Shedrick Thompson was an African-American man from Fauquier County, Virginia, who was accused of crimes against his white employers in 1932. He was later found dead, hanging from a tree. Upon discovery, his body was mutilated and burned. While an official verdict declared it a suicide, others maintained that he was lynched. He was 39.
Shedrick Thompson (also called "Shadrack", "Shadrock" and "Shadric" in some newspaper articles) grew up in Fauquier, the third of nine children born to Fannie and Merrington Thompson. In 1917 "he was drafted into the Army, trained in Arkansas, and shipped to France to serve with other 'colored' troops." He was honorably discharged, returned to Fauquier, married, and resumed his former life as a farmhand. [1]
His white next-door neighbors and employers, Henry and Mamie Baxley, claimed that on July 17, 1932, Thompson attacked them. They alleged Thompson beat Henry unconscious and took Mamie to a nearby field where he raped and beat her, as well as stealing her rings. [2] Both Baxleys survived. Mrs. Baxley "said she believed the man harbored a grudge against her and her husband who had once given information that resulted in Thompson's imprisonment". [3]
Thompson fled into the mountains. The biggest manhunt in the county's history was launched, with posses, bloodhounds, [3] a $250 reward announced on a flyer, and hundreds of volunteers, lasting for weeks. Two months later, his "badly decomposed" body was discovered hanging from a tree. [4] "[A]uthorities expressed the opinion that Thompson had probably been dead five or six weeks." [5]
Before the deputy sheriff arrived, a mob assembled and burned the body. [1] They prevented the official from putting out the flames, sticking a pistol in his ribs and saying "let it burn". They removed his teeth as souvenirs. [6]
From the beginning, local and state officials denied that a lynching had taken place. In 1928, then-Governor Harry F. Byrd Sr. signed into law "the first effective anti-lynching law", [7] : 21 the Virginia Anti-Lynching Law of 1928 (the Barron-Connor Act). Byrd was "the principal power behind the lynching act"; [7] : 29 he believed that lynchings hurt the state economically by discouraging investment, and was trying to show that since states could handle the issue, federal legislation was unnecessary. [7] (See Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill.) Byrd saw this law as a key achievement of his administration and claimed with pride that there had never been another lynching in Virginia. He had just been a candidate for the 1932 U.S. Presidential nomination, was close to Roosevelt, [8] was frequently mentioned as a possible cabinet appointee, [9] and would soon be appointed, then elected Senator from Virginia. "Byrd's ascension to the national political stage was based in part on his reputation as the architect of the nation's strictest anti-lynching law." [1]
Thus, local officials "resented" the NAACP's inclusion of Thompson in a list of 1932 lynchings, and "vigorously den[ied]" that he had been lynched. [10] According to the sheriff there had been no lynching in Fauquier County within his memory, [11] and it was an absolute case of suicide. [12]
Byrd became personally involved, writing and having his friends write the NAACP, insisting that there had not been a lynching. [1] The coroner "issued immediately a verdict of suicide," and said Thompson had committed suicide by putting a rope around his neck and jumping from an apple tree:
Why, it would be the simplest thing in the world. The tree had one limb running straight out about the size of my leg in diameter and another limb a bit higher running in almost the same direction. Thompson climbed the tree and sat out on the limb while he tied the slip noose around his neck, leaving about eighteen inches slack to break his neck in the fall. After fixing the knots the negro allowed himself to slip off the limb. That's all there was to it. [13]
(The Commonwealth Attorney said Thompson jumped off a pile of rocks he had made, so as to break his own neck. [14] ) As soon as the coroner's verdict was published, "rumors began to circulate stating that the negro had been lynched by the angry mob that had been scouring through Rattlesnake Mountain the week following the negro's alleged attack and alleged escape, armed with knives, picks, shotguns, ropes, and mowing blades. One rumor even stated the date the lynching occurred and gave the number in the lynching party as six men…" The coroner said he paid no attention to these rumors, which were "bare lies". [13]
