Dwijen Bandyopadhyay (22 September 1949 – 27 September 2017 [1] ) was a veteran Bengali actor and theater personality from West Bengal, India. He worked onstage from the 1970s. Bandyopadhyay has also been a professor in the department of Drama at Rabindra Bharati University from 1996 to 2014.
Dwijen Bandyopadhyay has a degree in Chartered Accountancy and has been the Chief Accountant at Amrita Bazar Patrika for many years until the company closed down. He joined as a professor in the department of Drama at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata right after he came to the limelight through a popular Bengali comedy-cum-thriller series Abar Jakher Dhan. Later during the early 2000s he found ground in the acting industry through the TV serials Chuni Panna and Labonyer Sansar. [2] He acted in various movies and T.V. serials. Bandyopadhyay played in both intellectual and mainstream films along with continuing his work in the culture of Group theatre of Kolkata. [3] [4] [5] He performed in dramas like; Amitakshar, Ghora, Samabartan, Balidan, Abhimukh, Dashchakra, Mallabhumi, and Mushthijog, Gunadharer Asukh, Spardhabarna, Monoshchokhyu, Ainshiddho and Bhootnath. Bandyopadhyay constituted his own theatre group Samstab in 1982. [6] His last stage performance was on 1st January, 2016 of the play Bhootnath at Girish Manch after which he succumbed to a major nerve problem and several minor cerebral strokes.
In 1992 he received Paschim Banga Natya Akademi award for his acting in the drama named Balidan. [6]
Dwijen Bandyopadhyay had been suffering from a major nerve problem for a year and nine months. It affected his speech and the right part of the body causing him to be unable to walk normally. Because of this, he couldn't work onstage or onscreen leading him to suffer from immense depression. On 27 September 2017, Bandyopadhyay died of a massive heart attack at his residence at 2:00am in Kolkata at 68. [7] [5]

Shyamanand Jalan was a Kolkata-based Indian theatre director, and actor. In 2005, he directed his first and only film Eashwar Mime Co., which was an adaptation of Dibyendu Palit's story, Mukhabhinoy, by Vijay Tendulkar.

Paschim Banga Natya Akademi is a learned society for drama and theatre in West Bengal, India. Established on 26 September 1987, it is a wing of the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs, Government of West Bengal. The aim of this society is to develop skill and expertise, to document and archive the history of theater of Bengal, to disseminate information, to understand theories, to promote and project significant creativity in the field.

In 1989 he directed the re-creation of the classic play Nabanna (1948). He was the President of the PashchimBanga Natya Akademi from 2006 till his death in 2010. Kumar Roy was also Professor of Drama at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata and Visiting Professor at Sangeet Bhavan, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan.

For playing this role, he was picked up as the Filmfare Awards East for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 2017. In 2019, He got his first Best Actor Award for the role of Nikhilesh Chowdhury from the movie Ghawre Bairey Aaj which was immensely praised by critics and audiences. He made his directorial debut through the Bengali crime drama web series Mandaar, which is inspired by William Shakespeare's Macbeth. His second direction Ballavpurer Roopkotha was released on 21 October 2022.
