Burlington Mall is a shopping mall located in Burlington, Massachusetts. It was opened in 1968. Anchor stores are Nordstrom and Macy's, with one vacant anchor building formerly housing Lord & Taylor. The mall currently includes retailers Primark, Fabletics, Madewell, Tory Burch, Marc Jacobs, and Kate Spade New York.
Burlington Mall was developed by Herbert H. Johnson Associates (architects) and Symmes, Maini, and McKee Inc. (associate architects and engineers). New York–based Bellwether Properties purchased the property in 1920 for more than $2,000. Part of the land the mall is on was owned by a local produce merchant and farmer, Vesili Matto. The Albanian immigrant leased his land to the developers for $10,000 a year until 2065, when the 100-year lease is up. It will then be sold from the remaining Matto family to the mall for the value of the land which experts say will be around $75 million. The mall opened with the anchor stores Sears, Jordan Marsh, and Filene's. In its early years, the mall also featured a small Stop & Shop supermarket, a two-screen cinema, and an indoor open-air food court. A new addition housing Lord & Taylor was built on the east side of the mall in 1978.
A second story was added to the entire mall in 1988. However, when the mall was built, the anchors were in their two- and three-story forms. Before the renovations and expansions on the Natick Mall were finished in 2007, the Burlington Mall was the largest mall in Massachusetts. It holds the No. 2 spot on the list.
From 2006 to 2008, the mall underwent an expansion project that added a new wing (with approximately 20 new stores) on the site of the demolished Filene's building with a new Nordstrom department store anchoring the wing. The new wing was partially opened in November 2007. Tenants in the new wing include upscale stores such as Michael Kors, Anthropologie, Lululemon Athletica, Urban Outfitters and Free People as its tenants. A similar expansion, also including a Nordstrom department store, at the nearby Northshore Mall commenced construction shortly after.
Burlington Mall's property transformation began in January 2018 and continued until Fall 2022. There were three phases to the project with their own scope of work as outlined below:
Burlington Mall is also notable for several unique dining venues and it was home to the Bazille in Nordstrom, and one of only a few Chick-Fil-A locations in the state of Massachusetts until 2014. The mall was used in the 2009 film Paul Blart: Mall Cop during the chase scene.
The 2009 film Paul Blart: Mall Cop was filmed at the mall, representing the fictional West Orange Pavilion Mall. [2] Around this time, the mall had several stores that were used in the film and are no longer in business, such as a KB Toys store, which appeared in a deleted scene (replaced by a Payless ShoeSource store, which is now closed), and a The Sharper Image store, from which during a scene in the film, Blart (Kevin James) grabs a camera to find out where Veck Sims (Keir O'Donnell) is holding the hostages (replaced by a Sur La Table store).
King of Prussia, also referred to as King of Prussia Mall, and referred to locals as KOP, is a shopping mall located in the community of King of Prussia in Upper Merion Township, Pennsylvania. Staten Island Mall is a shopping mall in New Springville, Staten Island, New York City, opened in 1973. It is the only indoor shopping mall in the borough. It is the largest retail center on the island and is the site of the island's third-largest public transit hub after the St. George Terminal and Eltingville Transit Center, with numerous bus routes that connect to the periphery of the mall area. South Shore Plaza is a shopping mall in Braintree, Massachusetts, United States, owned by Simon Property Group. It is near the Braintree Split interchange, off the I-93 / US 1 and Route 37 junction. Stratford Square Mall was a shopping mall that opened on March 9, 1981, in Bloomingdale, Illinois, a northwestern suburb of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Originally owned by Urban Retail Properties Co., the 1,300,000-square-foot (120,000 m2) indoor shopping mall was designed by RTKL Associates, and built by Graycor of Oakbrook Terrace, IL. There are six vacant anchor stores that were last occupied by JCPenney, Carson Pirie Scott, Sears, Round One, Century Theatres, and Burlington. The former Marshall Field's/Macy's space was demolished in 2019 to make way for a new Woodman's Food Market grocery store building. The mall was bought by Namdar Realty Group in 2019. On January 22, 2024, the Village of Bloomingdale purchased the mall and gave all of the remaining tenants in the mall a 90-day notice. The mall closed on April 21, 2024.
The Loop, formerly Methuen Mall, is a shopping mall in Methuen, Massachusetts, United States. It was built in 1973 as an enclosed shopping mall on a 60-acre (240,000 m2) site and initially included Howlands and Sears as its anchor stores, as well as 70 other retailers. In 1977, Howlands was replaced by Jordan Marsh, while Filene's Basement was added in the 1980s. Methuen Mall suffered a significant loss in tenancy after both Sears and Filene's Basement moved to The Mall at Rockingham Park across the state line in Salem, New Hampshire. It remained in operation until 1997 and was demolished in early 1999, undergoing redevelopment soon afterward into a strip mall known as The Loop. Major tenants of The Loop are The Home Depot, Marshalls, and AMC Theatres.
The Natick Mall is a shopping mall in Natick, Massachusetts. The original facility was the first enclosed shopping mall in Greater Boston upon opening in 1966; it was demolished and replaced by a larger building in 1994 and expanded in 2007. The mall, with the adjacent Shopper's World power center in Framingham, are components of the Golden Triangle shopping district in the center of MetroWest, situated between Route 9 and Route 30. With 1,695,884 square feet (157,553 m2) of gross leasable area, it is the largest shopping complex in New England. It is owned and managed by Brookfield Properties, a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management.
Westfarms is a shopping mall on the West Hartford–Farmington town line in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It was opened in 1974, expanded in 1982 and 1995–1997, and remodeled in 2008–2009. With 1,267,000 square feet (117,700 m2) of gross leasable area, Westfarms is the third-largest mall in Connecticut. It is located on Route 71, off the I-84 and Route 9 junction and near several open-air shopping plazas. The mall is currently owned and managed by Taubman Centers, a subsidiary of Simon Property Group.
The Mall at Whitney Field is a shopping mall located off of Route 2 near the junction with Interstate 190 in Leominster, Massachusetts. The mall opened in 1967 and was renovated and renamed in 2004. The mall's anchor stores are Burlington, Gardner Outlet Furniture, and JCPenney, with one vacant anchor last occupied by Sears. The mall was previously owned by Walton Street Capital LLC of Chicago until May 2013 when Vintage Real Estate acquired the mall with plans to renovate and turnaround the struggling mall. As of January 8, 2020, the mall is now owned by Hull Property Group.
