Duck Bridge is a historic bridge in Danby, North Yorkshire, a village in England.
The structure, which was formerly known as Danby Castle Bridge, crosses the River Esk, half a mile north of Danby Castle. Its original date of construction is uncertain, but the Victoria County History suggests that it dates from the 14th century. [1] In 1717, the bridge was largely rebuilt by George Duck, for a payment of £10 7s 6d. It then gradually became known by Duck's name. [2] In 2008, the buttresses were rebuilt, and the road was resurfaced in tarmac, which proved controversial. [3] The bridge has been grade II* listed since 1969. [4]
The bridge is built of sandstone, and is hump-backed with a single round arch. The bridge has voussoirs, an arch ring, and peaked parapets with rounded coping. There are stepped abutments at the northwest and southeast corners, and large stepped end buttresses. [4] [5]
