National Commission for Homoeopathy (formerly known as Central Council of Homoeopathy) is a statutory body under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India. Central Council of Homoeopathy was set up by the Government of India in 1973. The National Commission for Homoeopathy was constituted on 5th July, 2021 and on the same date, the Homoeopathy Central Council Act, 1973 was repealed and the Central Council of Homoeopathy was superseded. It is one of the Professional Councils of University Grants Commission (UGC), formed to monitor higher education in India.^[2] Any institution desiring to grant a qualification in homeopathy is required to apply to the Council, which prescribes course curriculum and maintains central registers of homeopaths.^[3]

History

The institution set up under the Central Council of Homeopathy Act 1973, (Act 59). Any university or similar institution in India offering either a degree or a diploma in homeopathy can do so only if it is approved by CCH, apart from being listed under the schedules of the above-mentioned act.^[4] The CCH also defines particular course curriculum and notifies benchmarks that need to be maintained by homeopathy teaching institutions, apart from maintaining a central registry of all homeopathy physicians in India.^[3]

In 2007, the Union Health Ministry set up the 'National Council for Clinical Establishments' for "determine minimum standards" for clinical establishments. A CCH representative is also a formal member of this National Council.^[5]

In October 2016, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested the CCH's chief, Ramjee Singh and another man in relation to the alleged collection of money to provide a favorable report that would allow regulatory approval.^[6]

The council regulates the Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (B.H.M.S.). It is a graduate degree awarded after five and a half years' study, including one-year internship.^[7]

Regulation and prevalence of homeopathy Alternative medicine

Homeopathy is fairly common in some countries while being uncommon in others. In some countries, there are no specific legal regulations concerning the use of homeopathy, while in others, licenses or degrees in conventional medicine from accredited universities are required.

The Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy is purposed with developing education, research and propagation of indigenous alternative medicine systems in India. As per a recent notification published in the Gazette of India on 13 April 2021, the Ministry of AYUSH, will now be known as the Ministry of Ayush. The Ministry of Ayush includes the seven traditional systems of healthcare.

National Institute of Homeopathy (NIH) is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH), Government of India. It conducts the BHMS, MD (Homeopathy) and PhD (Homeopathy) courses in Homeopathy. The Institute has a 250-bed hospital, with 10 for surgery and 10 for maternity cases.

Pratap Chandra Memorial Homoeopathic Hospital & College (PCMHHC) is the Homoeopathic medical college and hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. The college was established in 1926 by the late Dr. Jitendra Nath Majumder, in order to commemorate the name of his illustrious father, the late Dr. Pratap Chandra Majumder, who was one of the pioneers of Homoeopathy in India and popularised Homoeopathy in West Bengal. It is the second oldest Homeopathic Institution in India as well Asia.

Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) is a statutory body under Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, set up in 1971 under the Indian Medicine Central Council Act, which was passed in 1970. It is one of the Professional councils under University Grants Commission (UGC) to monitor higher education in Indian systems of medicine, including Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Sowa-Rigpa.

Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine or CRIUM Hyderabad, established in December 1971, is an Indian Government sponsored Unani medicine research center and out patient clinic located in Hyderabad, India. The institute was upgraded to National Research Institute of Unani Medicine for Skin Disorders (NRIUMSD), by Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State (IC) for AYUSH in November 2019. The Institute is well known for its successful treatment in skin condition called Vitiligo, perphaps it has treated more than 1.5 lakh patients of Vitiligo alone.

Midnapore Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital (MHMC&H) is a homeopathic medical college and hospital in Midnapore, West Bengal, India. This college was established on 3 December 1945. It is one of the oldest running homeopathic institutions in India. It offers the Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) degree course. The standard entry-to-practice degree in modern medicine in India is the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Among Modern Medicine, Alternative System of Medicine in India Such as Ayurveda (BAMS), Unani (BUMS), Siddha(BSMS), Homeopathy (BHMS). MBBS a credential earned upon completion of a five-and-a-half-year undergraduate program. The curriculum is divided into one year of preclinical studies in general science subjects and three and a half years of paraclinical and clinical studies, followed by a one-year clinical internship. Before beginning the internship, students are required to pass several examinations, the final one of which is conducted in two parts. Graduate education in medical specialties typically takes three additional years of study after the MBBS and concludes with the award of the Master of Surgery or Doctor of Medicine(MD). Postgraduate diplomas in medical specializations may also be awarded upon the completion of two-year training programs.
