February 2022, the company projected deliveries of between 300 and 500 of its first battery-electric semitrucks — known as the Nikola Tre — to customers. The company delivered its first two battery-electric trucks in December 2021. Like Tesla, Inc., the company is named in honor of Nikola Tesla, but is not related to the inventor. Nikola Corporation is based in Phoenix, Arizona.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tesla Semi</span> Electric Class 8 semi-trailer truck

The Tesla Semi is a battery electric Class 8 semi-truck built by Tesla, Inc. since 2022. The truck is powered by three motors, and is claimed by Tesla to have approximately three times the power of a typical diesel semi truck, a range of 500 miles (800 km), and operate at an energy use of less than 2 kWh/mi (1.2 kW⋅h/km).

Workhorse Group Incorporated, originally AMP Electric Vehicles, is an original equipment manufacturer and technology company headquartered in Sharonville, Ohio, U.S. Workhorse makes electric delivery vans, drones, and telematics software designed for last-mile delivery. Their products include commercial electric vehicles, Horsefly delivery drones, and a Metron telematics software system.
