Closer to the Ground is a 2018 studio album by the Fred Frith Trio, a San Francisco Bay Area based experimental music and free improvising group featuring Fred Frith, Jason Hoopes and Jordan Glenn. It is their second album and was recorded in Oakland, California in January 2018, and released in September 2018 by Intakt Records in Switzerland. It follows on from their first album, Another Day in Fucking Paradise that was released in June 2016.

In a review in DownBeat magazine, music critic Peter Margasak described Frith's ensemble as "a scrappy improvising trio" who "deftly" revisit many of Frith's musical endeavors in "a gritty, unified attack". [1] He wrote that on Closer to the Ground the improvisations are "groove-oriented" and have their roots in rock music. Melodies surface occasionally, but the trio focuses on "exploring the nexus of groove and mood" without remaining in one place for too long. [1]

Andy Robson wrote in the British monthly, Jazzwise that Closer to the Ground is "nearer to jazz heaven". [2] He complimented Frith's "discipline and control", saying that there are no fillers, licks are not repeated. Robson also praised Hoopes' "fascinating foil" to Frith's guitar, and in particular Glenn's "colours, accents and pared-down patterns ... that underwrite this odyssey". [2]

Reviewing the album for the German radio station WDR 3, Karl Lippegaus said it picks up from where their first album left off. The trio's spontaneous arrangements lead to "chain reactions" (Kettenreaktionen), and while on the surface Closer to the Ground appears to be similar to their debut album, it turns out to be quite different with its tangle of "complex soundscapes" (komplexen Soundscapes). [3]

Writing on the website In On The Corner, Kevin Coultas described the Fred Frith Trio as one of Frith's "most superlative" bands since Henry Cow. [4] He complimented the rhythm section of Hoopes and Glenn, saying that they "lay down metronomic and/or shifting grooves" that produce "sunset-like colors on which Frith eviscerates and/or gently highlights with an array of engaging tremolo and reverberant effects". [4] Coultas praised Intakt Records for producing "such a vital statement from a singular artist and his inventive crew". [4]

Jeremy Webster "Fred" Frith is an English multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser. Probably best known for his guitar work, Frith first came to attention as a founding member of the English avant-rock group Henry Cow. He was also a member of the groups Art Bears, Massacre, and Skeleton Crew. In 1986 he co-founded the pioneering computer network music ensemble "The Hub". He is also known for his recorded performances of music by Henry Cowell, Luc Ferrari, and John Zorn. He has received commissions from the Berkeley Symphony, the Rova Saxophone Quartet, the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio, the Gerbode Foundation, the Phonos Foundation and the Creative Work Fund. His recent music includes the poly-rhythm installation "Talking Drum", the "Inventions" series for computers and interactive performers, and the radio performance "Transmissions" series, with composer Guillermo Galindo.

Sylvie Courvoisier is a composer, pianist, improviser and bandleader. She was born and raised in Lausanne, Switzerland, and has been a resident of New York City since 1998. She won Germany’s International Jazz Piano Prize in 2022 and was named Pianist of the Year for 2023 in the international critics poll of Spanish jazz publication El Intruso. NPR’s Kevin Whitehead has encapsulated the distinctive character of Courvoisier’s art this way: “Some pianists approach the instrument like it’s a cathedral. Sylvie Courvoisier treats it like a playground.”

Maybe Monday is an American experimental electroacoustic improvisation music ensemble comprising guitarist Fred Frith, koto player Miya Masaoka and saxophonist Larry Ochs. The trio was formed in San Francisco in March 1997 when they performed in a concert at the Great American Music Hall. They have since toured the United States, Canada and Europe, and released three albums between 1999 and 2008.
