Cowirra is a locality in the Murraylands region of South Australia. It is on the left (east) bank of the Murray River, opposite Mannum.
Much of the river frontage is low-lying flats, laid out as long narrow irrigated paddocks stretching between the rising ground (or low cliffs) and the river. Cowirra includes the eastern landing points of the Mannum ferries and the area known as Mannum East. The higher ground is used for a variety of farming including sheep, grain, beef cattle and potatoes.
Downstream of the ferry landing is a separate locality named Bolto consisting only of shacks near the river bank.
The township of Cowirra was laid out and named in 1901. [3] Ten quarter-acre blocks sold for an average of 5 shillings above the reserve price of £2 10/ in April 1907. [4] The locality boundaries formalised in 2003. [2]
The Cowirra Swamp was drained in 1919 to be set out for controlled irrigation. [5] Work had commenced in 1916, but the flood of 1917 had damaged the unfinished embankments leading to fresh inundation. [6] The reclaimed swamps were then available for soldier settlement following World War I. [7]
Murray Bridge is a city in the Australian state of South Australia, located 76 kilometres (47 mi) east-southeast of the state's capital city, Adelaide, and 77 kilometres (48 mi) north of the town of Meningie. Cadell is a town and locality situated near the north western edge of South Australia's Riverland on the inside of the large southward bend in the Murray River. It is named after Captain Francis Cadell, a pioneer of steam-powered navigation on the Murray River. The town of Cadell was surveyed in 1919 and named in 1920. It is slightly upstream of the earlier failed village settlement of New Era, however what is now the Cadell Irrigation Area is the same as was previously the New Era irrigation area.
William Richard Randell "Captain Randell", was an Australian politician and pioneer born in Devon, England, who emigrated to the newly founded colony of South Australia in 1837 with his family. He was a pioneer of the riverboat industry on the River Murray and represented the Electoral district of Gumeracha in the South Australian House of Assembly from 1893 to 1899.
Swan Reach is a river port in South Australia 127 km north-east of Adelaide on the Murray River between Blanchetown and Mannum in South Australia. It is on the left bank of the river. The Swan Reach Ferry is a cable ferry crossing operated by the state government as part of the state's road network. Swan Reach, with all parts below Lock #1, is also one of the lowest parts of the river. It is currently (2009–2010) about 1.5 metres below its normal level. At the 2016 census, Swan Reach had a population of 283.
Nildottie is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the east side of the Murray River about 99 kilometres (62 mi) east of the state capital of Adelaide and about 40 kilometres (25 mi) north-east of the municipal seat in Mannum.
The Wymah Ferry is a cable ferry across the upper reach of Lake Hume, on the Murray River and on the border between the Australian states of New South Wales and Victoria. The ferry crosses from the community of Wymah on the New South Wales side of the river, to Granya, and is approximately 35 kilometres (22 mi) east of Albury.
Mannum is a historic town on the west bank of the Murray River in South Australia, 84 kilometres (52 mi) east of Adelaide. At the 2016 census, the urban area of Mannum had a population of 2,398. Mannum is the seat of the Mid Murray Council, and is situated in the state electoral district of Hammond and the federal Division of Barker.

Bowhill is a locality in South Australia. A settlement is located inside a bend on the left (eastern/southern) bank of the Murray River between Mannum and Swan Reach. It is predominantly shacks built facing the river bank. The settlement is in the Mid Murray Council area, but most of the locality is located away from the river and within in the District Council of Karoonda East Murray, including the Lowan Conservation Park.
Purnong or Purnong Landing is the location of a cable ferry across the Murray River upstream of Mannum. The town is on the cliffs above the left (eastern) bank of the river. It is 32 kilometres (20 mi) by road from Mannum on the west side of the Murray, and 40 kilometres (25 mi) on the east side.
The District Council of Mannum was a local government area in South Australia from 1877 to 1997, centring on the town of Mannum.
Pompoota is a locality in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia, on the east (left) bank of the Murray River, downstream of Mannum. It has shacks and irrigated floodplains near the river, and dryland farming on the higher ground away from the river. The locality of Burdett wraps around the eastern side of Pompoota, with a short stretch of river frontage south (downstream) of Pompoota.
Holder is a locality in the Riverland region of South Australia. It lies on the inside of a bend in the Murray River east (upstream) of Waikerie. Holder is bounded on the south side by the Sturt Highway and includes the Waikerie Airport and Maize Island Lagoon Conservation Park. The locality includes low-lying wetlands near river level and rising and higher ground up to the level at the top of the Murray cliffs where the airport and highway are. The sloping and higher ground is used for vineyards and fruit orchards, irrigated from the river. The school opened in 1925 and closed in 1991.
Pyap is a locality in the Riverland region of South Australia. It is on the left (south) bank of the Murray River about 7 km downstream from Loxton. It includes both flat land near the river and higher land away from it. The environment is dry, so vineyards and orchards are irrigated from the river. It lies on the Kingston Road from Loxton, at the junction with the Stott Highway towards Swan Reach.
