Chang Chen (born 14 October 1976) is a Taiwanese actor. He is best known for his roles in A Brighter Summer Day (1991), Happy Together (1997), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Three Times (2005), Brotherhood of Blades (2014), The Assassin (2015) and The Soul (2021). For his performance in The Soul, he won Best Leading Actor prize at the 58th Golden Horse Awards.
Chang started his film career at a young age. He was then selected by a Taiwanese film director Edward Yang to be the protagonist of a four-hour-long critically acclaimed film A Brighter Summer Day , [1] which won the Special Jury Prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival. After the first film, he took a part-time job at a film company and worked there for two years until he graduated from high school. [2]
One of the earliest films Chang acted in was Wong Kar-wai's Happy Together (1997). He rose to fame for his role as "Dark Cloud" in the 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , directed by Ang Lee. [1] He also featured in Wong Kar-wai's 2046 (2004). [3]
Chang then co-starred with Shu Qi in Hou Hsiao-hsien's Three Times (2005), [4] which competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival and won Golden Horse accolades for Outstanding Taiwanese Film of the Year, among other awards. For his performance in that film, Chang was also nominated for Best Leading Actor at the 42nd Golden Horse Awards.
In 2006, Chang was nominated for the Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actor for his role in The Go Master , a dramatisation of the life of the Go master Wu Qingyuan. The following year, Chang made his Korean debut in Kim Ki-duk's Breath , which competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. [5] [6]
Chang then starred in the historical war epic Red Cliff (2008-2009), portraying the warlord Sun Quan. He was nominated at the Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Supporting Actor. [7] He next starred in the 2012 historical epic The Last Supper directed by Lu Chuan and the 2013 kungfu epic The Grandmaster by Wong Kar-wai. [8]
In 2014, Chang headlined the wuxia film Brotherhood of Blades , which won commercial success and critical acclaim. He earned his third nomination for Best Actor in the Golden Horse Awards. [9]
Chang reunited with Three Times director Hou Hsiao-hsien and co-star Shu Qi in the 2015 wuxia film The Assassin , which competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. [4]
In 2017, Chang played the title character in the action film Mr. Long , which was selected to compete for the Golden Bear in the main competition section of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. [10] The same year, he returned for the second installment of Brotherhood of Blades film. [11]
Chang was invited to serve as a jury member at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. [12]
In 2021, Chang played Dr. Wellington Yueh in Denis Villeneuve's epic science fiction film Dune . [13] which premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. [14] In the same year, he won Best Leading Actor at the 58th Golden Horse Awards for his performance in the mystery film The Soul , which was his first Golden Horse Award after being nominated three times without winning. Chang was invited to serve as a jury member at the 59th Golden Horse Awards in 2022. [16]
In June 2023, Chang was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. [17]
Chang was born in Taipei, Taiwan. His father Chang Kuo-chu and his brother Hans Chang are also actors. [18] [19]

Gong Li is a Chinese actress. Regarded as one of the best actresses in China today, she is known for her versatility and naturalistic performance. She starred in three of the four Chinese-language films that have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
The Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and Taipei Golden Horse Awards are a film festival and associated awards ceremony held annually in Taiwan. The festival and ceremony were founded in 1962 by the Government Information Office of the Republic of China (ROC) in Taiwan and is now run as an independent organisation. Hou Hsiao-hsien is a retired Mainland Chinese-born Taiwanese film director, screenwriter, producer and actor. He is a leading figure in world cinema and in Taiwan's New Wave cinema movement. He won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1989 for his film A City of Sadness (1989), and the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015 for The Assassin (2015). Other highly regarded works of his include The Puppetmaster (1993) and Flowers of Shanghai (1998).
Edward Yang was a Taiwanese filmmaker. He rose to prominence as a pioneer in the Taiwanese New Wave of the 1980s, alongside fellow auteurs Hou Hsiao-hsien and Tsai Ming-liang. Yang was regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of Taiwanese cinema. He won the Best Director Award at Cannes for his 2000 film Yi Yi.

Brotherhood of Blades II: The Infernal Battlefield is a 2017 Chinese wuxia film directed by Lu Yang. It is a prequel to the 2014 film Brotherhood of Blades. Set in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), the story follows Shen Lian, captain of the embroidered uniform guard the imperial secret police of the court, as he searches for the truth behind a conspiracy that framed him, his colleague Pei Lun and a young woman named Bei Zhai. Starring Chang Chen, Yang Mi and Zhang Yi, the film was released in China on 19 July 2017.
Lee Hong-chi is a Taiwanese actor. He is best known for starring in the 2015 film Thanatos, Drunk, for which he was named Best New Performer at the 52nd Golden Horse Awards. In 2023, he won Lion of the Future Award at the 80th Venice International Film Festival for his film directorial debut, Love Is a Gun.
The Falls is a 2021 Taiwanese drama film directed by Chung Mong-hong and written by Chung and Chang Yao-sheng. It stars Alyssa Chia and Gingle Wang, with Sung Shao-ching, Liu Liang-tso, Lee Lee-zen, Yang Li-yin, Waa Wei, and Chen Yi-wen in supporting roles. It follows a mother and daughter who, after having to quarantine together during COVID-19, are forced to confront their personal obstacles and relationship tensions.
The 59th Golden Horse Awards was held on November 19, 2022, at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. Organized by the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee, the awards honored the best in Chinese-language films of 2021 and 2022. Nominations were announced on September 27, 2022. Despite receiving the warning from Chinese authorities, Hong Kong action thriller Limbo led the nominations with 14, while Taiwanese films Incantation and Coo-Coo 043 each received 13 nominations.
