Accra is the capital and largest city of Ghana, located on the southern coast at the Gulf of Guinea, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean. As of 2021 census, the Accra Metropolitan District, 20.4 km2 (7.9 sq mi), had a population of 284,124 inhabitants, and the larger Greater Accra Region, 3,245 km2 (1,253 sq mi), had a population of 5,455,692 inhabitants. In common usage, the name "Accra" often refers to the territory of the Accra Metropolitan District as it existed before 2008, when it covered 199.4 km2 (77.0 sq mi). This territory has since been split into 13 local government districts: 12 independent municipal districts and the reduced Accra Metropolitan District (20.4 km2), which is the only district within the capital to be granted city status. This territory of 199.4 km2 contained 1,782,150 inhabitants at the 2021 census, and serves as the capital of Ghana, while the district under the jurisdiction of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly proper (20.4 km2) is distinguished from the rest of the capital as the "City of Accra".
The Western Region is located in south Ghana, spreads from the Ivory Coast in the west to the Central region in the east, includes the capital and large twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi on the coast, coastal Axim, and a hilly inland area including Elubo. It includes Ghana's southernmost location, Cape Three Points, where crude oil was discovered in commercial quantities in June 2007. The region covers an area of 13,842 km2, and had a population of 2,060,585 at the 2021 Census.

As of March 2018, it spans an area of approximately 60 km2 (23 sq mi) and encompasses the Ablekuma South, Ashiedu Keteke, and Okaikoi South sub-metropolitan district councils.
Atebubu-Amantin Municipal District is one of the eleven districts in Bono East Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Atebubu District on 10 March 1989, until the northern part of the district was split off to create Pru District on 12 November 2003 ; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Atebubu-Amantin District, which it was later elevated to municipal district assembly status on 15 March 2018 to become Atebubu-Amantin Municipal District. The municipality is located in the east central part of Bono East Region and has Atebubu as its capital town.
Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem Municipal District is one of the twenty-two districts in Central Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem District, which was created from the Cape Coast Municipal Council; until it was later elevated to municipal district assembly status on 29 February 2008 to become Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem Municipal District. The municipality is located in the southwest part of Central Region and has Elmina as its capital town.
Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana. It forms part of the forty-three districts in Ashanti Region, Ghana with Kumasi being its administrative capital. Tamale Metropolitan District is one of the sixteen districts in Northern Region, Ghana. Originally created as a municipal district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Tamale Municipal District, which was created from the former West Dagomba District Council, until it was elevated to metropolitan district assembly status in August 2004. Later, a small northern part of the district was split off to create Sagnarigu District on 24 June 2012 ; thus the remaining part has been retained as Tamale Metropolitan District. The metropolis is located in the northwest part of Northern Region and has Ghana as its capital city. The metro poly is the central business hub of the region.
Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal District is a former district that was located in Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of Accra Metropolitan District in 1988, until the far eastern portion of the district was split off to create Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal District on 1 November 2007 ; thus the remaining part has been retained as Accra Metropolitan District. However on 15 March 2018, it was split off into two new municipal districts: Ledzokuku Municipal District and Krowor Municipal District. The municipality was located in the central part of Greater Accra Region and had Teshie-Nungua as its capital town.
Adenta Municipal District is one of the twenty-nine districts in Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Tema Municipal District, which was created from the former Tema District Council, until two parts of the district were later split off to create Adenta Municipal District and Ashaiman Municipal District respectively on 29 February 2008; thus the remaining part was elevated to metropolitan district assembly status on that same year to become Tema Metropolitan District. The municipality is located in the central part of Greater Accra Region and has Adenta East as its capital town.
Agona East District is one of the twenty-two districts in Eastern Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Agona District in 1988, until the eastern part of the district was split off to create Agona East District on 29 February 2008; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Agona West District, which was also elevated to municipal district assembly status on that same year to become Agona West Municipal District. The district assembly is located in the northeast part of Central Region and has Nsaba as its capital town.
Asunafo North Municipal District is one of the six districts in Ahafo Region, Ghana. It was formerly part of the then-larger Asunafo District from 1988 until the southern part of the district was split off by a decree of president John Agyekum Kufuor on 12 November 2003 to become Asunafo South District. The remaining northern part was renamed as Asunafo North District which was later elevated to municipal status on 29 February 2008 to become Asunafo North Municipal District. The municipality is located in the western part of Ahafo Region and has Goaso as its capital town.
Dormaa Central Municipal District is one of the twelve districts in Bono Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Dormaa District on 10 March 1989; until the eastern part of the district was split off to create Dormaa East District on 1 November 2007 ; thus the remaining part has been retained as Dormaa District. However, on 28 June 2012, the southwest part of the district was split off to create Dormaa West District; while the remaining part was elevated to municipal district assembly status on that same year to become Dormaa Central Municipal District. The municipality is located in the southwest part of Bono Region and has Dormaa Ahenkro as its capital town.

Originally created as a municipal district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Tema Municipal District, which was created from the former Tema District Council, until two parts of the district were later split off to create Adenta Municipal District and Ashaiman Municipal District respectively on 29 February 2008; thus the remaining part was elevated to metropolitan district assembly status on that same year to become Tema Metropolitan District. However on 28 June 2012, the eastern part of the district was split off to create Kpone-Katamanso District ; thus the remaining part has been retained as Tema Metropolitan District. Later on 15 March 2018, a small western portion of the district was split off to create Tema West Municipal District; thus the remaining part has been retained as Tema Metropolitan District. The metropolis is located in the central part of Greater Accra Region and has Tema as its capital town.

Cape Coast Municipal Council is a former district council that was located in Central Region, Ghana. Originally created as a municipal council in 1975. However on 1988, it was split off into two new district assemblies: Cape Coast Municipal District and Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem District. The municipal council was located in the southwest part of Central Region and had Cape Coast as its capital town.
