The descendants of Charles II of England , Stuart monarch of the Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland and claimant to the Kingdom of France, are numerous; lines from his many illegitimate children exist to this day. Although Charles's wife Catherine of Braganza was barren, he stayed with her but had numerous mistresses. Some of Charles's illegitimate children were born before his marriage. This article deals with the most senior figures who were descended from Charles's illegitimate sons; the names of his daughters are also mentioned.
Although some of Charles's children made claims to the throne, most notably his first son James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, their illegitimacy meant that after Charles's death, his brother James, Duke of York, became king. Over the centuries, several of Charles's descendants have made names for themselves, including Augustus FitzRoy, 3rd Duke of Grafton, who became Prime Minister of Great Britain, the cricket pioneer Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond, and the parliamentary reformer Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond.
Diana, Princess of Wales, was descended from two of Charles's illegitimate sons; Henry Fitzroy, 1st Duke of Grafton, and Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond. This means that her son, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, will become the first descendant of Charles II to occupy the British throne, if he succeeds as expected.
The illegitimate sons of King Charles II were as follows, in order of birth, with mother's name:
Catherine Pegge and Charles II also had a daughter together called Catherine FitzCharles but she died young or became a nun.

Barbara Palmer, 1st Duchess of Cleveland, was perhaps the most notorious of Charles's mistresses. Some of the children claimed by Palmer as belonging to Charles are in doubt. Anne Lennard, Countess of Sussex, was claimed to be Charles's daughter and he recognised her, though some sources regard Roger Palmer as her father. Palmer claimed Lady Barbara FitzRoy was Charles's daughter, but he never recognised her and most sources consider John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, more likely. Palmer and Charles had another daughter together, Charlotte Lee, Countess of Lichfield, and three sons who were recognised by Charles, their lines are featured below.

With Moll Davis Charles had one daughter, Lady Mary Tudor. Mary went on to marry Edward Radclyffe, 2nd Earl of Derwentwater. Very soon after his death she married Henry Graham, and within a few months of his death she married James Rooke.
Lady Mary Tudor's sons James Radclyffe, 3rd Earl of Derwentwater (1689–1716) and Charles Radclyffe (1693–1746) were both notable Jacobites and both were executed for treason following the Risings of 1715 and 1745 respectively.
Lady Diana Spencer (later the Princess of Wales) is a descendant of Charles II, through two of his illegitimate sons. Diana married The Prince of Wales in 1981 and had two sons, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. Currently, the Duke is 2nd in the line of Succession, his sons and daughter, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are 3rd, 4th, and 5th, while Prince Harry is 6th in line. If any of them succeed to the British throne, they will be the first descendants of Charles II of England to accede to the throne. The House of Stuart, originally Stewart, was a European royal house of Scotland, with historical connections to Brittany. The family name itself comes from the office of High Steward of Scotland, which had been held by the family scion Walter fitz Alan. The name "Stewart" and variations had become established as a family name by the time of his grandson, Walter Stewart. The first monarch of the Stewart line was Robert II whose descendants were kings and queens of Scotland from 1371 until the union with England in 1707. Mary, Queen of Scots was brought up in France where she adopted the French spelling of the name Stuart.
Duke of Grafton is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1675 by Charles II of England for Henry FitzRoy, his second illegitimate son by the Duchess of Cleveland. The most famous duke was probably Augustus FitzRoy, 3rd Duke of Grafton, who served as prime minister in the 1760s.
Duke of St Albans is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1684 for Charles Beauclerk, 1st Earl of Burford, then fourteen years old. King Charles II had accepted that Burford was his illegitimate son by Eleanor Gwynn, an actress, and awarded him the Dukedom just as he had awarded the Dukedoms of Monmouth, Southampton, Grafton, Northumberland and Richmond and Lennox on his other illegitimate sons.
Baron Arlington is a title in the Peerage of England which was created, on 14 March 1665, for Sir Henry Bennet, younger brother of John Bennet, 1st Baron Ossulston, with a special remainder allowing it to pass to both male and female descendants, rather than only heirs male, as was customary with most peerages. In 1672, he was made Earl of Arlington and Viscount Thetford, and was regranted the title of Baron Arlington, with the same special remainder. Its territorial designation is the birthplace of its first holder Harlington, London, which was also known as Arlington.
Viscount Daventry, of Daventry in the County of Northampton, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 6 May 1943 for Muriel FitzRoy, in honour of her late husband, the Hon. Edward FitzRoy, Speaker of the House of Commons from 1928 until his death in 1943. The first Viscountess was the sister of Frank Douglas-Pennant, 5th Baron Penrhyn, whilst Edward FitzRoy was the second son of Charles FitzRoy, 3rd Baron Southampton, and a male-line descendant of Charles FitzRoy, 2nd Duke of Grafton. Lady Daventry was succeeded by her eldest son, the second Viscount. He was a Captain in the Royal Navy. He was succeeded by his nephew, the third Viscount. His father had assumed the additional surname of Newdegate, which was that of his father-in-law. As of 2017 the title is held by his son, the fourth Viscount, who succeeded in 2000. As a male-line descendant of both the third Baron Southampton and the second Duke of Grafton, he is also in remainder to those peerages.

Clan Stewart is a Highland Scottish clan. The clan is recognised by Court of the Lord Lyon; however, it does not have a Clan Chief recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms. Because the clan has no chief it can be considered an armigerous clan; however, the Earls of Galloway are now considered to be the principal branch of this clan, and the crest and motto of The Earls of Galloway's arms are used in the Clan Stewart crest badge. The Court of the Lord Lyon recognises two other 'Stewart' clans, Clan Stuart of Bute and Clan Stewart of Appin. Clan Stuart of Bute is the only 'Stewart' clan at present which has a recognised chief.
A royal bastard was a common term for the illegitimate child of a reigning monarch. These children were considered to be born outside of marriage - either because the monarch had an extra-marital affair; or because the legitimacy of the monarch's marriage had been called into question.

He served during the War of the Austrian Succession, and was involved in the capture of the Spanish ship of the line, Princesa, a major prize in the war.