A news story from nearby Martinsburg, West Virginia, where Thompson "at one time" resided, said that there was a bullet hole in his skull, and the body had been mutilated. [6] [15] Early reports said the body was burned before any law enforcement official arrived, [5] and as said above, the first sheriff's deputy to arrive was threatened with a gun so he could not put the flames out. [16] [17] Yet the coroner said that a sheriff's deputy inspected the body before it was burned, and the stomach and abdomen were in "perfect condition so far as any signs of mutilation or beating was concerned". [18] Furthermore, he said he had the skull in his possession...and after several examinations could find no sign of a bullet hole or any indication of rough treatment." [18]
"The authorities' presumption that the man took his own life is not generally believed." [15] Stories that Thompson had been hung by a posse "gained so much credence" that a grand jury was impaneled; it also held that Thompson had committed suicide. "This verdict, however, failed to quiet and 'hush up' the case; ...several [local citizens] admitted after finding the body, that they had taken part in Thompson's lynching two months before." [19]
As it was put by the Chicago Defender , an African-American newspaper, "'Suicide' Is Now Synonymous to 'Lynching' in Virginia". [20]
Retired Virginia reporter Jim Hall started investigating the Thompson case "because the official version of what happened...did not make sense" [21] "He checked military records of Thompson and Baxley, who both served in the First World War, property deeds and land records, newspaper accounts, and personal diaries." He interviewed family and neighbors of both the Baxleys and Thompson. He "was shocked, as he read through Byrd's papers at the University of Virginia...[and] came to believe Byrd was motivated to 'protect his reputation ... not to get to the bottom' of what happened to Thompson." [22] "The grand jury and the coroner...saw their job as protection of the status quo...and they did their duty to protect and shield the status quo from all the implications of a lynching verdict'". [23] "Suicide didn't make any sense to anyone." [24]
Hall's research led to a 2016 book, The Last Lynching in Northern Virginia: Seeking Truth at Rattlesnake Mountain (2016). [2]
As a result of Hall's work, the Equal Justice Initiative added Thompson's name to its database of American lynchings. His name is one of the two names inscribed on Fauquier County's coffin-shaped pillar at the National Lynching Memorial (The National Memorial for Peace and Justice). [25]
He calls the lynching of Shedrick Thompson "an open wound" in Fauquier County. [26]
Accompanying Hall during his on-site research and interviews was Tom Davenport, an independent filmmaker from Fauquier County. "Hall asked the questions, and Davenport filmed the interview over Hall's shoulder." [27]
The result was a 59-minute documentary, The Other Side of Eden: Stories of a Virginia Lynching (2018), in which 5 separate people asserted that Thompson had been lynched, corroborating the stories of his castration and burning, and other torture. [28] [29]

Founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, the institution was renamed Madison College in 1938 in honor of President James Madison and then James Madison University in 1977. It is situated in the Shenandoah Valley, just west of Massanutten Mountain.
Harrisonburg is an independent city in the Shenandoah Valley region of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. It is also the county seat of the surrounding Rockingham County, although the two are separate jurisdictions. At the 2020 census, the population was 51,814. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Harrisonburg with Rockingham County for statistical purposes into the Harrisonburg, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had an estimated population of 126,562 in 2011.

Warrenton is a town in Fauquier County, Virginia, of which it is the seat of government. The population was 10,057 as of the 2020 census, an increase from 9,611 at the 2010 census and 6,670 at the 2000 census. The estimated population in July 2021 was 10,109. It is at the junction of U.S. Route 15, U.S. Route 17, U.S. Route 29, and U.S. Route 211. The town is in the Piedmont region of Virginia just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The well-known Airlie Conference Center is 3 miles (5 km) north of Warrenton, and the historic Vint Hill Farms military facility is 9 miles (14 km) east. Fauquier Hospital is located in the town. Surrounded by Virginia wine and horse country, Warrenton is a popular destination outside Washington, D.C.
