The Fairlee Railroad Depot is a historic railroad station at 320 United States Route 5 in the village center of Fairlee, Vermont. Built in 1848 and used in active service until 1972, it is one of the few surviving first-generation railroad station buildings in the state. Now used as a retail space, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. [1]
The former Fairlee Railroad Depot stands on the south side of US 5, adjacent to the now-disused railroad tracks that run between US 5 and the Connecticut River. It is accessed by a gravel drive in the shape of a broad U, with parking in front. It is a single-story rectangular wood-frame structure, with a gabled roof and clapboarded exterior. The street-facing facade has an irregular plan, with a number of doors and windows of differing sizes, reflecting a variety of historic functions. The building originally housed a lobby and passenger waiting area, occupying about one-third of its space, with the remainder used as a freight storage area. [2]
The station was probably built in 1848 by the Connecticut and Passumpsic Rivers Railroad Company, chartered in 1843 to provide railroad service along the Connecticut River north of White River Junction. The station's precise construction date is not known due to a lack of documentation; the assessment of its age is based on architectural analysis. About 1870, the freight area was enlarged by construction of an addition, and the building's lobby and office area was remodeled around the turn of the 20th century. It is also likely that a bay window bumping out on the track side from the agent's office was added around the same time. Operation of the rail line was taken over by the Boston and Main Corporation in 1870, and it remained in service until 1972. [2]
New London Union Station is a historic regional rail station located in New London, Connecticut, United States. Located on the Northeast Corridor, the busiest railway in the United States, it is the primary railroad station in southeastern Connecticut. Union Station is a station stop for most of Amtrak's Northeast Regional trains and a small number of high-speed Acela Express trains. Certain CTrail Shore Line East commuter rail trains also stop at New London, making it the eastern terminus of commuter rail in Connecticut.
Bellows Falls station is an Amtrak intercity rail station located in the Bellows Falls village of Rockingham, Vermont, United States. The station is served by the single daily round trip of the Washington, D.C.–St. Albans Vermonter. It has a single side platform adjacent to the single track of the New England Central Railroad mainline.
Randolph is an Amtrak train station in Randolph, Vermont, United States. The only train that serves the station is the Vermonter, which operates between St. Albans, Vermont and Washington, D.C. The station also contains a local restaurant. On the other side of the tracks is the depot for a private bus company, Randolph Stagecoach Transportation, essentially creating an unofficial intermodal transportation center. However, the schedules of the two systems are not aligned in any way.
The Hartford & New Haven Railroad Freight Depot is a historic building at 40 Mechanic Street in downtown Windsor, Connecticut, across the street from the equally historic Hartford & New Haven Railroad Depot. Built about 1870, it is a well-preserved example of a Gothic Revival freight depot. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It is now the home of the Windsor Arts Center, a non-profit place that exhibits the work of visual and performing artists.
White River Junction Historic District is a historic district in the unincorporated village of White River Junction, within the town of Hartford, Vermont. It was first listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and its boundaries were increased in 2002 and 2019. It originally encompassed the central portion of the village's business district, and was then expanded to include a broader array of resources.
Simsbury station is a former railroad station in the center of Simsbury, Connecticut. Built in 1875, it is a distinctive example of a railroad station with Italianate styling. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 26, 1976 as Simsbury Railroad Depot. Presently, it houses a restaurant, called "Plan B".
Western Gateway Heritage State Park is a history-focused Massachusetts state park in the city of North Adams managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Exhibits at the park, which is located in a former railyard, tell the story of the creation of the Hoosac Tunnel. The freight yard was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 as the Freight Yard Historic District.
Bardwell station was a historic train station at the city of Bardwell in the far western part of the U.S. state of Kentucky. Constructed in the late nineteenth century along the railroad's main line, it was the center of life for local residents and served as a significant maintenance site for the railroad. As a simple functional structure, the depot qualified for designation as a historic site in 1976, but it no longer stands.
The Contoocook Railroad Depot is located in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, United States, in the village of Contoocook. The depot was completed in 1849 as one of the first substantial railroad passenger stations west of Concord on the Concord and Claremont Railroad. The building is one of the best preserved of a small number of gable-roofed railroad stations surviving from the first decade of rail development in New Hampshire. The station exemplifies the pioneering period of rail development in the state.

The Sandown Depot is a former railroad station of the Boston and Maine Railroad in Sandown, New Hampshire. Built in 1873–74, it is the best-preserved of stations built by the Nashua and Rochester Railroad to survive, remaining relatively unaltered since its construction, and still at its original location. It is now a local history museum, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, and the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2011.
The Bennington Railroad Station is a historic former railroad depot at 150 Depot Street in downtown Bennington, Vermont. Built in 1897-98 by the Bennington and Rutland Railroad, it is the only Richardsonian Romanesque railroad station in the state of Vermont. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, and since then housed a restaurant, which closed in 2018. It now is an office space for MSK Engineering and Design and Goldstone Architecture.
The Depot Square Historic District encompasses the historic commercial business district of Randolph, Vermont. Developed in the mid-19th century around the facilities of the Central Vermont Railway, the area features a high concentration of well-preserved Second Empire and late Victorian commercial architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
The Ely Railroad Depot is a historic railroad station at Ely Road and Old Route 5 in Fairlee, Vermont. Built in 1900 by the Boston and Maine Railroad, it is a well-preserved rural station, designed to house the stationmaster as well as providing station facilities. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
The South Royalton Historic District encompasses the central portion of the village of South Royalton, Vermont. Now the town of Royalton's principal commercial center, it developed in the second half of the 19th century around the depot of the Vermont Central Railroad. The district includes fine examples of Greek Revival and Victorian architecture, and is home to the Vermont Law School. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
The Central Vermont Railroad Headquarters is a complex of railroad-related buildings and infrastructure in the city of St. Albans, Vermont. Developed between the 1860s and 1920s by the Central Vermont Railroad (CVR), the complex is the largest assemblage of railroad-related buildings in Vermont. Located between Catherine and Pine Streets on either side of Lake Street, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Many of the buildings are no longer used for railroad functions, but the former Central Vermont Railway Office now houses the offices of the New England Central Railroad, and the present Amtrak station uses a former CVR building.
The Rawlins station is a former train station in Rawlins, Wyoming. It was served by the Union Pacific Railroad from its 1901 construction to 1971, and Amtrak from 1971–1983 and 1991–1997. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, as the Union Pacific Railroad Depot.
The Johnson Railroad Depot was a historic former railroad station on Railroad Street in Johnson, Vermont. Built in 1887, it was an excellent example of Victorian railroad architecture, serving as a gateway for the town's industrial products to markets nationwide. Converted to commercial use after rail service was discontinued on the line, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It has since been demolished; a modern building stands where it used to.
The Chicago and West Michigan Railroad Charlevoix Station is a railroad depot located on Chicago Avenue in Charlevoix, Michigan. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
The Saline station, also known as the Detroit, Hillsdale and Indiana Railroad-Saline Depot, is a former railroad depot located at 402 North Ann Arbor Street in Saline, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. The building now houses the Saline Depot Museum.
