Charleston View, formally known as Calvada Springs, is an unincorporated community in Inyo County, California. [2] The Charleston View CDP had a population of 45 in the 2020 census. [3]
The former name is a portmanteau of California and Nevada. [4]
When the people of Charleston View refer to themselves (known as a demonym), they frequently use Charlestonian.
Inyo County defines the Charleston view planning area as 67.875 square miles, [5] which is bigger than the census CDP for Charleston View. Defined as 0.748 square miles. [3] Within the Planning area, the 2020 Census shows that within Census Tract 8, Blocks 1176-1279, the population is 75. [6]
In 2005, Housing Developers proposed to The Inyo county Board of Supervisors to build 65,000 housing units in Charleston View. [7] This development was greeted with backlash by residents from Neighboring Pahrump, NV, whose main concern was that such development would deplete the ground water [8] in the Pahrump Valley.
In 2009, Housing Developers proposed a scaled backed plan that would allow a total population of 40 thousand. [9]
In 2012, BrightSource Energy proposed to the California Energy Commission, to build the Hidden Hills Solar Electric Generating System Project in Charleston View, [10] but was withdrawn in 2015 [11] due to concerns over the effects on wildlife, groundwater, cultural and historical resources in the area. Due to its remote location, the economy of Charleston View is limited. Most revolves around the cultivation of marijuana. [32] [33] [34]
In 2021, Inyo County approved the construction of light industrial building, that would allow for the processing and distribution of marijuana for cultivators in Charleston View and outlying communities in southeastern inyo county. [35]
A major attraction for religious people in Charleston View is the St. Thérèse Mission. Which is a Catholic church, administered by the Diocese of Fresno. It was built as a way to provide metro Las Vegas a Catholic cemetery after business tycoon Rafael Dizon Jr wanted to honor Saint Therese after his recovery from cancer. [36]
In the state legislature, Charleston View is in the 8th Senate District , represented by Democrat Angelique Ashby, [37] and the 26th Assembly District , represented by Democrat Evan Low. [38]
Federally, Charleston View is in California's 8th congressional district , represented by Democrat John Garamendi. [39]
Law enforcement is provided by Inyo County Sherrif's department. Types of crime in Charleston view normally deal with unpermitted Marijuana cultivation. [40]
Fire Protection is provided by Southern Inyo Fire Protection District. [41] A fire station is planned to reduce response times within Charleston View. [42] [43]
Inyo County is a county in the eastern central part of the U.S. state of California, located between the Sierra Nevada and the state of Nevada. In the 2020 census, the population was 19,016. The county seat is Independence. Inyo County is on the east side of the Sierra Nevada and southeast of Yosemite National Park in Central California. It contains the Owens River Valley; it is flanked to the west by the Sierra Nevada and to the east by the White Mountains and the Inyo Mountains. With an area of 10,192 square miles (26,400 km2), Inyo is the second-largest county by area in California, after San Bernardino County. Almost half of that area is within Death Valley National Park. However, with a population density of 1.8 people per square mile, it also has the second-lowest population density in California, after Alpine County.