James Byrd Jr. was a Black American man who was murdered by three white men, two of whom were avowed white supremacists, in Jasper, Texas, on June 7, 1998. Shawn Berry, Lawrence Brewer, and John King dragged him for three miles behind a Ford pickup truck along an asphalt road. Byrd, who remained conscious for much of his ordeal, was killed about halfway through the dragging when his body hit the edge of a culvert, severing his right arm and head. The murderers drove on for another 1+1⁄2 miles before dumping his torso in front of a black cemetery.
Turner Ashby Jr. was an American officer. He was a Confederate cavalry commander in the American Civil War.
Harry Flood Byrd Sr. was an American newspaper publisher, politician, and leader of the Democratic Party in Virginia for four decades as head of a political faction that became known as the Byrd Organization. Byrd served as Virginia's governor from 1926 until 1930, then represented the state as a U.S. Senator from 1933 until 1965. He came to lead the conservative coalition in the Senate, and opposed President Franklin D. Roosevelt, largely blocking most liberal legislation after 1937. His son Harry Jr. succeeded him as U.S. Senator, but ran as an Independent following the decline of the Byrd Organization.
Harry Flood Byrd Jr. was an American orchardist, newspaper publisher and politician. He served in the Senate of Virginia and then represented Virginia in the United States Senate, succeeding his father, Harry F. Byrd Sr. His public service spanned thirty-six years, while he was a publisher of several Virginia newspapers. After the decline of the Byrd Organization due to its massive resistance to racial integration of public schools, he abandoned the Democratic Party in 1970, citing concern about its leftward tilt. He rehabilitated his political career, becoming the first independent in the history of the U.S. Senate to be elected by a majority of the popular vote.
Colgate Whitehead Darden Jr. was an American lawyer and Democratic politician aligned with the Byrd Organization who served as U.S. Representative from Virginia, the 54th Governor of Virginia (1942–46), Chancellor of the College of William and Mary (1946–47) and the third President of the University of Virginia (1947–59). The Darden Graduate School of Business Administration of the University of Virginia was named for him.
John Otho Marsh Jr. was an American politician and an adjunct professor at George Mason University School of Law. He served as the United States Secretary of the Army from 1981 to 1989, and as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Virginia from 1963 to 1971.
The Clinton body count is a conspiracy theory that baselessly asserts former U.S. President Bill Clinton and his wife, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, have secretly had their political opponents murdered, totaling as many as 50 or more. Such allegations have been circulated since at least 1994, when a film called The Clinton Chronicles, produced by Larry Nichols and promoted by Rev. Jerry Falwell, accused Bill Clinton of multiple crimes including murder. Additional promulgators of the conspiracy include Newsmax publisher Christopher Ruddy, congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, and others.

Raymond Arthur Byrd was an African-American farmhand who was lynched by a mob in Wythe County, Virginia on August 15, 1926.
The Newberry Six lynchings took place in Newberry, Alachua County, Florida, on August 18, 1916.
John Henry James was an African-American man who was lynched near Charlottesville, Virginia on July 12, 1898, for having allegedly raped a white woman. James had no known family in the area, and had lived in Charlottesville for only five or six years. He was an ice cream seller; "nothing else is known of him."
James McHenry Jones was an American educator, school administrator, businessperson, and minister. Jones was the third principal of the West Virginia Colored Institute from 1898 until 1909 and is considered by West Virginia State as the institution's third president.
The Richard Dickerson lynching happened in Springfield, Ohio on 7 March 1904. Dickerson aka Richard Dollon was an African American described as an "itinerant Kentuckian" who was being held for the fatal shooting of white Police Sergeant Charles B. Collis. The local authorities were unable to protect Dickerson from a large mob of angry white people who broke into the jail and seized and lynched him. The next night there were riots and attacks on black-owned businesses.
Eppa Hunton III, known as Eppa Hunton Jr., was an American lawyer. The son of General Eppa Hunton, he experienced a turbulent childhood with the American Civil War and Reconstruction as its backdrop. After graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law, he practiced law with his father in Warrenton, Virginia, for a number of years before moving south to Richmond in 1901 to help found the law firm Munford, Hunton, Williams & Anderson.
