Grémio Sportivo Castilho (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: Grémiu Sportib' Kastidju, São Vicente Crioulo: Grémio Sportib'Castilh') is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Premier division of the Interisland League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo in the island of São Vicente and plays in the stadium with a capacity of 4,000 It is the team won the few cups before independence, the club never won any titles after independence.

The Alfabeto Unificado para a Escrita do Caboverdiano, commonly known as ALUPEC, is the alphabet that was officially recognized by the Cape Verdean government to write Cape Verdean Creole.

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Mindelo is a port city in the northern part of the island of São Vicente in Cape Verde. Mindelo is also the seat of the parish of Nossa Senhora da Luz, and the municipality of São Vicente. The city is home to 93% of the entire island's population. Mindelo is known for its colourful and animated carnival celebrations, with roots in Portuguese traditions.

Castilho relates to the name Castile or Castilian. Some people, mainly those outside the island think that the club is mainly named after the Portuguese name for "caste". The club is actually named after the Portuguese poet António Feliciano de Castilho. [1]

History

The club is the second oldest in the island of São Vicente founded on 18 February 1923. The club was founded by a group of students, being the first in Cape Verde to do so.

Early in 1973, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary. Later, the club won their first national (then mainly colonial) and only title in 1973, two years before the independence of Cape Verde, they defeated Vitória from Praia 1–0. [2] A year later, Castilho won their last regional title, in their last final match and competition under Portuguese rule, the club lost 2–1 to Sporting Clube da Praia. Castilho had the fourth least number of regional titles, in 1983, it was shared with Derby and a year later, Castilho's totals became fifth and last, from 2003 to 2010, their totals was shared with Batuque until 2010 when Castilho's totals became sixth and last, which is their performance since.

Sporting Clube da Praia

Sporting Clube da Praia, short form: Sporting Praia is a professional football club that plays in the Santiago South Premier Division in Cape Verde. It is based in the capital city of Praia in the island of Santiago, one of the unrelegated clubs in the south of the island along with three of the city's four historically mightiest clubs including Académica, Boavista and CD Travadores. Along with Académcia, Boavista, Desportivo, Travadores and Vitória, it is one of several teams that share the same ground, Estádio da Várzea, which has a capacity of 8,000. Sporting has won six championships since independence and a few before independence. The first title was won in the summer of 1962 before independence. Sporting recently won the 2017 national title. Its current president is Carlos Daniel Caetano and its manager is Lito, who once played for Portuguese clubs as footballer.

Batuque FC

Batuque Futebol Clube is a football club that plays in the São Vicente Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. Its current president is Jota who became first president in around the mid 2000s. Its nickname is Panteras (Panthers) which is also Portugal's Boavista F.C. nickname, the club is not an affiliate to that club. Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Derby and Mindelense.

In 1998, Castilho celebrated its 75th anniversary of its foundation of the club.

The regional competition became two tiers in 2008 and Castilho became the first club to be relegated into the regional Second Division where they remained until 2012, Castilho competed in the Premier Division once more and for the next two seasons.

Recently the club was relegated to the second island division in the 2013–14 season after being ranked 8th with 8 points and only 2 wins, they were second in the island second division during the 2014–15 season. The first match against Académica lost a nearly huge 6–1 in the first match and the second ended in a draw with 3 goals, thus Castilho is kept in the second division. Castilho achieved second place in the regional second division once more for 2016, the club faced Farense which was tied one apiece in the first match and Castilho lost 1-2 in the second match and again remains in the regional second division this season. After three seasons in that division, Castilho achieved first position in the regional Second Division and will return again to the regional Premier Division in the following season. [3] Also Castilho was to be the third participant into the 2017 Champion's Cup (or Trophy) and would have challenge the Premier Division winner CS Mindelense, the match did not took place.

CS Mindelense

Clube Sportivo Mindelense (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: KS Mindelensi, São Vicente Crioulo: KS Mindelense is a football club that plays in the Premier division of the Interisland League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo in the island of São Vicente. Mindelense is the oldest club in Cape Verde. It is the team won the most cups before and after independence especially in the 1950s and the 1970s with nine titles before independence and eleven after independence. Their first participation in the national division before independence was unofficially in 1938 and officially in 1954, Mindelense first appeared after independence in 1980. Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Batuque and Derby. Its current chairman is Daniel de Jesus. The club's nickname is Leões Encarnados or the Incarnated Lions. A nickname that is used less often is the Red Devils or the Diablos Vermelhos.

Castilho started the 2017-18 season with a 1-2 loss to the powerful Mindelense but Castilho remained in low position. Their next two rounds were successful with two straight wins and had the most goals scored in the region to date with six goals. Castilho lost their match to Derby 5-1 and had seven goals which became second alongside Batuque, on the opposites, Castilho conceded nine goals, the most in the region, worst than last placed Ribeira Bote. Castilo defeated Farense before a loss to Salamansa, then a win over Batuque at the 7th round, a back to back loss to Mindelense followed, then a back to back win over Ribeira Bote. A repeat of the loss, this one to Académica and was fifth place with 12 points shared with Farense, the worst they conceded 21 goals, the worst in the region. Castilho suffered an 0-3 loss and lost a position and etched themselves into the relegation zone and now conceded a total of 26, still the worst, also they had seven losses. Castilho scored 14 goals shared with Académica. Castilho lost 2-1 to Farense, they scored their next goal in three matches, their totals is fourth alone, the club slightly escaped that relegation zone.

Stadium

The club and plays in the Adérito Sena Stadium with a capacity of once served up to 4,000, now serves 5,000 after the renovation, it is named after one of the first players of the club Adérito Carvalho da Sena (1905–1970). Mindelense, Batuque, FC Derby, Académica do Mindelo and Amarante are the other major clubs of the city and the island playing in that stadium.

Estádio Municipal Adérito Sena is a multi-use stadium in Mindelo, Cape Verde. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of FC Derby as well as CS Mindelense, Académica, GD Amarantes and Batuque FC and the lesser club of Corinthians São Vicente. The stadium holds 5,000 people and area is 105x68 m and its ground is artificial grass. The stadium is owned by the municipality of São Vicente and is operated by the São Vicente Regional Football Association (ARFSV). It is a certified stadium by FIFA for international competition as well as friendly matches

FC Derby association football club

Futebol Clube Derby is a football club that had played in the Premier division and the São Vicente Island League in Cape Verde and is Cape Verde's only affiliate of FC Porto and the oldest affiliate in the whole of Africa. It is based in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. It is the second team of the regional league who won the most titles after independence especially in the 1960s and the 1970s. Its current president is Carlos Alberto Lopes and its coach is Yoya who became in May 2017. The club name is the Dragons or Dragões, the same as Porto's slogan. Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Batuque and Mindelense.

Associação Académica do Mindelo is a football club that had played in the Premier division and the São Vicente Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente and plays in a stadium with a capacity of 5,000. The club is an affiliate of the Portuguese club Académica de Coimbra. It is one of the first teams ever to win a provincial title before independence, in 1953, a year later. There was no further competition until 1956. Académica won their first title since independence in 1989. Other titles includes four for the island including their recent 2006/07 season win and two opening tournaments along with their recent win.

Its logo features an eagle carrying a globe and the letters GSC, the acronym of the club are written in a label in the middle.

Castilho also has a basketball, athletics and tennis departments. Also it has the first cricket department in Cape Verde.

Athletics are played at Estádio Municipal Adérito Sena, basketball is played at nearby Polidesportivo do Mindelo and tennis southwest of the main stadium.
